Our co-director Debbie Jarrell is taking today off to welcome her new great-granddaughter into this big, scary world. It's especially scary here in Appalachian communities near mountaintop removal, where the airborne ultra-fine blasting dust and water and soil contamination contribute to a whole host of deadly health problems. Our babies are more likely to be born with birth defects, our children more likely to have asthma, our adults more likely to have major depression, and everyone is more likely to have cancer and heart disease. Let's make Appalachia a little less scary for the new arrival.
What can you do? How about donating to Coal River Mountain Watch? We fight mountaintop removal from the literal trenches in our back yards, documenting violations and state agency complicity, to the courts, to the halls of the US Congress. You can feed a volunteer for a month for $150, or pay a month's office rent for $250. A recurring monthly donation of $20 can get one of our staff to Charleston to pester our state agencies, or $40 can get them there and back home. For $50, you can sponsor a participant at this weekend's Mountain Justice Fall Summit, which we're hosting for the 9th year. You can join over 100 new activists braving the chilly Appalachian weekend to see mountaintop removal firsthand and take action to end this abominable practice.
Thank you for all that you do to make Appalachia less scary for all of us, especially the kids.
