UITNODIGING voor een bijeenkomst met de Palestijnse journalist Mohammed Omer Maandag 2 juni van 20.00 – 22.00 uur Locatie: HTIB, 1e Weteringplantsoen 2 C te Amsterdam(Tram 16, 24, 25 vanaf CS tot halte Weteringcircuit, daarna 2 minuten lopen: rechtsaf Weteringschans richting Leidseplein, 1e straat links is 1e Weteringplantsoen) De Palestijnse journalist Mohamed Omer, bekend van zijn bezoek aan Nederland in 2007 (*), en van zijn reportages op www.rafahtoday.org zal op 16 juni in Londen, samen met de unembedded journalist Dahr Jamail, de Martha Gellhorn prijs voor de journalistiek in ontvangst nemen.Voorafgaand aan de prijsuitreiking heeft Mohammed Omer een speakers tour gepland door Europa: in Zweden, Nederland en Griekenland. Maandag 2 juni spreekt hij in Amsterdam. In Zweden is hij daarna (**) de hoofdspreker op een conferentie van "Reporters without Borders - Sweden". TWEE WEKEN NAAR PALESTINA Stichting VIA organiseert jaarlijks allerlei vrijwilligers projecten over de hele wereld. Sinds drie jaar is het ook mogelijk om deel te nemen aan projecten in Palestina. Dit zijn doorgaans korte projecten (twee weken), maar er zijn ook mogelijkheden voor lange termijn projecten. Naast Palestina zelf, zijn er ook projecten in Palestijnse vluchtelingen kampen (Syrië, Libanon), en bij een Arabische organisatie Baladna in Israel. In alle gevallen staat Palestina centraal. De inhoud van de projecten is meestal een combinatie van werk, discussie en excursies. Voor een compleet overzicht van onze projecten in het Midden-Oosten, zie het onderstaande document. Omdat het geen eenvoudige regio is, zijn er criteria voor deelname. Zo verwachten wij bijvoorbeeld een zekere mate van kennis over / interesse in / affiniteit met de regio en het conflict. Ook de criteria staan in het document vermeld. Ik hoop dat we ook dit jaar weer meer vrijwilligers naar Palestina uit kunnen zenden. Uit eigen ervaring weet ik hoeveel impact het heeft om de situatie ter plaatse aan den lijven te ondervinden - ook al heb je in Nederland al veel gelezen. Ook de mate waarop familie en vrienden van onze vrijwilligers geïnteresseerd raken (bijvoorbeeld door weblogs of e-mails), geeft mij altijd weer het gevoel dat het er echt toe doet om mensen naar Palestina uit te zenden. Daarbij is ook voor ons het solidariteitsprincipe een hoofdkwestie. The EU-Israel Association Agreement forms the basis on which Israel and EUcountries trade with each other.The Agreement gives Israel preferential trading terms, and its statedobjective is "to gradually integrate Israel into European policies andprogrammes". There is also a financial assistance element which makes Israeleligible for ¤14 million in European Community financial cooperation overthe next seven years. In view of Israel's appalling human rights record towards the Palestinianpeople and its own Arab citizens, and its continuous breach of InternationalLaw and UN Resulotions, it is an outrage that the European Union shouldallow this Agreement to continue. The Agreement itself states that it mustbe "based on respect for human rights and democratic principles which guidesinternal and international policy". Israel is clearly in breach of these terms. We therefore believe theAgreement must be suspended until Israel respects human rights andinternational law.
