Eva Hartogs en haar opdrachtgever Derk Sauer in De Wereld Draait Door over 'Poetin.'

Laat ik beginnen met een tamelijk willekeurig voorbeeld van het mainstream-niveau. In De Groene Amsterdammer van 24 maart 2022 staat op de voorpagina: ‘Was oorlog te vermijden? De decennialange aanloop van de Russische invasie in Oekraïne. Plus Eva Hartogs dagboek uit reen gespleten Rusland.’ Op de achtergrond een flat die door kogels en granaten is getroffen, een vrouw op een balkon hangt de was buiten. De boodschap is duidelijk: het ‘gespleten Rusland’ gaat flink tekeer. 

Wie is Eva Hartogs? Wikipedia: ‘In 2013 werd zij correspondent bij The Moscow Times, de Engelstalige krant die in de jaren negentig door de Nederlandse journalist Derk Sauer werd begonnen. In juli 2017 werd zij benoemd als de nieuwe hoofdredacteur. Op dat moment besloot de krant ook volledig over te stappen van papier naar digitaal. Omstreeks 2019 stopte Hartog als hoofdredacteur.’  SP-miljonair Derk Sauer is de journalist die in tien jaar tijd met steun van ondermeer oud KGB-ers en Rusische mafiosi naar schatting 150 miljoen wist bijeen te vergaren in het toen nog ineengestorte Rusland onder het corrupte Jeltsin-regime. Met de uitgave van glossy magazines voor de nieuwe rijken die elkaar naar het leven stonden, wist Sauer eveneens The Moscow Times de neoliberale spreekbuis in Moskou te maken. In dit milieu gedijde Hartogs als hoofdredactrice. Hoewel de Russische Federatie 11 tijdszones beslaat, wist zij nog geen maand na de inval al dat het hele land ‘gespleten’ was, een bewering die niet gestaafd werd door feiten. Dat is in dit soort gevallen niet zo vreemd, want De Groene is een ideologisch georiënteerd tijdschrift voor de ‘politiek-literaire elite’ in de polder, die stevig gegrondvest is in het kapitalistische denken.

NRC: '14-10-2004, Moskou: Derk Sauer, de kleine man met grootse daden is de bekendste Nederlander in Rusland en waarschijnlijk ook de rijkste. Sauer op de opening van een nieuw fliaal van de exclusieve juwelier Gilbert Albert.' 

Het manicheïsch simplisme van de Groene-redactie blijkt tevens uit het gekochte artikel van de joods-Russisch-Amerikaanse journalist Keith Gessen, de broer van de uitgesproken Poetin-haatster Masha Gessen, die ’In an extensive October 2008 profile of Vladimir Putin for Vanity Fair, reported that the young Putin had been “an aspiring thug” and that “the backward evolution of Russia began” within days of his inauguration in 2000.’ De inleiding van broer Gessen in De Groene luidt als volgt: ‘Om de tragedie van de oorlog van Rusland tegen Oekraïne te begrijpen, loont het de moeite verder terug te gaan dan de afgelopen paar weken en maanden, en zelfs verder dan Vladimir Poetin.’ Maar slechts één pagina verder concludeert hij al dat de ‘oorlog’ in Oekraïne ‘de beslissing’ was ‘van slechts één persoon: Vladimir Poetin,’ om vervolgens te beweren: ‘Het had niet zo hoeven aflopen, al is het veel moeilijker te bepalen waar het precies fout is gegaan.’ Het is de bekende mystificatie om ‘Poetin’ de schuld te kunnen geven, die als énige zou hebben besloten de oorlog te beginnen. Eén dader, honderduizenden slachtoffers. Ziehier het simplisme van de westerse mainstream-media en de westerse politici van links tot uiterst rechts. En niemand die beseft dat een dergelijk simplisme in een uiterst complexe werkelijkheid domweg een leugen is. Keith Gessen zelf onderstreept die houding nog eens door te schrijven:

Iedereen dacht dat Poetin louter bezig was met dwangdiplomatie. Iedereen dacht dat de Amerikaanse inlichtingendienst het bij het verkeerde eind had. Ik bezocht vrienden, luisterde naar hun bespiegelingen en verkende met hen de verschillende scenario’s. Zelfs als er een invasie zou plaatsvinden — een grote ‘als’ — dan zou die snel voorbij zijn, daar waren we het allemaal over eens. Het zou net als met de Krim zijn: een precisieoperatie met gebruik van overweldigende technologische superioriteit. 

Iedereen? Ja, ‘iedereen,’ uit de beperkte kring die de Russische Amerikaan Gessen kende. De oorlog ‘zou verschrikkelijk zijn, maar relatief pijnloos. Dat was fout. We hadden het allemaal mis,’ ook ‘geen van de mensen’ die hij een maand eerder nog in Moskou had gesproken bleek op de hoogte zijn. Zelfs degenen ‘met tamelijk goede connecties,’ dachten niet ‘dat er daadwerkelijk een invasie zou plaatsvinden.’ En toch krijgt deze onwetende Keith Gessen zeven pagina’s lang de ruimte in De Groene Amsterdammer om zijn oppervlakkige analyse uiteen te zetten, met als hoogtepunt zijn laatste conclusie dat ‘Op een dag de oorlog zal eindigen, en op een dag, verder in de toekomst, maar waarschijnlijk niet zo snel als men zou hopen, het regime in Rusland [zal] veranderen. Er zal dan een nieuwe gelegenheid zijn om Rusland weer in het concert der naties op te nemen.’ 

Het cliché Panta Rhei als grootse openbaring van een journalist die, volgens eigen zeggen, ‘het allemaal mis’ had. Het is de bekende propagandistische, uiterst oppervlakkige riedel van de westerse ‘vrije pers’ met haar contextloos gezever dat zij elke dag weer over haar publiek uitstort. ‘Iedereen dacht dat Poetin’ maar wat zeurde, althans, iedere ‘talking head’ die niet uit de massamedia is weg te meppen, iedere hansworst die weigert zijn plaats af te staan aan een deskundige die door ervaring van binnenuit beter weet. Onder hen bevinden zich gerenommeerde vakmensen als de wereldberoemde geopolitieke denker Henry Kissinger die al in 2015 publiekelijk verklaarde dat de politiek van de Obama/Biden-regering erop gericht was ‘Rusland uiteen te laten vallen,’  een voornemen dat terug te vinden is in Zbignieuw Brzezinki’s bestseller The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and it’s Geostrategic Imperatives uit 1997, waarin de geopolitieke autoriteit opmerkte dat Brzezinki, ik citeer nu het onafhankelijke Wikipedia: 

Regarding the landmass of Eurasia as the center of global power, sets out to formulate a Eurasian geostrategy for the United States. In particular, he (Brzezinski. svh) writes that no Eurasian challenger should emerge that can dominate Eurasia and thus also challenge U.S. global pre-eminence. 

Ook een kritische Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournalist als Mike Whitney wees op de website CounterPunch van 2 maart 2014 dat:

As you probably know by now, Obama and Co. have ousted Ukraine’s democratically-elected president, Viktor Yanukovych, with the help of ultra-right, paramilitary, neo-Nazi gangs who seized and burned government offices, killed riot police, and spread mayhem and terror across the country. These are America’s new allies in the Great Game, the grand plan to 'pivot to Asia' (van strategie veranderen. svh) by pushing further eastward, toppling peaceful governments, securing vital pipeline corridors, accessing scarce oil and natural gas reserves and dismantling the Russian Federation consistent with the strategy proposed by geopolitical mastermind, Zbigniew Brzezinski. Brzezinski’s magnum opus ‘The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and it’s Geostrategic Imperatives’ has become the Mein Kampf for aspiring western imperialists. It provides the basic blueprint for establishing U.S. military-political-economic hegemony in the century’s most promising and prosperous region, Asia. In an article in Foreign Affairs Brzezinski laid out his ideas about neutralizing Russia by splitting the country into smaller parts, thus, allowing the U.S. to maintain its dominant role in the region without threat of challenge or interference. Here’s an excerpt from the article:

‘Given (Russia’s) size and diversity, a decentralized political system and free-market economics would be most likely to unleash the creative potential of the Russian people and Russia’s vast natural resources. A loosely confederated Russia — composed of a European Russia, a Siberian Republic, and a Far Eastern Republic — would also find it easier to cultivate closer economic relations with its neighbors. Each of the confederated entitles would be able to tap its local creative potential, stifled for centuries by Moscow’s heavy bureaucratic hand. In turn, a decentralized Russia would be less susceptible to imperial mobilization.’ (Zbigniew Brzezinski, ‘A Geostrategy for Eurasia’)

Moscow is keenly aware of Washington’s divide and conquer strategy, but has downplayed the issue in order to avoid a confrontation. The U.S.-backed coup in Ukraine means that that option is no longer feasible. Russia will have to respond to a provocation that threatens both its security and vital interests. Early reports suggest that Putin has already mobilized troops to the East and, according to Reuters, ‘put fighter jets along its western borders on combat alert.’ Here’s more from Reuters:

‘The United States says any Russian military action would be a grave mistake. But Russia’s foreign ministry said in a statement that Moscow would defend the rights of its compatriots and react without compromise to any violation of those rights.’ (Reuters)

There’s going to be a confrontation, it’s just a matter of whether the fighting will escalate or not.

In order to topple Yanukovych, the U.S. had to tacitly support fanatical groups of neo-Nazi thugs and anti-Semites. And, even though ‘Interim Ukrainian President Oleksander Tuchynov has pledged to do everything in his power to protect the country’s Jewish community,’ reports on the ground are not so encouraging. Here’s an excerpt from a statement by Natalia Vitrenko, of The Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine that suggests the situation is much worse than what is being reported in the news:

‘Across the country… People are being beaten and stoned, while undesirable members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine are subject to mass intimidation and local officials see their families and children targeted by death threats if they do not support the installation of this new political power. The new Ukrainian authorities are massively burning the offices of political parties they do not like, and have publicly announced the threat of criminal prosecution and prohibition of political parties and public organizations that do not share the ideology and goals of the new regime.’ (‘USA and EU Are Erecting a Nazi Regime on Ukrainian Territory,’ Natalia Vitrenko)

Earlier in the week, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that a Ukranian synagogue had been firebombed although the ‘Molotov cocktails struck the synagogue’s exterior stone walls and caused little damage.’ […]

Then there’s this, from Dr. Inna Rogatchi in Arutz Sheva (Israëlisch medianetwerk. svh):

There is no secret concerning the real political agenda and programs of ultra-nationalist parties in Ukraine — there is nothing close to European values and goals there. One just should open existing documents and hear what the representatives of those parties proclaim daily. They are sharply anti-European, and highly racist. They have nothing to do with the values and practices of the civilized world…

Ukrainian Jewry is facing a real and serious threat… To empower the openly neo-Nazi movements in Europe by ignoring the threat they pose is an utterly risky business. People should not have to pay a terrible price — again — for the meekness and indifference of their leaders. As Ukraine today has become the tragic show-case for all of Europe with regards to breeding and allowing race-hatred to become a violent and uncontrollable force, it is imperative to handle the situation there in accordance with existing international law and norms of civilization.’ (‘Tea With Neo-Nazis: The Violent Nationalism in Ukraine,’ Arutz Sheva)

Here’s a little more background on the topic by progressive analyst Stephen Lendmen from a February 25 (2014. svh) post titled ‘New York Times: Supporting U.S. Imperial Lawlessness’:

‘Washington openly backs fascist Svoboda party leader Oleh Tyahnybok… In 2004, Tyahnybok was expelled from former President Viktor Yushchenko’s parliamentary faction. He was condemned for urging Ukrainians to fight against a ‘Muscovite-Jewish mafia.’

In 2005, he denounced ‘criminal activities’ of ‘organized Jewry.’ He outrageously claimed they plan ‘genocide’ against Ukrainians…

‘Tyahnybok extremism didn’t deter Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland (die ondermeer de neonazi’s financierde met 5 miljard dollar om de gewelddadige Maidan-chaos te creëeren. svh). On February 6, she met openly with him and other anti-government leaders.

In early January, 15,000 ultranationalists held a torchlight march through Kiev. They did so to honor Nazi-era collaborator/mass murderer Stepan Bandera. Some wore uniforms a Wehrmacht Ukrainian division used in WW II. Others chanted ‘Ukraine above all’ and ‘Bandera, come and bring order.’ (Steve Lendman blog)

Of course, the U.S. media has downplayed the fascistic-neo-Nazi ‘ethnic purity’ element of the Ukrainian coup in order to focus on— what they think — are more ‘positive themes,’ like the knocking down of statues of Lenin or banning Communist party members from participating in Parliament. As far as the media is concerned, these are all signs of progress.

Ukraine is gradually succumbing to the loving embrace of the New World Order where it will serve as another profit-generating cog in Wall Street’s wheel. That’s the theory, at least. It hasn’t occurred to the boneheads (idioten. svh) at the New York Times or Washington Post that Ukraine is rapidly descending into Mad Max-type anarchy which could spill over its borders into neighboring countries triggering violent conflagrations, social upheaval, regional instability or — god help us — WWIII. The MSM [Managed Security Monitoring] sees nothing but silver linings as if everything was going according to plan. All of Eurasia, the Middle East and beyond are being pacified and integrated into one world government overseen by the unitary executive who defers to no one but the corporations and financial institutions who control the levers of power behind imperial shoji-screen. What could go wrong?

Naturally, Russia is worried about developments in Ukraine, but is unsure how to react. Here’s how Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev summed it up the other day:

‘We do not understand what is going on there. A real threat to our interests (exists) and to the lives and health of our citizens. Strictly speaking, today there is no one there to communicate with… If you think that people in black masks waving Kalashnikovs (represent) a government, then it will be difficult for us to work with such a government.’

Clearly, Moscow is confused and worried. No one expects the world’s only superpower to behave this irrationally, to hop-scotch (hinkelen. svh) across the planet creating one failed state after another, fomenting revolt, breeding hatred, and spreading misery wherever it goes. At present, the Obama team is operating at full-throttle trying to topple regimes in Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine, and god-knows where else. At the same time, failed operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya have left all three countries in dire straights, ruled by regional warlords and armed militias. Medvedev has every right to be concerned.

Who wouldn’t be? The U.S. has gone off the rails, stark raving mad. The architecture for global security has collapsed while the basic principals of international law have been jettisoned (overboord gooien. svh). The rampaging U.S. juggernaut lurches from one violent confrontation to the next without rhyme or reason, destroying everything in its path, forcing millions to flee their own countries, and pushing the world closer to the abyss. Isn’t that reason enough to be concerned?

Now Obama has thrown-in with the Nazis. It’s just the icing on the cake.

‘Family values.’ Where have we heard that before?

It’s clear, that Obama and his brainiac advisors think they have a handle on this thing and can train this den of vipers to click their heels and follow Washington’s directives, but it sounds like a bad bet to me. These are hard-core, died-in-the-wool, Nazi-extremists. They won’t be bought-off, co-opted or intimidated. They have an agenda and they aim to pursue that agenda to their last, dying breath.

Of all the dumb plans Washington has come up with in the last couple years, this is the dumbest.

Bovenstaande is geschreven een jaar voordat Kissinger waarschuwde dat de Amerikaanse regering Obama/Biden erop uit was ‘Rusland uiteen te laten vallen,’ en negen jaar voordat de Amerikaanse broodschrijver Keith Gessen in De Groene Amsterdammer beweerde dat hij en zijn neoliberale contacten ‘het allemaal mis’ hadden, en de ‘oorlog de beslissing [was] van slechts één persoon: Vladimir Poetin.’ Maar waar het werkelijk omdraait is het voorkomen dat 'U.S. global pre-eminence' wordt bedreigd, zoals elke serieuze Amerikaanse expert beaamt. Er zijn namelijk veel meer prominente deskundigen die voor de uitgelokte oorlog in Oekraïne hebben gewaarschuwd zonder dat de mainstream-media hieraan aandacht schonken. Zelfs Kissinger’s waarschuwing werd verzwegen, evenals de talloze waarschuwingen van de Amerikaanse hoogleraar inzake Rusland, Stephen F. Cohen, die aan de prestigieuze universiteit van Princeton doceerde. In zijn essaybundel War With Russia? From Putin & Ukraine To Trump & Russiagate (2019) schreef hij anno 4 mei 2019:  

US-led NATO continues to increase its land, sea, and air build-up on or near Russia’s bonders. Not surprisingly, Moscow responds by sending its planes to inspect a US warschip sailing not far from Russians military-naval base at Kaliningrad (grenzend aan Litouwen en Polen. svh). Preposterously, having for two decades steadily moved NATO’s military presence from Berlin to Russia’s borders, and now escalating it, Washington and Brussels accuse Moscow of ‘provocations against NATO.’ But who is ‘provoking’ — ‘aggressing’ against — whom?  The NATO buildup can only stop in  Russians memories of the Nazi German invasion in 1941, the last time such hostile military forces mobilized on the country’s frontier. Some 27.5 million Soviet citizens died in the aftermath. 

Though not reported in the US media, an influential faction in Kremlin politics has long insisted, mostly but not always behind closed doors, that the US-led West is preparing an actual hot war against Russia, and that Putin has not prepared the country adequately at home or abroad. During the pas two weeks, this conflict over policy has erupted in public with three prominent members of the Russian elite charging, sometimes implicitly but also explicitly, that Putin has supported his ‘fifth column’ government headed by Prime Minister Dimitri Medvedev. Critics are not seeking to remove Putin; there is no alternative to him and his public approval ratings, exceeding 80 percent, are too high.  

But they do want the Medvedev government replaced and their own politics adopted. Those policies include a Soviet-style mobilization of the economy for war and more proactive military policies abroad, especially in Ukraine. In this context, we should ask whether US and NATO policy-makers are sleepwalking toward war with Russia or whether they actively seek it. 

Inmiddels, negen jaar later is de laatste vraag beantwoord door zowel de NAVO en Washington als door de niet democratisch gekozen Europese Commissie, die namens alle 27 EU-lidstaten zelfstandig kan beslissen wat de toekomst van Europa zal zijn. De voorzitster van de Europese Commissie, Ursula von der Leyen, verwoordde het in oktober 2022 als volgt: ‘De oorlog in Oekraïne is niet alleen een Europese Oorlog, maar een oorlog over de toekomst van de hele mensheid. Dus, de horizon van Europa kan alleen de gehele wereld omvatten.’ Bovendien, stelde zij: ‘Rusland’s mislukking (in Oekraïne. svh) alleen zal de op regels gebaseerde wereldwijde orde niet redden. Want het revisionisme van het Kremlin is niet de enige en grootste bedreiging van de op regels gebaseerde orde. De zogeheten onbeperkte samenwerking die door Vladimir Poetin en Xi Jinping is afgekondigd is eveneens een duidelijke bedreiging van de naoorlogse orde… wij moeten deze wereldwijde uitdaging een halt toeroepen, wij moeten het vertrouwen in onze wereldwijde doelen herstellen.’ Von der Leyen sprak verheugd over, ik citeer weer, ‘onze trilaterale energie overeenkomst in juni met Egypte en Israel. Het heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in onze strategie om van de Russische fossiele brandstof af te komen. Maar mijn bezoeken aan Cairo en Jeruzalem gingen om veel meer dan gas,' en merkte voorts op: 

Nooit eerder heb ik zo’n intensieve samenwerking meegemaakt met het Witte Huis als dit jaar. Ik was in november (2021) in Washington toen er spanningen ontstonden aan onze oostelijke grens met Wit Rusland. Dus hebben wij samen met Washington dit jaar de sancties voorbereid, en toen Oekraïne werd binnengevallen stonden wij al klaar om te reageren. Wij coördineerden onze sancties, ronde na ronde. Wij hebben aan beide zijden onze energie-coördinatie en energie-voorraden gemaximaliseerd. Het hielp enorm dat ik een overeenkomst had met president Biden over de LNG en zij verhoogden hun LNG toevoer naar de EU. En dit maakte het voor ons mogelijk om af te komen van de Russische fossiele brandstof. En nu is het transatlantisch verbond op een cruciaal moment voor Europa sterker dan ooit. Gelijkgestemde partners als de VS en Noorwegen hebben hun toevoer massaal verhoogd en hielpen ons om ons te bevrijden van onze buitengewoon gevaarlijke afhankelijkheid. 

Terecht stelde Von der Leyden namens de Europese Unie dat hier sprake is van een ‘gigantische tectonische verschuiving,’ een tautologie die aangeeft welk belang de corrupte EU hecht aan de gewelddadige Amerikaanse hegemonie over de gehele wereld, met Azië voorop.  

En wat de VS betreft: begin november 2022 werd bekend dat ‘The war in Ukraine is a prelude to greater military challenges to the US in the near future,’ en dat de ‘US Strategic Command head Admiral Charles Richard warned in a speech at the Naval Submarine League's 2022 Annual Symposium & Industry Update’ dat:

‘This Ukraine crisis that we're in right now, this is just the warmup,’ said Richard. ‘The big one is coming. And it isn't going to be very long before we're going to get tested in ways that we haven't been tested in a long time.’

Nu kan De Groene Amsterdammer, als spreekbuis van het Nederlands establishment, nadat de Derde Wereldoorlog is begonnen natuurlijk beweren ‘fout’ te zijn geweest, dat de redactie ‘het allemaal mis’ had, en vooral ook dat vanzelfsprekend de gruwelijke massavernietiging ‘de beslissing was van slechts één persoon: Vladimir Poetin,’ maar dat blijft natuurlijk lachwekkende propaganda, die alleen maar demonstreert hoe bewust ongeïnformeerd en lui deze kleinburgerlijk denkende kliek is. Ook De Groene heeft kennelijk nooit gehoord van William J. Perry, de Amerikaanse voormalige minister van Defensie onder Bill Clinton, die in zijn boek My Journey at the Nuclear Brink (2015) waarschuwt:

For the world to make real progress in reducing nuclear dangers, the United States must lead; and the IS will not lead unless Americans understand the importance of doing so — that today nuclear weapons no longer provide for our security, as they did in the Cold War, but are endangering our security. It mus be clear to the public and leaders that prevention of nuclear conflict serves an overriding common good and outweighs parochial concerns and politics as usual. 

Precies hetzelfde gaat op voor het chemische en biologische wapenarsenaal van de grootmachten. Maar ondanks het feit dat ‘President Barack Obama rode into office in 2009 with promises to work toward a nuclear-free world. His vow helped win him the Nobel Peace Prize that year. The next year, while warning that Washington would retain the ability to retaliate against a nuclear strike, he promised that America would develop no new types of atomic weapons’ kwam het persbureau Reuters tot de slotsom dat ‘By the time Obama left office in January 2017, the risk of Armageddon hadn’t receded. Instead, Washington was well along in a modernization program that is making nearly all of its nuclear weapons more accurate and deadly,’ een initiatief dat meer dan een miljoen keer een miljoen dollar gaat kosten. De VS leidt alleen de hernieuwde wapenwedloop in de wereld, en dit met de openlijke steun van de Europese Unie en met de stilzwijgende steun van de Europese volksvertegenwoordigers die in geval van oorlog over schuilkelders kunnen beschikken.

Veelzeggend is tevens dat de drie dagen durende bijeenkomst van het World Economic Forum in januari 2023 opnieuw perfect aantoonde dat er geen wezenlijk verschil bestaat tussen de westerse militaire, economische en politieke beleidsbepalers, allen pleitbezorgers van de deep state. De samensmelting van de staat en het kapitaal is onvermijdelijk geweest, zoals eveneens de alom gerespecteerde Italiaanse hoogleraar sociologie Giovanni Arrighi wetenschappelijk heeft aangetoond. Wijlen Arrighi doceerde aan de Johns Hopkins Universiteit en wordt algemeen nog steeds beschouwd als de belangrijkste geleerde op zijn vakgebied, naar wie The Arrighi Center for Global Studies is genoemd.

In zijn magistrale, uitgebreid gedocumenteerde, boek The Long Twentieth Century. Money, Power and the Origins of our Times (2010) zet Arrighi uiteen dat de vraag niet is:

when and how a world market economy rose above the primordial structures of everyday life; it is when and how capitalism rose above the structures of everyday life; it is when and how capitalism rose above the structures of the pre-existing world market economy and, over time, acquired its power to reshape the markets and lives of the entire world. As Braudel (toonaangevende France historicus die van 1946 tot 1972 directeur was van de gerenommeerde École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales te Parijs. svh) points out, the metamorphosis of Europe into the ‘monstrous shaper of world history’ that it became after 1500 was not a simple transition. Rather, it was ‘a series of stages and transitions, the earliest dating from well before what is usually known as “the” Renaissance of the late fifteenth century.’ 

The most decisive moment of this series of transitions was not the proliferation of elements of capitalist enterprise across Europe. Elements of this kind had occurred throughout the Eurasian trading system and were by no means peculiar to the West: 

‘Everywhere, from Egypt to Japan, we shall find genuine capitalists, wholesalers, the rentiers of trade, and their thousands of auxiliaries (bondgenoten. svh) — the commission agents, brokers, money-changers, and bankers. As for the techniques, possibilities or guarantees of exchange, any of these groups of merchants would stand in comparison with its western equivalents. Both inside and outside India, Tamil, Bengali, and Gujarati merchants formed partnerships with business and contracts passing in turn from one group to another, just as they would in Europe from the Florentines to the Lucchese (uit het Toscaanse Lucca. svh), the Genoese, the South Germans or the English. There were even, in medieval merchant kings in Cairo, Aden and the Persian Gulf ports.

Nowhere, except in Europe, did these elements of capitalism coalesce (samensmelten. svh) into the powerful mix that propelled European states towards the territorial conquest of the world and the formation of an all-powerful and truly vitalist world-economy. From this perspective, the really important transition that needs to be elucidated is not that from feudalism to capitalism but from scattered to concentrated capitalist power. And the most important aspect of this much  neglected transition is the unique fusion of state and capital, which was realized nowhere more favorably for capitalism than in Europe: 

‘Capitalism only triumphs when it becomes identified with the state, when it is the state. In its first great phase, that of the Italian city-states of Venice, Genoa, and Florence, power lay in the hands of the moneyed elite. In seventeenth-century Holland the aristocracy of the Regents governed for the benefit and even according to the directives of businessmen, merchants, and moneylenders. Likewise, in England the Glorious Revolution of 1688 marked the accession of business similar to that in Holland. (Braudel 1977).’

Dat het kapitalisme de staat is, en de staat in allereertste instantie het kapitalisme vertegenwoordigt bleek wederom op 18 januari 2023 toen de NAVO onder de kop ‘NATO Secretary General calls for more support to Ukraine at World Economic Forum’ bekend maakte dat:

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg participated in the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday (18 January 2023), where he called for more support to Ukraine.

In the plenary session on ‘Restoring Security and Peace,’ the Secretary-General stressed that NATO Allies have provided unprecedented support to help Ukraine uphold its right of self-defence, and called for deliveries of military equipment to be stepped up at this critical time. ‘Weapons are the way to peace,’ he said, ‘what happens around the negotiating table is totally dependent on the strength on the battlefield. And if we want Ukraine to prevail, then they need the military strength.’

The Secretary-General described the war in Ukraine as a ‘fight for democracy,’ stating that ‘it is extremely important that President Putin doesn’t win this war — it will be a tragedy for Ukrainians, but also very dangerous for all of us. Because then the message to authoritarian leaders, not only to Putin, but also to other authoritarian leaders is that when they use brutal force, when they violate international law, they achieve what they want. And that will be a very bad and dangerous lesson. It will make the world more dangerous and us more vulnerable.’

Other participants in the panel were President Andrzej Duda of Poland, First Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko of Ukraine, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland of Canada, and U.S. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines. The discussion was moderated by CNN’s Fareed Zakaria.

While in Davos, Mr Stoltenberg had a bilateral meeting with President Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania, and also met with Swiss Federal Councillor Viola Amherd, Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sports; with the First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, and other senior officials.

Een duidelijker voorbeeld dat ‘capitalism is the state’ is nauwelijks denkbaar. Met als moderator een bekende CNN-journalist en pleitbezorger van de Amerikaanse hegemonie, sprak onder andere de secretaris-generaal van de NAVO de gedenkwaardige woorden dat ‘Weapons are the way to peace,’ oftewel het Orwelliaanse ‘Oorlog is Vrede,’ en voorspelde de Canadese vice-premier, de rechtse ‘Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland,’ dat ‘we can help Ukraine win, clearly, definitively. And if we do that, if that happens this year, you know it as well as I do Fareed, that would be a huge boost to the global economy.’ Waarom, vertelde zij er niet bij, maar wel was Freeland ‘extremely confident that Ukraine will defeat Russia, which would result in giving a jolt to the economy.’  Veelzeggend is dat toen ‘Canada announced it was offering $7.8 million in military assistance to Ukraine on Feb. 14 (2022. svh), alongside a $500 million loan, there were few safeguards to ensure it wouldn’t fall into the hands of the country’s Azov Battalion, whose founder, Andriy Biletsky, said in 2010 that Ukraine must “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade… against Semite-led Untermenschen [subhumans].” Reporting from the Ottawa Citizen revealed that Canadian military officials met with Azov leaders in June 2018, and rather than distance themselves from the unit, merely expressed concern that it could get leaked to the media.’

Bekend is tevens dat de fel anti-Russische ‘Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland knew for more than two decades that her maternal Ukrainian grandfather was the chief editor of a Nazi newspaper in occupied Poland that vilified Jews during the Second World War,’ en dat ‘Ms. Freeland, who has paid tribute to her maternal grandparents in articles and books, helped edit a scholarly article in the Journal of Ukrainian Studies in 1996 that revealed her grandfather, Michael Chomiak, was a Nazi propagandist for Krakivski Visti (Krakow News). Krakivski Visti was set up in 1940 by the German army and supervised by German intelligence officer Emil Gassert. Its printing presses and offices were confiscated by the Germans from a Jewish publisher, who was later murdered at the Belzec concentration camp.’ Vice-premier Freeland waarschuwt nu ‘Canadians to beware of Russian disinformation,’ vanzelfsprekend in een poging de aandacht af te leiden van het feit dat er nauwe contacten bestaan tussen de NAVO en Oekraïense neo-nazi’s met uitgesproken anti-semitische en anti-Russische sentimenten.

Ook de ‘First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska,’ sprak tijdens de WEF-bijeenkomst. Zij is een oligarch die, om de belasting te ontwijken, haar miljoenen en die van haar echtgenoot Zelensky uit Oekraïne liet smokkelen om in het Westen lucratief te beleggen, zoals de ‘Pandora Papers Reveal Offshore Holdings of Ukrainian President and his Inner Circle,’ en dat terwijl ‘Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rode to power on pledges to clean up the Eastern European country, but the Pandora Papers reveal he and his close circle were the beneficiaries of a network of offshore companies, including some that owned expensive London property.

Key Findings

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his partners in comedy production owned a network of offshore companies related to their business based in the British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, and Belize.

Zelensky’s current chief aide, Serhiy Shefir, as well as the head of the country’s Security Service, were part of the offshore network.

Offshore companies were used by Shefir and another business partner to buy pricey London real estate.

Around the time of his 2019 election, Zelensky handed his shares in a key offshore company over to Shefir, but the two appear to have made an arrangement for Zelensky’s family to continue receiving money from the offshore.

Tenslotte Yuliia Svyrydenko ‘Ukraine's deputy PM confident “we will win this year.” Yuliia Svyrydenko spoke to the BBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Yuliia Svyrydenko was asked if she had a message for ordinary British families suffering the cost-of-living crisis partly onset by Russia's invasion.

Ms Svyrydenko, who is also the minister for the economy, called on countries to continue supplying weapons to Ukraine… ‘The fact that the UK is willing to participate in the recovery, to participate in weapons supply, means that they totally believe in Ukraine,’ she said, thanking Britain.

The deputy prime minister, who is participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, also discussed the reconstruction of Ukraine — which she said should, in part, be funded by money seized from Russian oligarchs as part of Western sanctions…

In September, the World Bank estimated the cost of Ukraine's reconstruction to be at $350bn, but Ms Svyrydenko said she believed that figure could now be $1 trillion, because of continued missile strikes on the country's energy grid.

Kortom, in plaats van naar een wapenstilstand of naar een vredesovereenkomst te streven, blijft Oekraïne bedelen om wapens en geld voor de wederopbouw, waardoor een Derde Wereldoorlog niet uit te sluiten valt. Intussen beantwoordde premier Rutte op de vraag van CNN of ‘er een limiet’ bestaat ‘aan hoeveel Nederland’ kan bijdragen aan de uitgelokte Oekraïne-oorlog: ‘Nee, we blijven helpen,’ ondanks het feit dat de armoede in Nederland blijft stijgen, en zonder dat de ingeslapen volksvertegenwoordiging zijn  goedkeuring heeft gegeven. Zo werkt de Nederlandse ‘democratie.’ Inderdaad, ‘capitalism is the state.’ 

Omdat het Oekraïnse leger zich verschuilt in openbare gebouwen wordt veel verwoest. Verwacht wordt dat de EU dit gaat betalen, terwijl Brussel de oorlog draaiende houdt, zonder dat hierover een democratische discussie bestaat.
