Later in the article she let US officials deny that the invasion was all about oil. NRC-editor Sjoerd de Jong (2003) denounced the ‘pseudo worldly wisdom’ that the war was about oil as a ‘vulgar-Marxist explanation,' which to many people might be ‘soothing’ but in fact is lame. One wonders how De Jong would evaluate the blunt assessment by well-known Marxist Alan Greenspan. The former head of the US Federal Reserve stated in his memoirs (2007) that
‘Whatever their publicized angst over Saddam Hussein’s ‘weapons of mass destruction,’ American and British authorities were also concerned about violence in the area that harbors a resource indispensable for the functioning of the world economy. I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil. (Robinson et al., 2010: 38)’
Sjoerd de Jong is nu de NRC Ombudsman.
