Extraordinary statement on Taiwan by Bob Carr, former Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs:
"If the worst thing that faces the people of Taiwan would be what prevails in Hong Kong today, then we haven't got a cause for war.
I'd like to see the National Security Law no longer apply in Hong Kong, but Hong Kong still has substantially its own system and if that were the outcome that applied in Taiwan, then I can live with that."
You've got to admire Australians for their unparalleled no-nonsense bluntness. And this is really the key question. Anyone who'd been to HK before the NSL and who goes back today would notice virtually no difference. Is preventing the same thing in Taiwan worth a kind of war that most key thinkers, such as Kissinger, say could "destroy civilization"?
