'Sending portable toilets to Haiti would have been a better option, but this does not provide good photo opportunities. Israeli missions to disaster areas in the past have shown that such activity was in vain.'

Belder: Verwijt over weigeringcoöperatie fout

US Military To Enforce State Of
Emergency In Haiti

By Tom Eley

19 January, 2010
WSWS.org

The Haitian government declared a state of emergency on Monday, six days after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake laid waste to much of the nation and its capital, Port-au-Prince, killing at least 200,000, according to the latest estimate.

The state of emergency creates martial law conditions that will be enforced by the US military. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had demanded the imposition of the emergency decree during her visit to Haiti on Saturday. “The decree would give the government an enormous amount of authority, which in practice they would delegate to us,” Clinton declared.

Hulpvlucht opnieuw geen toestemming om te landen
20-01-2010

CNN

Published: January 18, 2010
MIAMI — America has a message for the millions of Haitians left homeless and destitute by last week’s earthquake: Do not try to come to the United States.

Every day, a United States Air Force cargo plane specially equipped with radio transmitters flies for five hours over the devastated country, broadcasting news and a recorded message from Raymond Joseph, Haiti’s ambassador in Washington.

“Listen, don’t rush on boats to leave the country,” Mr. Joseph says in Creole, according to a transcript released by the Pentagon. “If you do that, we’ll all have even worse problems. Because, I’ll be honest with you: If you think you will reach the U.S. and all the doors will be wide open to you, that’s not at all the case. And they will intercept you right on the water and send you back home where you came from.

Liberia is the colony most often cited in American History textbooks, but what many don’t realize is a colony for freed slaves was proposed along the coast of Haiti….and by President Lincoln.

It was a scheme that the Lincoln approved of, but then had to back-track and totally repudiate.

Passenger planes leaving Haiti with empty seats

American, Spirit and other carriers are flying planes in with supplies, then out with empty seats. Washington won't let the public buy tickets to leave Haiti because passengers can't be screened. Carriers hope that will change soon.

Spirit Airlines on Monday evacuated a few dozen college students caught in Haiti during the quake, a Spirit spokeswoman said. The flight from Port-au-Prince to Fort Lauderdale was arranged by the U.S. State Department and represented a rarity in Haiti's post-quake aviation operations.

Though Spirit, American and other major airlines have used passenger planes to fly cargo into Port-au-Prince since the quake, the planes almost always return to the States with hundreds of empty seats, airline spokesmen said.

After the quake, U.S. authorities banned commercial air travel from the Port-au-Prince airport, citing the airport's inability to clear passengers for flights. That screening includes putting passengers through metal detectors and checking them against federal terrorist-watch lists
