In de 'online geschiedenismagazine' Historiek van 10 september 2011 voorspelde Karel Beckman, hoofdredacteur van De Andere Krant, 'De revolutie komt van rechts,' verwijzend naar 'De libertarische factor in de Amerikaanse politiek,' en de door hem bewonderde Ron Paul, tot 2013 zestien aaneengesloten jaren lid van het Amerikaanse Huis van Afgevaardigden. Beckman schrijft over hem:

In the spring of 1977, having just served on a subcommittee Angola of the National Security Council as chief of the CIA’s Angola Task Force, I left the CIA. I was determined to testify to the congressional oversight committees about the laws we had broken in Angola, and I did. I also wrote a book on the subject, ‘In Search of Enemies (New York, Norton 1978),’ whose title outlined a useful thesis that would be echoed in other books and such conservative publications as Time Magazine. Soon I launched myself on a long and persistent reading-and-traveling self-education program about the Cold War in which I had been a soldier. In time, I met intellectual leaders and critics of the nuclear arms race like Carl Sagan, Admiral Gene LaRocque of the Center for Defense Information, and Helen Caldicott of Physicians for Social Responsibility. I devoured book after book on the subject and I began to offer in my lectures an explanation of how the CIA’s covert activities, its ‘secret wars,’ related to the arms race. In August 1996, the San Jose Mercury News initiated an extended series of articles linking the CIA’s ‘contra’ army to the crack cocaine epidemic in Los Angeles. Based on a year-long investigation, reporter Gary Webb wrote that during the 1980s the CIA helped finance its covert war against Nicaragua’s leftist government through sales of cut-rate cocaine to South Central L.A. drug dealer, Ricky Ross. The series unleashed a storm of protest, spearheaded by black radio stations and the congressional Black Caucus, with demands for official inquiries. The Mercury News‘ Web page, with supporting documents and updates, received hundreds of thousands of ‘hits’ a day.
While much of the CIA-contra-drug story had been revealed years ago in the press and in congressional hearings, the Mercury News series added a crucial missing link: It followed the cocaine trail to Ross and black L.A. gangs who became street-level distributors of crack, a cheap and powerful form of cocaine. The CIA’s drug network, wrote Webb, ‘opened the first pipeline between Colombia’s cocaine cartels and the black neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a city now known as the “crack” capital of the world.’ Black gangs used their profits to buy automatic weapons, sometimes from one of the CIA-linked drug dealers…
In interviews after leaving The Mercury News, Webb described the 1997 controversy as media manipulation. ‘The government side of the story is coming through the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post,’ he stated. ‘They use the giant corporate press rather than saying anything directly. If you work through friendly reporters on major newspapers, it comes off as The New York Times saying it and not a mouthpiece of the CIA.’ Webb's longest response to the controversy was in ‘The Mighty Wurlitzer Plays On,’ a chapter he contributed to an anthology of press criticism:
‘If we had met five years ago, you wouldn't have found a more staunch defender of the newspaper industry than me... And then I wrote some stories that made me realize how sadly misplaced my bliss had been. The reason I'd enjoyed such smooth sailing for so long hadn't been, as I'd assumed, because I was careful and diligent and good at my job... The truth was that, in all those years, I hadn't written anything important enough to suppress.
After leaving The Mercury News, Webb worked as an investigator for the California State Legislature. His assignments included investigating racial profiling by the California Highway Patrol and charges that the Oracle Corporation had received a no-bid contract award of $95 million in 2001. While working at the legislature, Webb continued to do freelance investigative reporting, sometimes based on his investigative work. For instance, he published an article on racial profiling in traffic stops in Esquire magazine, in April 1999.
In August 2004, Webb joined the Sacramento News & Review, an alternative weekly newspaper, where he continued doing investigative writing. One of his last articles examined America's Army, a video game designed by the U.S. Army.
Death
Webb was found dead in his Carmichael home on December 10, 2004, with two gunshot wounds to the head. His death was ruled a suicide by the Sacramento County coroner's office. According to a description of Webb's injuries in the Los Angeles Times, he shot himself with a .38 revolver, which he placed near his right ear. The first shot went through his face, and exited at his left cheek. The coroner's staff concluded that the second shot hit an artery.
After a local newspaper reported that Webb had died from multiple gunshots, the coroner's office received so many calls asking about Webb's death that Sacramento County Coroner Robert Lyons issued a statement confirming Webb had died by suicide. When asked by local reporters about the possibility of two gunshots being a suicide, Lyons replied: ‘It's unusual in a suicide case to have two shots, but it has been done in the past, and it is in fact a distinct possibility.’ News coverage noted that there were widespread rumors on the Internet at the time that Webb had been killed as retribution for his ‘Dark Alliance’ series, published eight years before.

Met of zonder staat zullen degenen die naar macht hunkeren, uiteindelijk hun macht aan anderen opleggen, of het nu een particuliere huurmoordenaar is of een CIA-gangster. Ook al zou men de staat opheffen dan nog zullen de meest meedogenlozen hun macht doen gelden om hun driften te kunnen bevredigen. Then in 1989, the Cold War came to an abrupt halt as the Soviet Union admitted its bankruptcy, the Soviet Bloc was set free, and the Berlin Wall was dismantled. In a worldwide atmosphere of celebration, I found myself accused of compulsive cynicism when I expressed skepticism that the dawn of an era of freedom had come. I, and of course thousands of others, set about watching and analyzing the post-Cold War world. Would the giant military complexes be dismantled? Would the tightening fist of national security laws and restrictions be relaxed? Would powerful political and economic elites willingly release their accumulated power? Or would new rationales be found for profitable old policies?
It seemed apparent that the United States and the Soviet Union had both lost the Cold War. Because of over-commitment to the production of arms ands the maintenance of vast military forces, each emerged with, permanently damaged economies, neither in control of their economic futures. Instead., the winners of the Cold War were, ironically enough, Japan and Germany, the vanquished losers of World War II, countries that had been prohibited from major investments in the production of arms and hence were forced to turn to trade goods instead.
Both the United States and the Soviet Union, however, remain military superpowers, locked in a symbiotic union of muscle and money with the world’s transnational bankers. They are, especially the United States, the ‘Praetorian Guard’ of the new world order.

Wanneer Karel Beckman en Frank Karsten hun boek Beyond Democracy (2012) eindigen met onder andere: ‘Democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%,’ en deze bewering toeschrijven aan Thomas Jefferson, ‘third president of the United States,’ terwijl zij dit ‘citaat’ verzonnen is, dan blijft hun 'informatie' verdacht.
En zo zijn er meerdere voorbeelden te geven van Beckman's onjuiste beweringen. Desondanks stelt De Andere Krant dat ‘onze kernwaarden integriteit,’ en ‘kwaliteit’ zijn, en als ambitie heeft ‘Goed en Wijs te zijn.’ Ik vrees dat eerder genoemde Hanno Wisse gelijk heeft wanneer hij stelt ‘aannemelijk’ te hebben ‘gemaakt dat de Andere Krant het paard van Troje met hem heeft binnengehaald. Ik vraag me oprecht af of dit projectiel ongeleid is, omdat zijn opvattingen het World Economic Forum zo goed uitkomen.’ Daarom is de vraag opportuun: op grond waarvan is Beckman door De Andere Krant tot hoofdredacteur is benoemd? Ik vermoed vanwege zijn wantrouwen tegen de staat. Hij stelt immers:
De moderne libertarische beweging ontstond in Amerika in de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw. In 1971 werd de Libertarian Party (LP) opgericht. (Ron Paul was in 1988 overigens al een keer presidentskandidaat voor de LP). De term ‘Libertarian’ werd indertijd min of meer noodgedwongen aangenomen door de oprichters omdat het begrip ‘liberalism’ in Amerika een heel andere inhoud had gekregen (een ‘liberal’ is in de VS zoiets als een sociaal-democraat). De term zelf stamt echter al uit de achttiende eeuw en werd in de negentiende eeuw ook wel gebruikt door Franse anarchistische communisten. Van Dale omschrijft ‘libertair’ dan ook als ‘gericht op volkomen maatschappelijke vrijheid, anarchistisch.’
Dit is correct, want naast het klassieke liberalisme (à la Adam Smith) en de al veel oudere natuurrechten-traditie is het anarchistische denken een van de belangrijkste pijlers onder het libertarische gedachtegoed. Libertariërs zijn echter wat zij zelf noemen individualistische (dus geen communistische) anarchisten. Het selectief gebruik maken van uitspraken van Verlichtingstheoretici is één van de demagogische trucs van Beckman. Het verzwijgen van de bredere context van Adam Smith’s zienswijze is een andere kunstgreep. Smith besefte dat het botte egoïsme een omvangrijk maatschappelijk probleem vormde, zoals blijkt uit zijn waarschuwing dat ‘Alles voor onszelf, en niets voor andere mensen, lijkt in elk tijdperk van de wereld de verachtelijke gedragslijn te zijn van de heersers over de mensheid.’ De vraag is dus: wat anders zou deze onverzadigbare sujetten tot de orde moeten roepen dan de gemeenschap van burgers? Waarom verzwijgt de neoliberaal Karel Beckman dit, terwijl toch bekend is dat ‘één van de belangrijkste pijlers onder het libertarische gedachtegoed,’ de hierboven geciteerde ‘Adam Smith’ is? Noam Chomsky maakt lezers erop attent dat Smith:
pointed out that it is totally senseless to talk about a nation and what we would nowadays call ‘national interests.’ He simply observed in passing, because it’s so obvious, that in England, which is what he’s discussing — and it was the most democratic society of the day — the principal architects of policy are the ‘merchants and manufacturers,’ and they make certain that their own interests are, in his words, ‘most peculiarly attended to,’ no matter what the effect on others, including the people of England who, he argued, suffered from their policies. He didn’t have the data to prove it at the time, but he was probably right… It was a conscious design which worked as Adam Smith said: the principal architects of policy consolidate state power and use it for their interests. It was certainly not popular will, zoals Beckman stelt met zijn kritiek op het socialisme en zijn verdediging van het neoliberalisme. Chomsky:
It’s basically court decisions and lawyers’ decisions, which created a form of private tyranny which is now more massive in many ways than even state tyranny was. These are major parts of modern twentieth century history. The classical liberals would be horrified. They didn’t even imagine this. But the smaller things that they saw, they were already horrified about.
There are huge efforts that do go into making people, to borrow Adam Smith’s phrase, ‘as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human being to be.’ A lot of the educational system is designed for that, if you think about it, it’s designed for obedience and passivity. From childhood, a lot of it is designed to prevent people from being independent and creative. If you’re independent-minded in school, you’re probably going to get into trouble very early on. That’s not the trait that’s being preferred or cultivated. When people live through all this stuff, plus corporate propaganda, plus television, plus the press and the whole mass, the deluge of ideological distortion that goes on, they ask questions that from another point of view are completely reasonable.
