De terroristen van IS gedijen op de chaos en als ze tot daden overgaan, zorgen ze voor een nog grotere chaos. Op deze manier scheppen ze het perpetuum mobile van de terreur en de resultaten die ze daarmee bereiken zullen ze als een aanmoediging beschouwen. Zo hebben ze in ieder geval hun volgende stadium bereikt: de export van terreur.
Misschien is het begonnen in 1985 toen Palestijnen de Achille Lauro kaapten en de joodse passagier Leon Klinghoffer in zijn rolstoel overboord zetten. Op 11 september 2001 vond de grote aanslag plaats en daarop volgde de oorlog in Afghanistan en uiteindelijk de executie van Osama bin Laden.

Onder de kop 'Het perpetuum mobile van de terreur' werd Hoflands betoog ingeleid met de mededeling dat 'Binnenkort we weer getuige [zijn] van en misschien deelnemer aan een beslissende krachtmeting in het Midden-Oosten.' De gedachte dat massaal geweld het verzet tegen de westerse terreur in het Midden-Oosten kan breken, getuigt van een hardnekkige misvatting die grenst aan het absurde. Kenmerkend is zijn bewering dat 'de export van terreur' tegen het Westen '[m]isschien is begonnen in 1985 toen Palestijnen de Achille Lauro kaapten en de joodse passagier Leon Klinghoffer in zijn rolstoel overboord zetten.' Dat deze terreurdaad het resultaat was van de decennialange zionistische terreur, waarbij driekwart van de Palestijnse bevolking uit Israel en bezet Palestijns gebied was verdreven, verzwijgt Hofland, omdat in zijn ogen de 'terreur' van de 'Joodse staat' geen 'terreur' is. De wrange ironie is dat 'terroristen' hun 'terreur' nooit als 'terreur' beschouwen, en in dit opzicht is de mentaliteit van Hofland precies dezelfde als die van ISIS. De vraag is dan ook waarom de 'politiek-literaire elite' in de polder de nestor van de polderpers onweersproken laat raaskallen. Waarom negeert zij de volgende feiten:
Beginning in the late 1980s, professors such as Pappe, Benny Morris and Avi Shlaim examined newly-released Israeli archives and came to the conclusion that decades of Israeli history on the 1948 war was mostly propaganda, and that the Palestinian narrative was essentially correct.
The Palestinians did not 'leave their homes' because of the orders of Arab governments as the standard Israeli line had had it. They were in fact driven out at gunpoint by Zionist militia groups such as Haganah, Irgun and Lehi (aka Stern Gang). Many of the 800,000 Palestinian refugees fled from fear of the many massacres the Zionists carried out, possibly the most notorious being at the village of Deir Yassin.
Thus these new historians documented the reality of the Palestinian Nakbah (Catastrophe) from Israel’s own internal sources. The basic facts no longer being under any serious dispute, Benny Morris eventually took another approach. In a now-infamous 2004 interview with Israeli broadsheet Ha’aretz, Morris clarified his commitment to Zionism, stating that yes, Israel had carried out ethnic cleansing, massacres (and even rapes) but that there are 'circumstances in history that justify ethnic cleansing… A Jewish state would not have come into being without the uprooting of 700,000 Palestinians. Therefore it was necessary to uproot them.'
In 2004 verklaarde de gezaghebbende Joods-Israelische historicus Benny Morris: 'Ben-Gurion was right... Without the uprooting of the Palestinians a Jewish state would not have arisen here.'
De etnische zuivering is uitgebreid beschreven in gedegen historisch onderzoek van Joods-Israelische historici als Simha Flapan, Ilan Pappe, Tom Segev, Avi Shlaim en Benny Morris, etc. De oorzaak van het conflict, te weten de etnische zuivering, begon in 1947, een feit dat volgens Benny Morris:
is based on many documents... most of them from the Israel Defense Forces Archives. What the new material shows is that there were far more Israeli acts of massacre than I had previously thought. Voor degenen die de boeken van Morris niet gelezen hebben, het begrip 'transfer' is een eufemisme voor etnische zuivering. Met andere woorden: Israel heeft volgens zijn meest vooraanstaande historicus en de eerder genoemde 'nieuwe historici' met geweld en 'terreur' tenminste 750.000 Palestijnse burgers verdreven, waardoor ze, zonder enige compensatie van Israel, in vluchtelingenkampen terechtkwamen, omdat ze in strijd met het internationaal recht en talloze resoluties van de VN van Israel niet mochten terugkeren. Het was kennelijk allemaal onvoldoende geweest, want de huidige extremisten onder de zionisten hebben felle kritiek op Ben-Gurion. Zo stelt Morris zelf, die tot het Israelische progressieve kamp werd gerekend, het volgende:
Ik denk dat [Ben-Goerion] in 1948 een ernstige historische fout maakte. Hoewel hij het demografische vraagstuk begreep en de noodzaak van het vestigen van een joodse straat zonder een grote Arabische minderheid, werd hij tijdens de oorlog bang. Op het laatst aarzelde hij… Ik weet dat dit de Arabieren en de ruim denkenden en de politiek correcte types verbijsterd. Maar mijn gevoel is dat deze plaats rustiger zou zijn en minder lijden zou kennen als de zaak eens en voor altijd opgelost was geweest… Als aan het eind van het liedje mistroostig blijkt te zijn voor de joden dan zal dit zijn omdat Ben Goerion de verplaatsing in 1948 niet voltooide. Omdat hij een groot en veranderlijke demografische reserve op de Westbank en Gaza en binnen Israël zelf achterliet.
Kortom, ook de laatste 150.000 Palestijnen hadden in 1948 verdreven moeten worden om een etnisch zuivere 'Joodse staat'mogelijk te maken. Afgaande op Hoflands voorstelling van zaken is de vraag of Hofland dit allemaal niet wist. Het antwoord is: hij weet dit alles wel degelijk, ik heb het hem jaren geleden verteld, maar het interesseert hem niet om de eenvoudige reden dat deze feiten niet stroken met zijn ideologische kijk op de werkelijkheid. En dus begint bij hem de 'terreur' tegen het Westen plotseling vanuit het niets. Ook hier bestaat voor de propagandist de wet van oorzaak en gevolg niet. En door het nauwkeurig verzwijgen van motieven, moet de lezer er wel van uitgaan dat het vermoorden van Leon Klinghoffer een zuiver voorbeeld is van het onverklaarbare Kwaad in de wereld, en dat de 'terreur' op aarde daarmee is begonnen. Voor mainstream-opiniemakers die een zo groot mogelijk publiek proberen te bereiken en daardoor zo simplistisch mogelijk de zaken dienen voor te stellen, geldt Kundera's constatering dat:
De mens zich een wereld [wenst] waarin het goed en het kwaad duidelijk van elkaar te onderscheiden zijn, want in hem huist het ingeschapen en ontembare verlangen te oordelen alvorens te begrijpen.
De behaagzieke hoogbejaarde columnist van De Groene Amsterdammer moet het niet hebben van rationele overwegingen, maar van reflexmatige ressentimenten. Hinderlijke feiten moeten daarbij genegeerd worden. En daarom kan de grijze eminentie de geschiedenis van 'de terreur' terugbrengen tot:

Ook de 'grote aanslag' en 'de oorlog in Afghanistan' en 'de executie van Osama bin Laden' kennen bij hem geen voorgeschiedenis, en niemand van De Groene-redactie die het interesseert. De geschiedenis van de terreur begint bij de Palestijnen, die één 'joodse passagier... in zijn rolstoel overboord' zette, en absoluut niet bij de gewelddadige verdrijving van vele honderdduizenden Palestijnse burgers, of bij de bloedbaden die Frankrijk en Engeland in het interbellum in het Midden-Oosten pleegden. Geen sprake van, 'de export van terreur' begint bij ISIS. Het is uiteindelijk een misdadige voorstelling van zaken omdat het lezers niet wil informeren, maar op sleeptouw wil nemen. Het is geen journalistiek maar propaganda, en dat maakt figuren als Hofland zo levensgevaarlijk, want eerst is er de stigmatisering voordat er gemoord kan worden. Zo kan hij zonder te worden gecorrigeerd beweren dat 'Europa meer last [heeft] van ‘de moslims,' waardoor 'onenigheid' is ontstaan die de'Atlantische eenheid' bedreigt, waardoor 'Poetin,' het andere Grote Kwaad in de wereld 'in zijn overtuiging wordt gesterkt dat hij zijn gang kan gaan.' Vervang het woord 'moslims' met het woord joden en dan wordt duidelijk wat er staat:
Europa heeft meer last van 'de joden.'
Hier wordt opnieuw een groep burgers door een blanke Europeaan gestigmatiseerd en daarmee gecriminaliseerd. H.J.A. Hofland doet het voorkomen dat 'wij,' die meetellen in 'Europa,' collectief van oordeel zijn dat 'de moslims' een 'last' zijn, zoals destijds 'de joden' in 'Europa' als 'last' werden gezien, waaronder 'wij,' die meetellen in 'Europa,' moesten zwichtten. Europeanen als ik en de mensen onder wie ik verkeer zien daarentegen 'de moslims' absoluut niet als lastig. Dat een opiniemaker, zeker één die de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft meegemaakt, niet aan de hand van de misdaden van een enkeling een hele groep kan belasteren, is kennelijk niet tot de hoogbejaarde doorgedrongen. Even absurd is zijn stelling dat, omdat
Europa meer last [heeft] van ‘de moslims,'
de NAVO niet onmiddellijk een oorlog met 'Poetin' kon beginnen, want ook dat ligt impliciet in zijn woorden besloten. De hufterigheid van zijn suggestie leidt bij de lezer niet tot enig inzicht, maar tot meer rancune. Mijn kring van goed geïnformeerde burgers zien evenwel eerder het Amerikaans oorlogszuchtig expansionisme als een groot gevaar voor de Europese samenleving. Vandaag, donderdag 5 maart 2015, meldt De Telegraaf dat de Amerikaanse viersterren-admiraal Harry Harris heeft verklaard dat 'de VS in 2020 zeker 60 procent van zijn vloot in de Zuidoost-Aziatische wateren gestationeerd wil hebben,' en wel omdat de gewapende strijd met China de geschiedenis van de 21ste eeuw zal bepalen. Washington duldt geen bedreiging van zijn hegemonie. De Europese NAVO-leden dreigen op die manier in een Derde Wereldoorlog te worden meegezogen, een oorlog waarover Albert Einstein in 1949 zei:
I do not know how the Third World War will be fought, but I can tell you what they will use in the Fourth — rocks!
Met enige mazzel maakt de zo bewonderde 87-jarige H.J.A. Hofland dit slotfeest nog mee. Het zou een logische finale zijn van het Amerikaans exceptionalisme dat uitgaat van de overtuiging als zou de VS dermate bijzonder zijn dat het land het onvervreemdbare recht bezit overal ter wereld zijn wil op te leggen. Die diepe overtuiging werd nog eens onderstreept door de Amerikaanse generaal Smedley Butler. Omdat de meesten van u Smedley Butler niet kennen, stel ik hem aan u voor:
Smedley Darlington Butler[1] (July 30, 1881 – June 21, 1940) was a Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps, the highest rank authorized at that time, and at the time of his death the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34-year career as a Marine, he participated in military actions in the Philippines, China, in Central America and the Caribbean during the Banana Wars, and France in World War I. Butler is well known for having later become an outspoken critic of U.S. wars and their consequences, as well as exposing the Business Plot, a purported plan to overthrow the U.S. government.
By the end of his career, Butler had received 16 medals, five for heroism. He is one of 19 men to twice receive the Medal of Honor, one of three to be awarded both the Marine Corps Brevet Medal and the Medal of Honor, and the only Marine to be awarded the Brevet Medal and two Medals of Honor, all for separate actions.
In 1933 zette Butler het volgende publiekelijk uiteen:
I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism [corporatism]. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.
Dinsdag 10 februari 2015 meldde de Amerikaanse publicist Sheldon Richman, 'vice president of The Future of Freedom Foundation and editor of FFF's monthly journal, Future of Freedom' over Smedley Butler:
Writing in the mid-1930s, Butler foresaw a U.S. war with Japan to protect trade with China and investments in the Philippines, and declared that it would make no sense to the average American:
We would be all stirred up to hate Japan and go to war — a war that might well cost us tens of billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of lives of Americans, and many more hundreds of thousands of physically maimed and mentally unbalanced men.
Of course, for this loss, there would be a compensating profit — fortunes would be made. Millions and billions of dollars would be piled up. By a few. Munitions makers. Bankers. Ship builders. Manufacturers. Meat packers. Speculators. They would fare well.
But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children?
What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits?
Noting that 'until 1898 [and the Spanish-American War] we didn’t own a bit of territory outside the mainland of North America,' he observed that after becoming an expansionist world power, the U.S. government’s debt swelled 25 times and 'we forgot George Washington’s warning about "entangling alliances." We went to war. We acquired outside territory.'
It would have been far cheaper (not to say safer) for the average American who pays the bills to stay out of foreign entanglements. For a very few this racket, like bootlegging and other underworld rackets, brings fancy profits, but the cost of operations is always transferred to the people — who do not profit.
Butler detailed the huge profits of companies that sold goods to the government during past wars and interventions and the banks that made money handling the government’s bonds.
The normal profits of a business concern in the United States are six, eight, ten, and sometimes twelve percent. But war-time profits — ah! that is another matter — twenty, sixty, one hundred, three hundred, and even eighteen hundred percent — the sky is the limit. All that traffic will bear. Uncle Sam has the money. Let’s get it.
Of course, it isn’t put that crudely in war time. It is dressed into speeches about patriotism, love of country, and ‘we must all put our shoulders to the wheel,’ but the profits jump and leap and skyrocket — and are safely pocketed.
And who provides these returns? 'We all pay them — in taxation… But the soldier pays the biggest part of the bill.'
His description of conditions at veterans’ hospitals reminded me of what we’re hearing today about the dilapidated veterans’ health-care system. Butler expressed his outrage at how members of the armed forces are essentially tricked into going to war — at a pitiful wage.
Beautiful ideals were painted for our boys who were sent out to die. This was the 'war to end all wars.' This was the 'war to make the world safe for democracy.' No one mentioned to them, as they marched away, that their going and their dying would mean huge war profits. No one told these American soldiers that they might be shot down by bullets made by their own brothers here. No one told them that the ships on which they were going to cross might be torpedoed by submarines built with United States patents. They were just told it was to be a 'glorious adventure.'
Thus, having stuffed patriotism down their throats, it was decided to make them help pay for the war, too. So, we gave them the large salary of $30 a month.
Making war less likely
Butler proposed ways to make war less likely. Unlike others, he had little faith in disarmament conferences and the like. Rather, he suggested three measures: (1) take the profit out of war by conscripting 'capital and industry and labor' at $30 a month before soldiers are conscripted; (2) submit the question of entry into a proposed war to a vote only of 'those who would be called upon to do the fighting and dying'; (3) 'make certain that our military forces are truly forces for defense only.'
It’s unlikely that those measures would ever be adopted by Congress or signed by a president, and of course conscription is morally objectionable, even if the idea of drafting war profiteers has a certain appeal. But Butler’s heart was in the right place. He was aware that his program would not succeed: 'I am not a fool as to believe that war is a thing of the past.'
Yet in 1936 he formalized his opposition to war in his proposed constitutional 'Amendment for Peace.' It contained three provisions:
• The removal of the members of the land armed forces from within the continental limits of the United States and the Panama Canal Zone for any cause whatsoever is prohibited.
• The vessels of the United States Navy, or of the other branches of the armed service, are hereby prohibited from steaming, for any reason whatsoever except on an errand of mercy, more than five hundred miles from our coast.
• Aircraft of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps is hereby prohibited from flying, for any reason whatsoever, more than seven hundred and fifty miles beyond the coast of the United States.
He elaborated on the amendment and his philosophy of defense in an article in Woman’s Home Companion, September 1936.
It’s a cliché of course to say, 'The more things change, the more they stay the same,' but on reading Butler today, who can resist thinking it? As we watch Barack Obama unilaterally and illegally reinsert the U.S. military into the Iraqi disaster it helped cause and sink deeper into the violence in Syria, we might all join in the declaration with which Butler closes his book:
TO HELL WITH WAR!
Postscript: In 1934 Butler publicly claimed he had been approached by a group of businessmen about leading half a million war veterans in a coup against Franklin D. Roosevelt with the aim of establishing a fascist dictatorship. This is known as the 'Business Plot.' A special committee set up by the U.S. House of Representatives, which heard testimony from Butler and others, is reported to have issued a document containing some confirmation. The alleged plot is the subject of at least one book, The Plot to Seize the White House, and many articles.

Vanzelfsprekend zult u van een 'warmonger' als Henk Hofland nooit deze feiten vernemen. Het zou het einde van zijn loopbaan als 'beste journalist van de twintigste eeuw' betekenen, en liever het einde van de mensheid dan zijn eigen einde als propagandist. De grote historicus Edward Gibbon had gelijk toen hij erop wees dat:
the conscience may slumber in a mixed and middle state between self illusion and voluntary fraud.
Hoflands werk is daarvan een sprekend voorbeeld. Niet de Palestijnen hebben 'Het perpetuum mobile van de terreur' op gang gebracht, maar het Westen gesteund door propagandisten als Henk Hofland. De macht in Europa en de VS is niet van plan die eeuwige beweging te stoppen. Vijf eeuwen westerse overheersing heeft de macht verslaafd gemaakt aan de hegemonie. Een junkie wil doorgaans van alles, behalve afkicken. Zelfbedrog corrumpeert de verslaafde niet alleen, maar maakt hem ook nog eens verslaafd aan zichzelf.
