Dear stan,
Last Tuesday a seismic event occurred within the Democratic Party when a Democratic Socialist upstart candidate trounced an ensconced party boss in a primary battle in a New York City congressional district. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley despite being outspent by roughly 10 to 1 and despite speaking in frank terms about Israel’s behavior in Gaza the last few weeks. Her win in the primary essentially guarantees she will be the next representative for New York’s 14th congressional district. Ocasio-Cortez proves that the ossified pro-war, pro-business establishment Democrats (Republican-lite) can be defeated if an alternative who supports issues that voters want is presented. At any rate, the looming war over Israel in the Democratic Party is that much closer now.
It’s a common refrain among liberal Zionists that Netanyahu et al. is the problem; that there is a liberal pluralistic Israel trying to come out only to be repressed by the more nativist fascistic Israeli right. The rise of Trumpism here has only helped people to make that argument. In this essay criticizing Tom Friedman, Liz Rose confronts much of that argument.
It’s really quite uncanny how so often when someone or something is about to come forth with something damning that person or that thing seems to have the rug pulled out from underneath. As we’ve written before, Al-Jazeera produced a documentary purporting to examine how the Israel Lobby conducts business. It seems that the documentary has been "canned." In a somewhat similar fashion, read how a high-ranking U.N. official did an about-face over his Israel criticism. The truth cannot be told, because if it were, Israel would be finished.
