Frank Westerman's Provinciale Schrijverij 23

The splitting of the atom has changed everything, save our mode of thinking, and thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.
Albert Einstein.

Nuking the Planet:  I’m sure you remember Barack Obama, the guy who entered the Oval Office pledging to work toward ‘a nuclear-free world.’  You know, the president who traveled to Prague in 2009 to say stirringly: ‘So today, I state clearly and with conviction America's commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons... To put an end to Cold War thinking, we will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy, and urge others to do the same.’ That same year, he was awarded the Nobel Prize largely for what he might still do, particularly in the nuclear realm.  Of course, that was all so 2009!

Almost two terms in the Oval Office later, our peace president, the only one who has ever called for nuclear ‘abolition’ -- and whose administration has retired fewer weapons in our nuclear arsenal than any other in the post-Cold War era -- is now presiding over the early stages of a trillion-dollar modernization of that very arsenal. (And that trillion-dollar price tag comes, of course, before the inevitable cost overruns even begin.) It includes full-scale work on the creation of a ‘precision-guided’ nuclear weapon with a ‘dial-back’ lower yield option. Such a weapon would potentially bring nukes to the battlefield in a first-use way, something the U.S. is proudly pioneering.

And that brings me to the September 6th front-page story in the New York Times that caught my eye. Think of it as the icing on the Obama era nuclear cake.  Its headline: ‘Obama Unlikely to Vow No First Use of Nuclear Weapons.’ Admittedly, if made, such a vow could be reversed by any future president. Still, reportedly for fear that a pledge not to initiate a nuclear war would ‘undermine allies and embolden Russia and China... while Russia is running practice bombing runs over Europe and China is expanding its reach in the South China Sea,’ the president has backed down on issuing such a vow. In translation: the only country that has ever used such weaponry will remain on the record as ready and willing to do so again without nuclear provocation, an act that, it is now believed in Washington, would create a calmer planet.

De filmdocumentaire White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki uit 2007 eindigt de cineast Steven Okazaki met de vermelding dat 'There are now enough nuclear weapons in the world to equal 400.000 Hiroshima’s.' 220.000 keer 400.000 is 88 miljard.

http://www.tzum.info/2016/09/recensie-frank-westerman-woord-woord/

There are several sound reasons for concluding that the US-led air strike on the Syrian army base near Deir Ezzor last weekend was a deliberate act of murderous sabotage. One compelling reason is that the Pentagon and CIA knew they had to act in order to kill the ceasefire plan worked out by US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

The compulsion to wreck the already shaky truce was due to the unbearable exposure that the ceasefire plan was shedding on American systematic involvement in the terrorist proxy war on Syria.

Not only that, but the tentative ceasefire was also exposing the elements within the US government responsible for driving the war effort. US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter – the head of the Pentagon – reportedly fought tooth and nail with Obama’s top diplomat John Kerry while the latter was trying to finalize the ceasefire plan with Russia’s Lavrov on the previous weekend of September 9 in Geneva.

While Sergey Lavrov and media reporters were reportedly kept waiting several hours for Kerry to finally emerge to sign off on the deal, the American foreign secretary was delayed by intense haggling in conference calls with Carter and other military chiefs back in Washington. Even days before Kerry’s diplomatic shuttle to Geneva, Carter was disparaging any prospective deal with Russia on a Syrian ceasefire.

It is well documented that both the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency have been running clandestine programs for arming and training anti-government militants in Syria since the outset of the war in March 2011. Officially, Washington claims to be only supporting «moderate, vetted opposition». However, on occasion, Western media reports allude to the deeper sinister connections between the US military and terrorist groups when it has been reported that American weaponry «accidentally» finds its way into the hands of extremist jihadist networks.

This pretense by the US — and its other NATO and Arab allies — of supporting ‘moderate rebels’ and of having no involvement with recognized terror groups like Al Nusra and Daesh (ISIS) was being exposed by the latest ceasefire,

US Had to Kill the Syrian Ceasefire.' Cunningham is een gezaghebbende ‘Former editor and writer for major news media organizations,’ en ‘has written extensively on international affairs, with articles published in several languages.’

Terrorism is a nearly nonexistent danger for Americans. You have a greater chance of being hit by lightning, but fear doesn’t work that way. There’s no 24/7 coverage of global lightning strikes or ‘if you see something, say something’ signs that encourage you to report thunderstorms.

Ik heb het over deskundigen als bijvoorbeeld de Braziliaanse onafhankelijke geopolitieke deskundige Pepe Escobar, die ’writes for RT, Sputnik and TomDispatch, and is a frequent contributor to websites and radio and TV shows ranging from the US to East Asia. He is the former roving correspondent for Asia Times Online.’  Donderdag 22 september 2016 berichtte hij:

Forget about those endless meetings between Sergei Lavrov and John Kerry; forget about Russia’s drive to prevent chaos from reigning in Syria; forget about the possibility of a real ceasefire being implemented and respected by US jihad proxies.

Forget about the Pentagon investigating what really happened around its bombing 'mistake' in Deir Ezzor.

The definitive proof of the Empire of Chaos’s real agenda in Syria may be found in a 2012 Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) document declassified in May last year.

As you scroll down the document, you will find page 291, section C, which reads (in caps, originally):

‘THE WEST, GULF COUNTRIES, AND TURKEY [WHO] SUPPORT THE [SYRIAN] OPPOSITION… THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY OF ESTABLISHING A DECLARED OR UNDECLARED SALAFIST PRINCIPALITY IN EASTERN SYRIA (HASAKA AND DER ZOR), AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THE SUPPORTING POWERS TO THE OPPOSITION WANT, IN ORDER TO ISOLATE THE SYRIAN REGIME, WHICH IS CONSIDERED THE STRATEGIC DEPTH OF THE SHIA EXPANSION (IRAQ AND IRAN).’

The DIA report is a formerly classified SECRET/NOFORN document, which made the rounds of virtually the whole alphabet soup of US intel, from CENTCOM to CIA, FBI, DHS, NGA and the State Department.

It establishes that over four years ago US intel was already hedging its bets between established al-Qaeda in Syria, aka Jabhat al-Nusra, and the emergence of ISIS/ISIL/Daesh, aka the Islamic State.

It’s already in the public domain that by a willful decision, leaked by current Donald Trump adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Washington allowed the emergence of the Islamic State — remember that gleaming white Toyota convoy crossing the open desert? — as a most convenient US strategic asset, and not as the enemy in the remixed, never-ending GWOT (Global War on Terra).

It’s as clear as it gets; a ‘Salafist principality’ is to be encouraged as a means to Divide and Rule over a fragmented Syria in perpetual chaos. Whether it’s established by Jabhat al-Nusra – aka “moderate rebels” in Beltway jargon – or al-Baghdadi’s ‘Califake’ is just a pesky detail.

It gets curioser and curioser as Hasaka and Deir Ezzor are named in the DIA report – and directly targeted by the 'mistaken' Pentagon bombing. No wonder Pentagon chief Ash 'Empire of Whining' Carter took no prisoners to directly sabotage what Kerry had agreed on with Lavrov.

No one will ever see these connections established by US corporate media – as in, for instance, the neocon cabal ruling the Washington Post’s editorial pages. But the best of the blogosphere does not disappoint.

It was also very importantly part of the plan that when those efforts of cooperation commenced Syrian warplanes would be prohibited from flying over areas where the legitimate opposition, al-Nusra, were present, in order to give us the opportunity to work at the separation.

In response to all of this fanfare over Trump's remarks, I argue that the widespread focus given to his displays of racism, narcissism, and arrogance misses the point. The real issue that needs to be examined is what kind of society produces a Donald Trump. Why have Americans flocked to his rallies and roared in support for his bigoted epithets and militant intolerance? Given how the legacies of white colonialism, enslavement, and Jim Crow politics have influenced the nation for generations -- influences that scholars like Angela Davis, Michelle Alexander, and Mumia Abu-Jamal relentlessly critique -- Trump is just the latest manifestation of a social order that has always been dominated by whites and that has always been deeply racist. Trump exemplifies a no-holds-barred form of intolerance that shares the ideology of hate espoused by armed vigilante groups that bomb Planned Parenthood offices, ambush immigrants on the border, and burn mosques. How else to explain that extremists such as Christian nationalists, the Ku Klux Klan, and white militia groups are flocking to support Trump? The national approval ratings that soar following Donald Trump's most outrageous statements offer clear testimony to the degree to which forces of intolerance are seething just beneath the glittering corporate surface of a democracy in deep decline. In addition, Trump provides a more direct and arrogant frontman for a society operating increasingly as a plutocracy -- a society that glorifies money, excess, and celebrity, and that denigrates kindness, community, justice, and equality.

Trump is the symbol of a new authoritarianism, which is to say, the sign of a democracy unable to protect and sustain itself. Trump represents corporate domination set free, a political and economic engine that both fuels and feeds on fear and intolerance. He is also the endpoint of a long-standing political system that is "part bread-and-circuses spectacle, part celebrity obsession, and part media money machine." Trump is the symbol of a frightened society that is increasingly seduced to choose the swagger of a vigilante strongman over the processes of collective sovereignty, the gun over diplomacy, and the wall instead of the bridge. Trump's public rants and humiliating snipes make for great TV, and are, as Frank Rich once argued, "another symptom of a political virus that can't be quarantined and whose cure is as yet unknown." What the American public needs is an ongoing analysis of Trump's messaging in the context of the historical legacies of white bigotry and intolerance, and an analysis of how right-wing politics have tapped such bigotry to further the self-serving interests of a small economic elite. Such an analysis would situate Trump in the context of the historical racism that has smoldered as a form low-intensity warfare in the United States since its inception, and that has arguably worsened for communities of color since the rise of neo-conservativism in the 1980s. Trump has simply discarded the euphemisms and deploys the ruse of national security to take bigotry, sexism, xenophobia, and political bullying to more aggressive levels.

Trump's rise indicates the increasing confluence of religious fundamentalists and economic extremists who insist that social, racial, economic, and environmental justice are wrong, lead to big government, and are malignant to the nation. Chris Hedges captures the authoritarian and militaristic nature of the Christian right:

‘The cult of masculinity, as in all fascist movements, pervades the ideology of the Christian right. The movement uses religion to sanctify military and heroic "virtues," glorify blind obedience and order over reason and conscience, and pander to the euphoria of collective emotions. Feminism and homosexuality, believers are told, have rendered the American male physically and spiritually impotent. Jesus, for the Christian right, is a man of action, casting out demons, battling the Antichrist, attacking hypocrites and ultimately slaying nonbelievers. This cult of masculinity, with its glorification of violence, is appealing to the powerless. It stokes the anger of many Americans, mostly white and economically disadvantaged, and encourages them to lash back at those who, they are told, seek to destroy them. The paranoia about the outside world is fostered by bizarre conspiracy theories, many of which are prominent in the rhetoric of those leading the government shutdown. Believers, especially now, are called to a perpetual state of war with the "secular humanist" state. The march, they believe, is irreversible. Global war, even nuclear war, is the joyful harbinger of the Second Coming. And leading the avenging armies is an angry, violent Messiah who dooms billions of apostates to death.’

Trump is just one boisterous voice speaking for a sector of white America that feels threatened by people of color, Muslims, immigrants, and people of conscience who form communities of solidarity and resistance. The end-time religious wars that many in the Republican Party embrace are not much different than those professed by ISIS and other fanatics. It is also the party of political fundamentalists who hate democracy, attack women's rights, destroy or underfund healthcare programs that benefit the poor, turn back hard-won voting rights, and believe governance is a tool of the financial elite.

Trump is simply the most visible and vocal member of a fractured party made up of frightened Americans, religious fundamentalists, and self-serving economic extremists who believe that the market should arbitrate and dominate all aspects of government and society. Trump represents a new form of social disorder -- intolerant, authoritarian, and violent -- that sees preventable inequality as part of the natural order of things. Guns, walls, laws, surveillance, prisons, media, and wars are there to serve the interest of the wealthy winners, and to keep the rest of the population in check. Bankers who commit theft, fraud, and acts of economic mass destruction never feel the cold steel of handcuffs tighten on their wrists. Corporate suspects never get shot down accidentally in the streets, as do unarmed Blacks, by white cops who feel threatened by skin color. Trump's rise reinforces these injustices and gives anxious whites a boastful businessman and TV celebrity to rule as their strongman.

More than any other recent politician, Trump speaks to the existential fears and anger of many Americans who have every right to be distressed over their lives and their futures. These are people who live on the edge of financial ruin, people who have few resources for retirement, who are either unemployed or work in dead-end jobs. Not all in Trump's base are racist. Many of them are fed up and angry over establishment political parties whose allegiance is to the rich, not to them, and it shows in the increasing anxiety and despair of middle-aged white Americans who are dying early, and who ‘are committing suicide with guns, drugs and alcohol at shocking levels.’ Trump has tapped into this anger by exposing the class-specific fault lines that dominate the Republican Party while directing it into a discourse of hate, fear-mongering, xenophobia, racism, and violence. Trump has proven to be a formidable foe in revealing the elitist pretentions and class boundaries of the ruling-class wing of the Republican Party, and his appeal may rest less on ideology than on his struggle to wrest power from the GOP establishment. Frank Rich is worth repeating at length on this issue. He writes:

‘What GOP elites can't escape is the sinking feeling that a majority of Republican voters are looking for a president who will repudiate them and, implicitly, their class. Trump refuses to kowtow to the Establishment -- and it is precisely that defiance, as articulated in his ridicule of Romney and Jeb Bush and Megyn Kelly and Little Marco, that endears him to Republican voters and some Democrats as well. The so-called battle for the "soul" of the Republican Party is a battle over power, not ideology. Trump has convinced millions of Americans that he will take away the power from the pinheads on high and return it to people below who feel (not wrongly) that they've gotten a raw deal. It's the classic populist pitch, and it will not end well for those who invest their faith in Trump. He cares about no one but himself and would reward his own class with extravagant tax cuts like any Republican president. But the elites, who represent the problem, have lost any standing that might allow them to pretend to be part of the solution.’

As the language of community and the public spheres collapse, people are increasingly atomized and isolated, and believe that they have little control over their lives. Republicans have taken this sense of anger and helplessness and have used it for the last thirty years to tell their supporters that they should be angry about Blacks, immigrants, big government, Muslims, terrorists, and a host of other issues that have nothing to do with the problems they face daily.

Champions of American exceptionalism hold that because of its national credo, historical evolution, and unique origens, America is a special nation with a special role — possibly ordained by God — to play in human history. The belief in American exceptionalism is a fundamental aspect of U.S. cultural capital and national identity. It is an essential part of America’s political, cultural, and social DNA.

Air Force,’ dat ‘there may be times when it would be most efficient to use nuclear weapons.’ Om een nucleair armageddon mogelijk te maken reorganiseerde LeMay ‘the Strategic Air Command (SAC) into an effective instrument of nuclear war.’

There have been two recent subtle changes to [NATO’s] approach. Until last year, it was assumed that NATO would hold back until facing defeat in a conventional war before escalating to nuclear weapons. Now, however, early use is the policy. Nuclear planners at NATO Head Quarters talk openly of demonstrations shots with nuclear weapons at the beginning of the hostilities. General Bernard Rogers, who recently retired as NATO commander, admitted this shift to early use to nuclear weapons in an interview with ‘International Defence Review' last year.
Oliver Ramsbotham. Modernizing Nato’s Nuclear Weapons. 1989

The Superweapon and the American Imagination (2008). In de laatste hoofdstukken schrijft hij over ‘The Science-Fiction Project for the New American Century’:

Although he was a key figure in some of Washington's late twentieth-century foreign adventures, Roy L. Prosterman is hardly a household name. Prosterman was the designer of the ‘land reform’ implemented in Vietnam in conjunction with the CIA's Operation Phoenix, a program of wholesale torture and assassination responsible for the death of at least forty thousand civilians, for which he penned (schreef. svh) a legal and moral justification. Later he engineered similar ‘land reform’ programs for the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship in the Philippines and the right-wing junta in El Salvador. During the 1970s, Prosterman also occasionally published science fiction in ‘Analog’ (een beroemd ‘Amerikaans sciencefiction-tijdschrift, dat in 1930 werd gestart.’ svh) under the editorship of Ben Bova. In ‘A Short History of World War  LXXVIII,’ he projected future warfare similar to that imagined by Tesla (Nikola Tesla, ‘wordt gezien als een van de grootste ingenieurs en uitvinders aller tijden.’ svh), with nation fighting harmless conflicts purely between superweapons and other machines battling on the Moon in a kind of spectator sport for Earth. In ‘Peace Probe,’ a more ominous story published in the July 1973 Analog, Prosterman prophetically led the way from the Pax Americana fantasies of the nineteenth century to those of the twenty-first century.

‘Peace Probe’ lays out Washington’s developing vision of how to achieve universal peace under America's benevolent rule. In the very near future, a U.S. President, being ‘a very good and a very wise man,’ issues a Unilateral Declaration stipulating that ‘any nation, entity or person other than the United States’ found to possess any ‘weapons of mass destruction’ or ‘such other weapons, armies and armaments as the President of the United States shall from time to time designate’ shall be annihilated by the United States. To enforce this decree, he establishes the Unilateral Declaration Agency (UDA), which is authorized to use drugs and ‘other techniques’ to ‘probe’ the minds of ‘officials and citizens throughout the world, ‘without limitations as to persons, times, or places’ to guarantee that the world will remain perpetually under the sway of the Pax Americana. This vision of a global Operation Phoenix is narrated by a heroic UDA agent who ferrets out a plot (blootlegt. svh) by a handful of renegade (afvallige. svh) Argentines who are so evil that they plan to force the United States to deal with other nations ‘as ‘equals.’ By using chemical interrogation to unmask the conspirators, he spares the population of Argentina in the nick of time (op het nippertje. svh), from the thirty-six missiles, each armed with a 5-megaton thermonuclear warhead, already launched toward Buenos Aires by the UDA.

Nineteen years later — and months after President George H. W. Bush proclaimed that he had cured our ‘Vietnam syndrome’ — Prosterman’s sciencefiction formula for achieving planetary peace seemed to have metamorphosed into the planning document for U.S. policy throughout the world: the 1992 Defense Planning Guidance authored by Paul Wolfowitz under the direction of then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney. Here was the bold outline of a strategy for U.S. total global hegemony and the permanent elimination of any potential rival for power.

In the closing weeks of the presidential election campaign of 2000, Wolfowitz (joods-Amerikaanse voormalige staatssecretaris van Defensie, als fanatiek pro-Israel neoconservatief was hij groot pleitbezorger van de illegale inval in Irak. svh) and his cohort from the ‘Project for the New American Century’ published an astonishing seventy-six-page document entitled ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategy, Forces, and Resources for a New Century.’ This vision of the ‘New American Century’ can be read instructively as a form of twenty-first-century science fiction, a deadly serious descendent of what might once have seemed those preposterous, and even laughable, late nineteenth- and early twentieth century visions of the Pax Americana.

Indeed, the authors from the Project for the New American Century present their strategy as the means to preserve and extend what they explicitly define as the ‘global Pax Americana!' To make sure that ‘the current Pax Americana’ lasts for at least the entire twenty-first century, they call for a mammoth increase of military spending utterly unrestricted by any semblance of balanced budgets and an enormous deployment of forces in a new rind of bases encircling an penetrating Asia. The Middle East and southern Asia are immediate targets, and Iraq is a focal point for the strategy: ‘While the unresolved conflict with Iraq provides the immediate justification, the need for a substantial American force presence in the Gulf transcends the issue of of the regime of Saddam Hussein.’ They acknowledge, with considerable regret, that their projected ‘process transformation’ is likely to be a long one,’ unless it is fortuitously accelerated by ‘some catastrophic and catalyzing — like a new Pearl Harbor.’

Professor Bruce Franklin:

The New American Century authors become truly ecstatic as they project their images of war in space, from space, and in cyberspace (which their report calls ‘cyber-war’). Here it becomes truly difficult to distinguish between this strategic document and the Robert Heinlein-Ben Bova-Jerry Pournelle-Newt Gingrich branch of ultra-militaristic and technophiliac science fiction. But that science fiction of ultra-militaristic and technophiliac science fiction. But that science fiction had already become part of the Pentagon's strategic vision of the twenty-first century.

As General Joseph W. Ashy, commander-in-chief of the U.S. Space Command declared in 1966, ‘Some people don’t want to hear this,’ ‘but — absolutely — we’re going to fight in space. We’re going to fight from space and we’re going to fight into space.’ The following year, the U.S. Space Command published its ‘Vision for 2020,’ with a cover featuring a satellite (similar to those in the Defense Department picture on the cover of this book) blasting targets on Earth with bright red beam weapons. The title page, laid out to replicate the receding three-dimensional roll-ups that open the Star War movies, declares:

                             'Space Command — dominating
the space dimension of military operations
to protect US interests and investment
                                               integrating Space Forces into warfighting
capabilities across the full spectrum of conflict'

'Full Spectrum Dominance’ is the repeated mantra of the brochure, which explains the need to fight in space in order to control the planet from space: ‘As space systems become lucrative military targets, there will be a critical need to control the space medium to ensure US dominance on future battlefields.’ It argues that both missile defense and terrestrial attacks will come from space weapons: ‘Development of ballistic missile defenses using space systems and planning for precision strikes from space offers a counter to the worldwide proliferation of WMD.’ All this is part of ‘Global Engagement,’ ‘the application of precision force from, to, and through space.’

Exactly one year after the publication of ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategy, Forces, and Resources for a New Century,’ its authors got their ‘catastrophic and catalyzing event — like a new Pearl Harbor.’ But it wasn't a gigantic attack by a major industrial power striking with the superweapons of 1941—a fleet of airi major industrial power striking with the superweapons of 1941 — a fleet of aircraft carriers and their bombers. It was just nineteen guys armed with box cutters who unleashed the New American Century.

The splitting of the atom has changed everything, save our mode of thinking, and thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.
