Voor veel mensen in de VS en Europa, en ook in Nederland, is Poetin de gedroomde sterke man, het tegenwicht tegen het op de idealen van de Verlichting gebaseerde wereldbeeld van Obama. Hier de mensheid, daar de natie. Hier de gemeenschap op basis van gelijkheid, daar de superioriteit van de eigen cultuur. Poetins ideologische aantrekkingskracht is de enige reden dat een leider van een economisch derderangs wereldmacht erin slaagt het in alle opzichten superieure Amerika zo te ontregelen.

De joods-Amerikaanse socioloog Todd Gitlin en de Joods-Israelische intellectueel Liel Leibovitz, hoogleraar Communications aan de New York University, beginnen in hun studie The Chosen Peoples. America, Israel and the Ordeals of Divine Election (2010) het tweede hoofdstuk, getiteld ‘His Almost Chosen People,’ met de volgende beschrijving:

America is not just ‘a nation with the soul of a church,’ as G.K. Chesterton wrote in 1922: it is a nation with the mind of a crusade. Through centuries of change, through huge religious, cultural, social, economic, and political shifts down to the present day, America’s leaders and much of the populace have regarded the country as chosen for glory. ‘Like Israel of old,’ wrote America’s foremost theologian, Reinhold Niebuhr, in 1963, ‘we were a messianic nation from our birth.’

In fact, this understated the case. Messianic ideals long preceded the birth of the American nation; they were present at the nation's conception and long gestation. Christopher Columbus wrote to the Spanish court in 1500: ‘God made me the messenger of the new heaven and the new earth of which he spoke in the Apocalypse of St. John…  and he showed me the spot where to find it.’ Independently, many Puritans took up and applied the older idea that England enjoyed a covenant with God — a ‘covenant of grace,’ they called it — even if they hesitated at first about whether the Promised Land was to be found in the new England or the old. Even in vastly more commercial and secular Virginia, the English settlers had scarcely arrived before they proclaimed the new land sanctified. ‘God hath opened the door of Virginia… God hath opened this passage unto us, and led us by the hand unto this work,’ preached the New Virginian Alexander Whitaker in 1613, around the time he converted and baptized Pocahontas. Even colonists who denied that New England corresponded to Canaan defended their territorial claims with reference to Genesis 1:28 — ‘replenish the earth and subdue it.’

the image was used a number of times in American politics. On 9 January 1961, President-Elect John F. Kennedy returned the phrase to prominence during an address delivered to the General Court of Massachusetts:

‘I have been guided by the standard John Winthrop set before his shipmates on the flagship Arbella three hundred and thirty-one years ago, as they, too, faced the task of building a new government on a perilous frontier. “We must always consider,” he said, “that we shall be as a city upon a hill — the eyes of all people are upon us.” Today the eyes of all people are truly upon us — and our governments, in every branch, at every level, national, state and local, must be as a city upon a hill — constructed and inhabited by men aware of their great trust and their great responsibilities. For we are setting out upon a voyage in 1961 no less hazardous than that undertaken by the Arbella in 1630. We are committing ourselves to tasks of statecraft no less awesome than that of governing the Massachusetts Bay Colony, beset as it was then by terror without and disorder within. History will not judge our endeavors — and a government cannot be selected — merely on the basis of color or creed or even party affiliation. Neither will competence and loyalty and stature, while essential to the utmost, suffice in times such as these. For of those to whom much is given, much is required…

President Ronald Reagan referred to the same event and used the same image on the eve of his election in 1980:

‘I have quoted John Winthrop's words more than once on the campaign trail this year — for I believe that Americans in 1980 are every bit as committed to that vision of a shining “city on a hill,” as were those long ago settlers… These visitors to that city on the Potomac do not come as white or black, red or yellow; they are not Jews or Christians; conservatives or liberals; or Democrats or Republicans. They are Americans awed by what has gone before, proud of what for them is still… a shining city on a hill.’

And in his January 11, 1989, farewell speech to the nation:

‘I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That's how I saw it, and see it still.’ […]

President Reagan's adopted son Michael Reagan wrote a book entitled ‘The City on a Hill: Fulfilling Ronald Reagan's Vision for America (1997).’

In 2000, Marc A. Thiessen, George W. Bush's speechwriter, contended in a Weekly Standard article that there are two competing visions of internationalism in the 21st century: the ‘global multilateralism' of the Clinton-Gore Democrats vs. the ‘American exceptionalism' of the Reagan-Bush Republicans.

In 2004, President George W. Bush said:

‘Like generations before us, we have a calling from beyond the stars to stand for freedom. This is the everlasting dream of America…’

In his commencement address on June 2, 2006, at the University of Massachusetts Boston, then U.S. Senator Barack Obama also made reference to the topic:

‘It was right here, in the waters around us, where the American experiment began. As the earliest settlers arrived on the shores of Boston and Salem and Plymouth, they dreamed of building a City upon a Hill. And the world watched, waiting to see if this improbable idea called America would succeed. More than half of you represent the very first member of your family to ever attend college. In the most diverse university in all of New England, I look out at a sea of faces that are African-American and Hispanic-American and Asian-American and Arab-American. I see students that have come here from over 100 different countries, believing like those first settlers that they too could find a home in this City on a Hill — that they too could find success in this unlikeliest of places.’ 

In 2016, the 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney incorporated the idiom into a condemnation of Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign:

‘His domestic policies would lead to recession; his foreign policies would make America and the world less safe. He has neither the temperament nor the judgment to be president, and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city on a hill.’

During the 2016 presidential race, Texas Senator Ted Cruz used the phrase during his speech announcing the suspension of his campaign. During his speech at the Democratic National Convention the same year, President Barack Obama also alluded to President Ronald Reagan's use of the phrase as he proposed a more optimistic vision of America in contrast to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Hoe tevreden de christelijke en seculiere Amerikanen ook mogen zijn over hun ‘city upon a hill,’ vanaf het allereerste begin wisten de ontelbare slachtoffers dat de ‘shining’ metafoor gepaard ging met een uiterst gewelddadige en herhaaldelijk genocidale politiek. De daden van de witte christen kwamen nooit voort uit het evangelie van de liefde, maar uit ‘de geest van een kruisvaart.’ Nog steeds wordt de Amerikaan gemotiveerd door de diepe overtuiging dat hij het recht bezit de medemens te veranderen in een weerspiegeling van hemzelf. En als dit niet snel genoeg lukt dat hij tevens gemachtigd is de dwarsliggers uit de weg te ruimen. Het is niet vreemd dat de Amerikaanse historicus David R. Wagner en de Amerikaanse auteur Jack Dempsey in hun boek Mystic Fiasco. How the Indians Won the Pequot War (2004) over de geschiedschrijving van de witte veroveraars tot de slotsom komen dat de beschrijvingen van 

The Pequot War are not histories, or military histories: if they scarcely describe what happened, they cannot guide anyone to victory. They are instead a sacred tantrum (woedeaanval. svh) of frustrated wishes for imperial domination: sacred because crucial to the colonizers’ fantasies of themselves, and because they are not to be questioned , so convenient are they to self-gratification at het expense of other people. 

This did not prevent the captains’ chronicles and writings after them from becoming an important blueprint for United States colonial expansion westward, a new instrument of ‘progress’ confined within a human history now called Before and After Jesus. This war's paradigms — ignorance of the  land,  childish  ‘savages,’ innocent and all-conquering white men with guns, The Bible to hold it together and bless each windfall others’ wealth — appeared to ‘work’ wherever the violence of total war could make them seem to. The short-term rewards of murder outlive the men who commit it, but their children inherit wealth that blinds conscience to the facts (the only hope of healing) and makes them sick with its injustice. 

None of it proves the heroes' methods, however convenient and compelling. It condemns their children to keep running away from ‘daemons’ (mistakes with consequences) unrecognized, until now and then, the speaking world and the presence of ‘others’ demand they face facts. Conditioned (socialized, educated and rewarded) for looking anywhere but within themselves for causes,  the builders of empire follow our captains at Mystic. Inevitably faced with the ‘empty’ truth, they burn and kill their way out and swear that, by God, they're in control. God, of course, never shows up with confirmation; but wealth and silence will serve until He does. 

Hier wordt door twee Amerikaanse intellectuelen de kern samengevat van wat een polder-propagandist als Bas Heijne ‘het in alle opzichten superieure Amerika’ noemt. Deze socialized, educated and rewarded waanzin verklaart tevens Geert Mak’s ‘geheime liefde’ voor 'de Amerikanen,’ die volgens hem ‘hele optimistische mensen [zijn] vergeleken met ons fatalistische Europeanen.’ Beide mainstream-opiniemakers zijn niet in staat hun eigen ‘narcisme’ door te prikken om zodoende het desastreuze Amerikaanse ‘exceptionalisme’ te kunnen doorgronden. Beide profeten van het Vooruitgangsgeloof zijn blind voor de werkelijkheid zoals bijvoorbeeld de grote marxistische cultuurfilosoof Walter Benjamin die zag. Kort voor zijn dood schreef hij over Paul Klee’s aquarel Angelus Novus:

Er bestaat een afbeelding van Paul Klee, dat Angelus Novus heet. Er staat een engel op afgebeeld die zo te zien op het punt staat zich te verwijderen van iets waar het zijn blik strak op gericht houdt. Zijn ogen en zijn mond zijn opengesperd, hij heeft zijn vleugels gespreid. Zo moet de engel van de geschiedenis eruit zien. Zijn gelaat is naar het verleden gewend. Waar wij een reeks gebeurtenissen waarnemen, ziet hij één enkele catastrofe en daarin wordt zonder enig respijt puinhoop op puinhoop gestapeld, die hem voor de voeten geworpen wordt. De engel zou wel willen blijven, de doden tot leven wekken en dat wat verbrijzeld is weer tot een geheel maken. Maar zijn vleugels vangen de wind die uit het paradijs waait, een storm die zo hard is dat hij ze niet kan sluiten. Deze storm stuwt hem onweerstaanbaar voort, de toekomst in die hij de rug heeft toegekeerd, terwijl de stapel puin vóór hem tot aan de hemel groeit. Deze storm is wat wij vooruitgang noemen.

Het is deze onstuitbare ‘vooruitgang’ die tot Auschwitz en Hiroshima heeft geleid, én tot de zelfmoord van Benjamin, toen hij als joodse Duitser op de vlucht was voor de even genocidale Nazi’s. Wagner en Dempsey schrijven over de continuïteit van het Amerikaanse geweld -- dat door de mainstream op één lijn wordt gesteld met de vooruitgang -- ‘The colony goes about its business of globalization, its wishes and methods the same from Wounded Knee and Vietnam to Middle Eastern oilfields,’ en constateren vervolgens met betrekking tot de Puriteinen dat: 

[t]hanks to the educational traditions born of the same theology, Old Testament instructions on how to profitably subdue the ‘unbelieving outsiders’ of cosmopolitan Canaan scarcely changed as Puritan colonies became the ‘exceptionalist’ United States:

‘The ancient inhabitants of your holy land you (Yahweh) hated for their loathsome practices, their deed of sorcery and unholy rites… Your determined to destroy them at our fathers’ hands, so that  this land might receive a colony of God’s children worthy of its. Even so, since these were men, you treated them leniently… to destroy them bit by bit… although you knew very well they were inherently evil… and fixed in their cast of mind,  for they were a rate accursed from the beginning. (The Book of Wisdom 12:3-11)’ 

Dit was het mens- wereldbeeld ruim 350 jaar geleden waarmee de christelijke, witte Europeanen de werkelijkheid in ‘The Promised Land’ te lijf gingen. Zij spiegelden zich aan de joodse stammen die, volgens het Oud-Testamentische boek Deuteronomium, van hun God ‘het beloofde land,’ kregen, op voorwaarde dat 

van de steden dezer volken, die u de HEERE, uw God, ten erve geeft, gij niets [zult] laten leven, dat adem heeft… gij zult ze ganselijk verbannen: de Hethieten, en de Amorieten, en de Kanaänieten, en de Ferezieten, de Hevieten, en de Jebusieten, gelijk als u de HEERE, uw God, geboden heeft.

In zijn boek American Holocaust. The Conquest Of The New World (1992), hoogleraar American Studies, wijst David E. Stannard erop dat kapitein Underhill -- betrokken bij het in brand steken van het Pequot dorp en ‘killing any who attempted to flee’ -- in een verslag zijn lezers ervan verzekerde dat ‘sometimes the Scripture declares women and children must perish with their parents.’ Zij waren als het ware ‘collateral damage,’ want, zoals Stannard schrijft:

Just because they were weak and helpless and unarmed, in short, did not make their deaths any less a delight to the Puritan’s God. For as William Bradford (gouverneur van de Plymouth Colony. svh) described the British reaction to the scene:

It was a fearful sight to see them thus frying in the fire and the streams of blood quenching the same, and horrible was the stink and scent thereof; but the victory seemed a sweet sacrifice, an they gave the praise thereof to God, who had wrought so wonderfully for them, thus to enclose their enemies in their hands and give them so speedy a victory over so proud and insulting an enemy.   

Added the Puritan divine Cotton Mather (een sociaal en politiek invloedrijke Puriteinse predikant uit New England, uit zijn dagboeken blijkt dat hij sterk geloofde in hekserij en bezetenheid door de duivel en er een intense vrees en haat voor voelde. svh), as he celebrated the event many years later in his Magnalia Christi Americana: ‘In a little more than one  hour, five or six hundred of these barbarians were dismissed from a world that was burdened with them.’ Mason (Puriteinse kapitein van de ‘Colonial forces in the Pequot War.' svh) himself counted the Pequot dead at six or seven hundred, with only seven taken captive and seven escaped. It was, he said joyfully, ‘the just Judgment of God.’

En zoals Bob Dylan in 1963 dichtte:

Maar ook in de geseculariseerde vorm van het narcistisch ‘exceptionalism’ heerst dezelfde  genocidale overtuiging dat soms ‘whole populations of the “other” side (never their own) “must perish,”’ zoals de Amerikaanse oorlogsmisdaden in ondermeer Irak aantonen tijdens de ‘Turkey Shoot’ in 1991 op de ‘Highway of Death,’ waarbij de

death toll from the attack remains unknown and controversial. British journalist Robert Fisk said he ‘lost count of the Iraqi corpses crammed into the smouldering wreckage or slumped face down in the sand’ at the main site and to see hundreds of corpses strewn up the road all the way to the Iraqi border. American journalist Bob Drogin reported seeing ‘scores’ of dead soldiers ‘in and around the vehicles, mangled and bloated in the drifting desert sands.’ […] In 1993, The Washington Post interviewed an Iraqi survivor of the attacks: ‘There were hundreds of cars destroyed, soldiers screaming. [...] It was nighttime as the bombs fell, lighting up charred cars, bodies on the side of the road and soldiers sprawled on the ground, hit by cluster bombs as they tried to escape from their vehicles. I saw hundreds of soldiers like this… Photojournalist Peter Turnley published photographs of mass burials at the scene. Turnley wrote: ‘I flew from my home in Paris to Riyadh when the ground war began and arrived at the “mile of death” very early in the morning on the day the war stopped. Few other journalists were there when I arrived at this incredible scene, with carnage that was strewn all over. On this mile stretch were cars and trucks with wheels still turning and radios still playing. Bodies were scattered along the road. Many have asked how many people died during the war with Iraq, and the question has never been well answered. That first morning, I saw and photographed a U.S. military “graves detail” burying many bodies in large graves. I don't recall seeing many television images of these human consequences. Nor do I remember many photographs of these casualties being published.’ Time magazine commented: ‘The pictures were among the most stunning to come out of the gulf war: mile after mile of burned, smashed, shattered vehicles of every description — tanks, armored cars, trucks, autos, even stolen Kuwaiti fire trucks — littering the highway from Kuwait City to Basra. To some Americans, the pictures were also sickening.’ 

Irak: ‘Highway of Death.’

In hun historische studie Mystic Fiasco concluderen Wagner en Dempsey dan ook dat:

‘Progress’ wil be a murderous myth until the goal for measuring it can bear to be stated in plain language.

People worldwide would like to hear it. On November 8, 2002, National   Public   Radio's   All Things Considered detailed an international study conducted over several years by Toronto consulting-firm Environics International. It found that 66% of people surveyed in 47 proclaimed democracies do not believe that their governments' ways express ‘the will of the people’: they rather perceive that an elite, unelected, and hidden few enforce their own will from a narrow top down and around the world, through economics  as  well  as  war.  The  myth  of  a  ‘free marketplace’ that spontaneously ‘fills needs’ by the miraculously rational ‘choices’ of its members seems a fable that only the ‘top’ believes. ‘People know what's going on, they always do,’ the Environics spokesperson said; ‘and they're looking in other places for other kinds of leaders for the future.' 

Mystic is exemplarisch voor de geschiedenis van de VS, genocidale slachtpartijen herhaalden zich door de eeuwen heen. Begin twintigste eeuw vroeg Mark Twain, naar aanleiding van de Amerikaanse bloedbaden op de Filippijnen die vele honderdduizenden doden veroorzaakte, in zijn ‘anti-imperialistische’ essays sarcastisch af of ‘het zo zou kunnen zijn dat er twee soort beschavingen bestaan — één voor binnenlandse consumptie en één voor de heidense markt?’ Twain zette in  To the Person Sitting in Darkness uiteen dat:  

Extending the Blessings of Civilization to our Brother who Sits in Darkness has been a good trade and has paid well, on the whole; and there is money in it yet, if carefully worked--but not enough, in my judgment, to make any considerable risk advisable. The People that Sit in Darkness are getting to be too scarce--too scarce and too shy. And such darkness as is now left is really of but an indifferent quality, and not dark enough for the game. The most of those People that Sit in Darkness have been furnished with more light than was good for them or profitable for us. We have been injudicious.

In The New York Herald van 15 oktober 1900 liet hij weten dat:


'I have seen that we do not intend to free, but to subjugate the people of the Philippines. We have gone to conquer, not to redeem… And so I am an anti-imperialist. I am opposed to having the [American] eagle put its talons on any other land.’

Typerend is tevens dat ook het taalgebruik niet veranderde, dezelfde Amerikaanse troepen die eerst tegen de Indianen werden ingezet en naderhand tegen de Filipijnse vrijheidsstrijders vochten, noemden het gebied 'Indian Country,' een term die zelfs door Amerikaanse militairen in Vietnam en Irak werd gebruikt. In zijn boek Confronting Imperialism (2007) schreef de Amerikaanse geleerde Jim Zwick, die zich specialiseerde in het werk van Twain, dat de

U.S. military’s use of waterboarding began during the Philippine-American War. Euphemistically called the ‘water cure,’ it was said to be a form of torture the U.S. ‘inherited’ from the Spanish. They had used it since the Inquisition. In his 1902 essay ‘A Defense of General Funston,’ Mark Twain wrote:

Funston’s example has bred many imitators, and many ghastly additions to our history: the torturing of Filipinos by the awful ‘water-cure,’ for instance, to make them confess — what? Truth? Or lies? How can one know which it is they are telling? For under unendurable pain a man confesses anything that is required of him, true or false, and his evidence is worthless…

Desondanks werd een eeuw later deze vorm van foltering door de VS nog steeds toegepast. Wikipedia:

Waterboarding is a form of water torture in which water is poured over a cloth covering the face and breathing passages of an immobilized captive, causing the individual to experience the sensation of drowning. Waterboarding can cause extreme pain, dry drowning, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, lasting psychological damage, and death. Adverse physical consequences can manifest themselves months after the event, while psychological effects can last for years.

In the most common method of waterboarding, the captive's face is covered with cloth or some other thin material, and the subject is immobilized on their back at an incline of 10 to 20 degrees. Torturers pour water onto the face over the breathing passages, causing an almost immediate gag reflex and creating a drowning sensation for the captive… Victims of waterboarding are at extreme risk of sudden death…

The term water board torture appeared in press reports as early as 1976. In late 2007, it was widely reported that the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was waterboarding extrajudicial prisoners and that the Office of Legal Counsel, Department of Justice, had authorized the procedure among enhanced interrogation techniques… 

In August 2002 and March 2003, in its war on terror, the George W. Bush administration, through Jay S. Bybee, the Office of Legal Counsel, Department of Justice, issued what became known as the Torture Memos after being leaked in 2004.[12] These legal opinions (including the 2002 Bybee memo) argued for a narrow definition of torture under US law. The first three were addressed to the CIA, which took them as authority to use the described enhanced interrogation techniques (more generally classified as torture) on detainees classified as enemy combatants.

Acht decennia na de bloedbaden in de Filippijnen was het weer raak toen Amerikaanse soldaten vrijwel alle burgers van het Vietnamese dorp My Lai doodschoten. Wikipedia:

De meesten van hen — onder wie baby's en kinderen die nog niet zelfstandig konden lopen — werden in een greppel gegooid en vervolgens met M60 automatische vuurwapens vermoord… Het exacte aantal slachtoffers is nooit vastgesteld, maar het monument op de plek van het bloedbad draagt 504 namen.


Getuigenverslagen lijken  sprekend op die van de Pequot Vesting, drie eeuwen eerder:

When PFC Michael Bernhardt entered the subhamlet of Xom Lang, the massacre was underway:

‘I walked up and saw these guys doing strange things... Setting fire to the hootches (woningen met dak van bladeren. svh) and huts and waiting for people to come out and then shooting them... going into the hootches and shooting them up... gathering people in groups and shooting them... As I walked in you could see piles of people all through the village... all over. They were gathered up into large groups. I saw them shoot an M79 [grenade launcher] into a group of people who were still alive. But it was mostly done with a machine gun. They were shooting women and children just like anybody else. We met no resistance and I only saw three captured weapons. We had no casualties. It was just like any other Vietnamese village — old papa-sans, women and kids. As a matter of fact, I don't remember seeing one military-age male in the entire place, dead or alive.’

One group of 20–50 villagers was walked to the south of Xom Lang and killed on a dirt road. According to Ronald Haeberle's eyewitness account of the massacre, in one instance,

‘There were some South Vietnamese people, maybe fifteen of them, women and children included, walking on a dirt road maybe 100 yards [90 m] away. All of a sudden the GIs just opened up with M16s. Beside the M16 fire, they were shooting at the people with M79 grenade launchers... I couldn't believe what I was seeing.’

Lieutenant Calley testified that he heard the shooting and arrived on the scene. He observed his men firing into a ditch with Vietnamese people inside and he then started shooting, with an M16, from a distance of 5 feet. Then, a helicopter landed on the other side of the ditch and a pilot asked Calley if he could provide any medical assistance to the wounded civilians in My Lai; Calley admitted replying that a hand grenade was the only available means that he had for their evacuation. After that, around 11:00, Captain Medina radioed to cease fire and the 1st Platoon took a lunch break.

Het bestaan van de zogeheten ‘vrije pers’ heeft de doctrine van het ‘exceptionalisme’ niet verzwakt, laat staan onmogelijk gemaakt, maar juist versterkt. Kenmerkend voor de mainstream-propaganda zijn uitspraken als ‘het in alle opzichten superieure Amerika,’ van Bas Heijne, en Geert Mak’s bewering dat de VS ‘decennialang als ordebewaker en politieagent’ in de wereld optrad. Of de lachwekkende stelling dat weliswaar het 'exceptionalisme een vast onderdeel van de Amerikaanse identiteit,’ is, maar dat tegelijkertijd ‘Washington nog altijd [streeft] naar een wereld waarin individuele vrijheden - fundamentele rechten van de mens - de norm zijn.' Deze bewering is van Ruud van Dijk, docent geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, die in de Volkskrant van 19 december 2015 met grote stelligheid zijn publiek verzekerd dat 'Amerika nog steeds de onmisbare natie' is, en dat ‘[v]oor ons in Europa een constructieve, activistische Amerikaanse rol intussen essentieel’ blijft, en ‘wij’ dus ‘de exceptionele Amerikaanse rol,’ moeten toejuichen aangezien die ertoe heeft geleid dat 'het internationale systeem nog altijd op liberaal-democratische leest geschoeid [is].' Daarentegen schreef de begin 2017 overleden John Berger dat:

People everywhere -- under very different conditions -- are asking themselves: where are we? The question is historical not geographical. What are we living through? Where are we being taken? What have we lost? How to continue without a plausible vision of the future? Why have we lost any view of what is beyond a lifetime? 

The well-heeled experts answer: Globalization. Post-Modernism. Communications Revolution. Economic Liberalism. The terms are tautological and evasive. To the anguished question of Where are we? the experts murmur: Nowhere! 

Might it not be better to see and declare that we are living through the most tyrannical -- because the most pervasive -- chaos that has ever existed? It's not easy to grasp the nature of the tyranny, for its power structure (ranging from the 200 largest multinational corporations to the Pentagon) is interlocking and diffuse, dictatorial yet anonymous, ubiquitous yet placeless. It tyrannizes from offshore -- not only in terms of fiscal law, but in terms of any political control beyond its own. Its aim to delocalize the entire world. It's ideological strategy -- besides which Bin Laden's is a fairy tale -- is to undermine the extent so that everything collapses into its special version of the virtual, from the realm of which -- and this is the tyranny's credo -- there will be a never-ending source of profit.

Dr. Van Dijk’s ‘internationale systeem’ dat ‘nog altijd op liberaal-democratische leest geschoeid’ is, heeft acht mensen zo rijk gemaakt dat zij nu evenveel bezitten als de helft van de hele mensheid tezamen, ongeveer 3,5 miljard mensen, die ieder voor zich van rond de twee dollar per dag moet zien te overleven. Het feit dat hij zijn nonsens onweersproken kan verspreiden, bewijst nog eens hoe dat het academisch niveau in de polder in dit soort gevallen geenszins het simplisme overstijgt van de dagelijkse populistische propaganda. Daarentegen laten Amerikaanse intellectuelen als David Wagner en Jack Dempsey juist zien dat de werkelijkheid veel complexer is. Zij bedrukken dat het ‘exceptionalisme’ van de witte Amerikaan ‘dwaas’ en ‘halsstarrig monomaan’ is, 

in the face of others clearly our human equals; ineptitude (absurditeit. svh) masked with arrogance; morality as a pardon-tale for greed, convenient conformity to both; violent narcissism despite invitations to a more realistic (many-sided) world; the choice of war and massacre rather than negotiation offered by others; the oddly-proud negligence of history, and the use of education to fog and foil fact, intercultural justice, and peace. These are the patterns in this book’s specifics — born of dumping European social problems into ‘empty wilderness’ and then, by way of new ‘nonconformist’ colonies on each frontier, stumbling onto short-term plunders of wealth. The ‘victors’ read each disastrous debauch (smeerlapperij. svh) as a reward for virtue, but each soaks the nervous system in hunger for more at any price. 


Dit alles is de werkelijkheid die achter de propaganda van mainstream-opiniemakers als Bas Heijne, Geert Mak en Ruud van Dijk schuilgaat. Heijne’s ‘in alle opzichten superieure Amerika,’ is het ‘Amerika’ van de bloedbaden en de onverzadigbare begeerte. Mak’s ‘Amerika’ als ‘decennialange ordebewaker en politie-agent’ is het ‘Amerika’ van de genocidale oorlogen tegen ‘Indiaanse volkeren’ en de terreur van Abu Ghraib en Guantanamo Bay. Van Dijk’s ‘Amerika’ als ‘de onmisbare natie,’ is het ‘Amerika’ van het ‘gewelddadig narcisme’ waarop het ‘exceptionalisme,’ en daarmee het meedogenloze ‘expansionisme,’ al eeuwenlang rust. Wagner en Dempsey hebben gelijk wanneer zij tegen het einde van hun boek de lezer waarschuwen dat die weg 

leads only down. The colonies hurt other peoples for ‘advantage’ (the root-word of  ‘profit’), rather than cooperate as mere equals; and when the fathers hear from the peoples hurt, they want to hurt them again, for by God, they’re not adapting. ‘This works — at least insofar as all Others fall silent, one way or another.’ 

Maar ‘alle Anderen’ zwijgen niet meer na vijf eeuwen westerse hegemonie. Zij laten zich niet meer intimideren, ze staan met de rug tegen de muur en hebben niets te verliezen. Op dat moment heeft de winnaar verloren, omdat hij niets meer heeft om ‘alle Anderen’ af te schrikken, zo waarschuwde mij in 1990 de Joods-Israelische generaal b.d., professor Yehoshafat Harkabi, auteur van het boek Israël’s Fateful Decisions (1988). Als voormalig hoofd van de Israëlische Militaire Inlichtingen Dienst schreef hij met betrekking tot de macht van ‘het uitverkoren volk’ in het ‘beloofde land’:

Niet alleen heeft de politiek van een bepaalde groep leiders Israël een pijnlijke erfenis nagelaten, maar achter de fiasco’s waaraan ze zich schuldig hebben gemaakt, gaat een gevaarlijk en bedrieglijk wereldbeeld schuil… Internationale betrekkingen in de moderne betekenis berusten op de opvatting van gelijkwaardigheid tussen de verschillende politieke entiteiten. Deze opvatting van gelijkheid is het judaïsme vreemd. Het Joodse denken verdeelt de wereld in tweeën: het Joodse volk versus de niet-Joden… Het zich bewust zijn van de valkuilen van etnocentrisch denken is belangrijk voor een volk als dat van de Joden, wier zelfbeeld maar al te snel hun visie op de betrekkingen tussen henzelf en de rest van de wereld vervormt… Geen enkele factor bedreigt Israëls toekomst zozeer als de overtuiging van het eigen gelijk… Naar mijn mening vormt de eigendunk een groter gevaar voor Israël dan het antisemitisme… Zelfkritiek is noodzakelijk om… de overtuiging van het eigen gelijk te neutraliseren, een overtuiging die voorkomt uit een fundamentele joodse houding.’ 

Wijlen Yehoshafat Harkabi onderstreepte nog eens de hovaardij van het Joods messianisme. Als hoogleraar geschiedenis en internationale betrekkingen, die aan de Hebreeuwse Universiteit in Jeruzalem en aan de prestigieuze Princeton University in de Verenigde Staten doceerde, waarschuwde hij in zijn boek dat 

de crisis waar de natie voor staat allesomvattend [zal] zijn. Het zal bitter zijn omdat velen zullen moeten toegeven dat zij in een fantasiewereld hebben geleefd. Wanneer Joden zichzelf als superieur zien aan alle andere mensen, dan claimen ze in feite het recht om te doen wat anderen verboden is. De overtuiging boven de wet te staan, is altijd de bron geweest van immoraliteit en slechtheid. Zij vernietigt het vermogen tot zelfkritiek en is een grotere bedreiging dan wat dan ook. Vergeet niet: zelfkritiek is het tegenovergestelde van infantiel narcisme. Een heel land dat aan deze stoornis lijdt, is een ramp voor de internationale gemeenschap. De internationale arena is namelijk een systeem van geven en nemen, van rekening houden met elkaar. Wie dat negeert, lijdt aan egocentrisme, of in het geval van groepen, etnocentrisme. Dat laatste is de drijfveer achter het politieke beleid in Israël, het is een soort nationaal autisme.

Zodra de macht van oordeel is dat zij zich niet hoeft aan te passen aan de voortdurend veranderende werkelijkheid luidt dit autisme het begin van haar einde in. De evolutie wordt niet gedicteerd door het recht van de sterkste, maar door het vermogen zich aan te passen. De status-quo is beperkt houdbaar. Alles stroomt, is in beweging. Uiteindelijk kwam elk imperium in de geschiedenis ten val door, ironisch genoeg, de barbaren van binnen uit. In 1879 probeerde Chief Joseph, opperhoofd van de Nez Perce de witte man te waarschuwen dat ‘The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.’ Zijn beroep op een logisch mens- en wereldbeeld was vergeefs. Nadat hij en zijn volk in de vrieskou van de staten Oregon, Washington, Idaho, en Wyoming ruim 1900 kilometers was vervolgd door het Amerikaanse leger, en tenslotte in Montana gevangen werden genomen, verklaarde Chief Joseph tegenover generaal Oliver O. Howard:

We are all sprung from a woman, although we are unlike in many things. We cannot be made over again. You are as you were made, and as you were made you can remain. We are just as we were made by the Great Spirit, and you cannot change us. Then why should children of one mother and one father quarrel? Why should one try to cheat the other? I do not believe that the Great Spirit Chief gave one kind of men the right to tell another kind of men what they must do. 

General Howard replied, ‘You deny my authority, do you? You want to dictate to me, do you?’ 

Then one of my chiefs — Too-hool-hool-suit — rose in the council and said to General Howard, ‘The great Spirit Chief made the world as it is, and as He wanted it, and He made a part of it for us to live upon. I do not see where you get authority to say that we shall not live where He placed us.’

General Howard lost his temper and said, ‘Shut up! I don't want to hear any more of such talk. The law says you shall go upon the reservation to live, and I want you to do so. But you persist in disobeying the law. If you do not move, I will take the matter into my own hand and make you suffer for your disobedience.’

Too-hool-hooi-suit answered, ‘Who are you, that you should ask us to talk, and then tell me 1 shan't talk? Are you the Great Spirit? Did you make the world? Did you make the sun? Did you make the rivers to run for us to drink? Did you make all these things, that you talk to us as though we were boys? If you did, then you have the right to talk as you do. 

General Howard replied, ‘You are an impudent fellow, and 1 will put you in the guard house,’ and then ordered a soldier to arrest him. 

Too-hool-hool-suit made no resistance. He asked General Howard, ‘Is that your order? I don't care. I have expressed my heart to you. I have nothing to take back. I have spoken for my country. You can arrest me, but you cannot change me or make me take back what I have said.’

Terugkijkend op zijn leven zei Chief Joseph, die door de beroemde fotograaf Edward Curtis werd betiteld als ‘one of greatest men who ever lived’:

I have asked some of the great white chiefs where they get their authority to say to the Indian that he shall stay in one place, while he sees white men going where they please. They cannot tell me… When the white man treats an Indian as they treat each other, then we will have no more wars. We shall all be alike — brothers of one father and one mother, with one sky above us and one government for all. 

Chief Joseph stierf in 1904, in gevangenschap, op een reservaat. De arts die hem als patient had in de laatste 14 jaar van zijn leven, dr. E.H. Latham, gaf als doodsoorzaak op: ‘Chief Joseph died of a broken heart.’ 

In dit korte relaas over Chief Joseph en zijn volk zitten alle elementen van de wijze waarop de Amerikaanse hegemonie nog steeds elders in de wereld door Washington en Wall Street wordt afgedwongen. De kern van het verhaal is het irrationele geweld van ‘If you do not move, I will… make you suffer for your disobedience’ versus het rationale humanisme van ‘Why should one try to cheat the other?’ De essentie van het Europese en Amerikaanse optreden in de wereld is de meedogenloze realpolitik in de afgelopen vijf eeuwen die de witte man zo machtig en rijk heeft gemaakt. Even gruwelijk was de verkrachting van de cultuur van de witte man zelf, want zoals de zwarte dichter en essayist Aimé Césaire samenvatte in zijn fameuze, ook in het Engels vertaalde Discours sur le colonialisme (1950),

For my part, if I have recalled a few details of these hideous butcheries, it is by no means because I take a morbid delight in them, but because I think that these heads of men, these collections of ears, these burned houses, these Gothic invasions, this steaming blood, these cities that evaporate at the edge of the sword, are not to be so easily disposed of. They prove that colonization, I repeat, dehumanizes even the most civilized man; that colonial activity, colonial enterprise, colonial conquest, which is based on contempt for the native and justified by that contempt, inevitably tends to change him who undertakes it; that the colonizer, who in order to ease his conscience gets into the habit of seeing the other man as an animal, accustoms himself to treating him like an animal, and tends objectively to transform himself into an animal… if I turn my attention from man to nations, I note that here too there is great danger; that colonial enterprise is to the modern world what Roman imperialism was to the ancient world: the prelude to Disaster and the forerunner of Catastrophe. Come, now! The Indians massacred, the Moslem world drained of itself, the Chinese world defiled and perverted for a good century; the Negro world disqualified; mighty voices stilled forever; homes scattered to the wind; all this wreckage, all this waste, humanity reduced to a monologue, and you think that all that does not have its price? The truth is that this policy cannot but bring about the ruin of Europe itself, and that Europe, if it is not careful, will perish from the void it has created around itself.

They thought they were only slaughtering Indians, or Hindus, or South Sea islanders, or Africans. They have in fact overthrown, one after another, the ramparts behind which European civilization could have developed freely.

I know how fallacious historical parallels are, particularly the one I am about to draw. Nevertheless, permit me to quote a page from Edgar Quinet for the not inconsiderable element of truth which it contains and which is worth pondering. Here it is:

‘People ask why barbarism emerged all at once in ancient civilization. I believe I know the answer. It is surprising that so simple a cause is not obvious to everyone. The system of ancient civilization was composed of a certain number of nationalities, of countries which, although they seemed to be enemies, or were even ignorant of each other, protected, supported, and guarded one another. When the expanding Roman Empire undertook to conquer and destroy these groups of nations, the dazzled sophists thought they saw at the end of this road humanity triumphant in Rome. They talked about the unity of the human spirit; it was only a dream. It happened that these nationalities were so many bulwarks protecting Rome itself... Thus when Rome, in its alleged triumphal march toward a single civilization, had destroyed, one after the other, Carthage, Egypt, Greece, Judea, Persia, Dacia, and Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul, it came to pass that it had itself swallowed up the dikes that protected it against the human ocean under which it was to perish. The magnanimous Caesar, by crushing the two Gauls, only paved the way for the Teutons. So many societies, so many languages extinguished, so many cities, rights, homes annihilated, created a void around Rome, and in those places which were not invaded by the barbarians, barbarism was born spontaneously. The vanquished Gauls changed into Bagaudes. Thus the violent downfall, the progressive extirpation of individual cities, caused the crumbling of ancient civilization. That social edifice was supported by the various nationalities as by so many different columns of marble or porphyry. When, to the applause of the wise men of the time, each of these living columns had been demolished, the edifice came crashing down; and the wise men of our day are still trying to understand how such mighty ruins could have been made in a moment's time.’

And now I ask: what else has bourgeois Europe done? It has undermined civilizations, destroyed countries, ruined nationalities, extirpated "the root of diversity." No more dikes, no more bulwarks. The hour of the barbarian is at hand. The modern barbarian. The American hour. Violence, excess, waste, mercantilism, bluff, gregariousness, stupidity, vulgarity, disorder. In 1913, Ambassador Page wrote to Wilson:

‘The future of the world belongs to us… Now what are we going to do with the leadership of the world presently when it clearly falls into our hands?’

And in 1914: ‘What are we going to do with this England and this Empire, presently, when economic forces unmistakably put the leadership of the race in our hands?’

This Empire... And the others…

And indeed, do you not see how ostentatiously these gentlemen have just unfurled the banner of anti-colonialism?

‘Aid to the disinherited countries,’ says Truman. ‘The time of the old colonialism has passed.’ That's also Truman.

Which means that American high finance considers that the time has come to raid every colony in the world. So, dear friends, here you have to be careful!

I know that some of you, disgusted with Europe, with all that hideous mess which you did not witness by choice, are turning - oh! in no great numbers - toward America and getting used to looking upon that country as a possible liberator.
‘What a godsend’ you think.
‘The bulldozers! The massive investments of capital! The roads! The ports!’
‘But American racism!’
‘So what? European racism in the colonies has inured us to it!’
And there we are, ready to run the great Yankee risk.
So, once again, be careful!

American domination — the only domination from which one never recovers. I mean
from which one never recovers unscarred.

And since you are talking about factories and industries, do you not see the tremendous factory hysterically spitting out its cinders in the heart of our forests or deep in the bush, the factory for the production of lackeys; do you not see the prodigious mechanization, the mechanization of man; the gigantic rape of everything intimate, undamaged, undefiled that, despoiled as we are, our human spirit has still managed to preserve; the machine, yes, have you never seen it, the machine for crushing, for grinding, for degrading peoples?
So that the danger is immense.

Deze waarschuwing van een zwarte auteur, geboren op het eiland Martinique, een overzees Frans departement in de Caribische Zee, dateert uit 1950 en kan vandaag de dag niet anders dan als visionair worden beschouwd. Césaire’s inzicht demonstreert niet alleen hoe doortrapt Bas Heijne’s kwalificatie is dat de VS ‘in alle opzichten superieur’ blijft, maar tevens hoe infantiel Geert Mak’s bewering is dat het ‘Amerikaanse presidenten,’ waren, ‘die een begin van orde brachten in de mondiale politiek en economie,’ en hoe absurd Ruud van Dijk’s stelling is dat ‘de exceptionele Amerikaanse rol,’ ertoe heeft geleid dat 'het internationale systeem nog altijd op liberaal-democratische leest geschoeid [is].’ En dit soort levensgevaarlijke nonsens wordt bij gebrek aan een ware intelligentsia in Nederland onweersproken door de mainstream-media voortdurend verspreid. Daarentegen schreef de naar een groot cultuurland uitgeweken Nederlandse filosoof Ton Lemaire in zijn boek De Indiaan in ons bewustzijn. De ontmoeting van de Oude met de Nieuwe Wereld (1986) over de beroemde Franse antropoloog en etnoloog Claude Lévi-Strauss:

Lévi-Strauss’ meest complete werk, Tristes Tropiques (1955), is symbolisch genoeg het reisverslag van een antropoloog die in de Nieuwe Wereld de kritische afstand vindt om de mensheid als geheel en de Oude Wereld in het bijzonder te kunnen beschouwen.

Maar dan nog beseft Lévi-Strauss dat hij de Indianen in Brazilië nooit zal zien zoals de eerste witte Europeanen hen hebben gezien. Lemaire:

De Indiaanse culturen die nu nog zijn te onderzoeken zijn ‘verminkte vormen’; ‘zij zijn verpletterd door die monsterlijke en onbegrijpelijke zondvloed die, voor een zo groot en onschuldig deel van de mensheid, de ontwikkeling van de westerse civilisatie is geweest.’ Het ontwaken van het etnografisch bewustzijn sinds en dankzij de ontdekking van Amerika valt samen met de vernietiging van de Nieuwe Wereld. Lévi-Strauss bezit het ongelukkige bewustzijn van de etnograaf die beseft dat de kenbaarheid van de Ander — de Indiaan — intrinsiek samenhangt met zijn vernietiging.

Dit besef maakt duidelijk hoe vernietigend propagandistische kwalificaties als ‘superieur’ en ‘orde’ en ‘exceptioneel’ zijn. Het demonstreert hoe hol de bewering is van de academicus dr. Ruud van Dijk dat ‘Washington nog altijd [streeft] naar een wereld waarin individuele vrijheden - fundamentele rechten van de mens - de norm zijn.’ Staande op het graf van al die andere culturen heeft deze  docent van de Universiteit van Amsterdam geen enkele moeite om, als academisch geschoold lid van het establisment, zichzelf eens flink op de borst te slaan. Ton Lemaire:

De reis naar het binnenste van Amerika die Lévi-Strauss beschrijft, is symbolisch voor de oriëntatie van zijn antropologie: het gaat er eigenlijk om aan de vernietigende invloed van de geschiedenis te ontsnappen en om wijzen van mens-zijn te vinden die weerstand hebben weten te bieden aan die geschiedenis. Lévi-Strauss prijst de Indianen dat ze de vooruitgang geweigerd hebben die het Westen hen heeft opgedrongen. Hij besluit zijn inaugurale rede met een dankwoord aan deze Indianen, ‘wier duistere vasthoudendheid ons nog het middel biedt oma aan de feiten omtrent de mens hun ware dimensies toe te kennen.’ Als antropoloog wil hij slechts hun leerling en getuige zijn, want in het ‘arme weten’ dat zij hem hebben geleerd, is toch het essentiële gelegen dat hij aan anderen moet doorgeven. Het is de taak van de antropoloog om te getuigen van de permanente mogelijkheden van de mens van de oorspronkelijke rijkdom en verscheidenheid van culturen die nog niet helemaal genivelleerd zijn door de inbreuk van onze beschaving, maar hij kan die waakzaamheid alleen betrachten dankzij mensen die in enkele uithoeken van de wereld ‘koppig weerstand hebben geboden aan de geschiedenis.’ 

Het probleem van de witte man en zijn consumptiemaatschappij is dat hij zich heeft vervreemd van de natuur, de medemens en van zichzelf, en nu geconfronteerd wordt met de desastreuze gevolgen daarvan, zoals de klimaatverandering, de uitputting van grondstoffen, de voortdurende oorlogen, het geleidelijke verlies van zijn hegemonie in de wereld, de crisis in zijn cultuur. Ton Lemaire benadrukt in dit verband dat
