44 minuten geleden Gaza's Ministry of Health released a document this week, containing the names and ages of Palestinians killed by Israel's assault since October 7, an incomplete list that nonetheless runs 649 pages—the first 14 of which are filled with the names of babies.
The current death toll, according to the ministry, is close to 42,000, but experts believe that figure is likely a gross undercount.
In recent conflicts, indirect deaths range from 3 to 15 times the number of direct deaths.
Applying a conservative estimate of 4 indirect deaths per 1 direct death to the 37,396 deaths reported in July, The Lancet (peer reviewed academic medical journal) predicted that it is not implausible to estimate that up to 186,000 or even more deaths could be attributable to Israel’s onslaught in Gaza.
However, applying the ratio at the highest end of 1:15, the death toll could potentially reach as high as 600,000.
Using the 2022 Gaza population estimate of 2,375 259, this would translate to 7·9% of the total population in Gaza.
To put 7.9% into context, that would be the same as:

The new document is a testament to the devastating impact Israel's, U.S.- Europe backed onslaught has had on Gaza's population, particularly children.
According to Gaza officials, children make up a third of those killed since October 7.
"This is a genocide of children. 14 pages of babies. Babies," Heba Gowayed, a sociology professor at the City University of New York's Hunter College, wrote on social media in response to the list.
