Het Neoliberalisme

In de laatste nieuwsbrief van de Belgische Liberales, een nieuwe onafhankelijke denktank binnen de liberale beweging, staat een bespreking van David Harvey's boek 'A brief history of neoliberalism,' verschenen bij Oxford University Press. In een recensie schrijft Dick Verhofstadt: 'Dat neoliberalen ver af staan van het liberalisme demonstreert David Harvey met de actuele politiek van president Bush. Die pleit voor de vrije markt en de vrijhandel maar steunt tegelijk protectionistische maatregelen zoals staalheffingen en subsidies voor landbouw en textiel. Om de eigen markt af te schermen legt hij barrières op aan vreemde invoerders. Hij laat monopolies en oligopolies toe die de markt ontwrichten en de consument overleveren aan prijsafspraken en een gebrek aan keuzemogelijkheden. De notie vrijheid wordt aldus verengd tot een louter economisch gegeven. George W. Bush beloofde – zoals Reagan in de jaren tachtig – de overheidsuitgaven te zullen verminderen, maar in de praktijk gebeurt net het tegenovergestelde. Op militair vlak voert hij een vorm van ‘military Keynesianism’, een reusachtige toename van de defensieuitgaven waardoor het overheidsdeficiet toeneemt. Om dit te compenseren snijdt hij fors in investeringen in het onderwijs, in de sociale bescherming en in noodzakelijke infrastructuur. Dit kwam in september nog aan het licht met de desastreuze gevolgen van de orkaan Katrina, waaruit bleek dat de overheid fors had gesnoeid in de noodzakelijke investeringsbudgetten voor de versterking van de dijken rond de stad New Orleans. Ook in China leidde de neoliberale revolutie niet tot vrijheid en democratie. De levensstandaard voor heel wat mensen steeg inderdaad, maar tegelijk werden politieke hervormingen gecounterd, met als dramatisch hoogtepunt de bloedige onderdrukking van de studentenopstand in 1989 op het Tienanmenplein waarbij tal van slachtoffers vielen. De enorme opmars van China als economische macht doet vergeten dat nog steeds miljoenen mensen er in armoede en onvrijheid leven. De lonen blijven er extreem laag, de bescherming van de arbeiders is er onbestaande en van politiek liberalisme is er nog steeds geen sprake.' Lees verder:

Corruptie in Washington 6

Terwijl Irakese burgers en Amerikaanse soldaten sterven, worden senatoren door grote concerns gekocht. USA Today bericht: 'One day after a New York investment group raised $110,000 for Republican Rep. Jerry Lewis, the House passed a defense spending bill that preserved $160 million for a Navy project critical to the firm. The man who protected the Navy money? Lewis. The fundraiser, which took place July 7, 2003, and the subsequent vote illustrate the kind of relationship between congressman and contributor that's under increased scrutiny in the nation's capital.
A fellow California Republican, Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, resigned in November after admitting he helped steer Pentagon contracts to two of four businessmen who paid him more than $2.4 million in bribes. Former top GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff pleaded guilty last month to using gifts and political donations in a conspiracy to bribe public officials. Both investigations continue. Nothing is illegal about government contractors giving political money to lawmakers who help them, unless both sides agree to exchange campaign donations for votes. Lewis, 71, insists he did nothing improper. "I'm darn sensitive to make certain we keep arm's length from certain efforts" by political donors to influence legislation, Lewis said. Both Lewis and the investment company, Cerberus Capital Management, benefited from the relationship. Eighteen months after the fundraiser and the House vote, Lewis won the chairmanship of the Appropriations Committee. He acknowledges that the fundraising efforts of Cerberus "played a very significant role" in winning the post. The ties between Cerberus and Lewis, a 14-term congressman from Redlands, Calif., have not been publicly examined before.' Lees verder

Nieuws van het milieu front. Vandaag ontving ik via email de eerste nieuwsbrief van 'Anders Wonen Anders Leven. Een uitgave van het Servicepunt Anders Wonen Anders Leven, een initiatief van Omslag Werkplaats voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling. Nummer 1 - Januari 2006. Deze nieuwsbrief bevat nieuwsflitsen over een mix van onderwerpen rond 'anders' bouwen, wonen en leven. Vanuit de link(s) in het bericht kunt u eenvoudig doorklikken naar verdere informatie... De nieuwsbrief Anders Wonen Anders Leven is informatief en inspirerend voor mensen en organisaties met belangstelling voor collectief en ecologisch wonen en leven. Gemeenschapsvorming, zelfbeheer, autonomie en sociale duurzaamheid zijn andere belangrijke uitgangspunten. De informatie betreft projecten en initiatieven verspreid over heel Nederland, soms ook daarbuiten. Het failliete Amerika 5

Na achttien jaar de voorzitter te zijn geweest van de 'Federal Reserve' gaat Alan Greenspan volgende week met pensioen, een failliet land achterlatend. Niet alleen de staat die nu de grootste buitenlandse schuld ter wereld heeft, maar ook de burgers, die alleen door leningen het hoofd boven water weten te houden. Net zoalang tot het systeem van lenen onvermijdelijk ineenstort. Alles en iedereen leeft er op de pof. Het is daarom ook interessant het portret te lezen dat de Washington Post van Greenspan schetste. Enkele citaten: 'U.S. household debt hit a record $11.4 trillion in last year's third quarter, which ended Sept. 30, after shooting up at the fastest rate since 1985, according to Fed data. · U.S. households spent a record 13.75 percent of their after-tax, or disposable, income on servicing their debts in the third quarter, the Fed reported. · The trade deficit for last year is estimated to have swollen to another record high, above $700 billion, increasing America's indebtedness to foreigners…The Fed chairman told Congress in June: "I think we've learned very early on in economic history that debt in modest quantities does enhance the rate of growth of an economy and does create higher standards of living, but in excess, creates very serious problems." Greenspan didn't define "excess," but economists see troubling possibilities: A sudden reversal in housing prices could trigger a recession if consumers cut back on spending and households have trouble paying their mortgages. The trade gap could swell to a point that forces a sharp fall in the dollar and surge in interest rates, also causing a recession…But low interest rates worked like an intoxicant on consumers, who snapped up new cars and trucks with no-interest loans and seized on low mortgage rates to buy new homes and refinance old home loans. Those sales and refinancings freed up more cash to spend. Households used much of that extra money to pay off credit cards, student loans and other, higher-interest rate debt -- "cleaning up their balance sheets," in economists' terms. They also kept shopping through the recession, the terrorist attacks and the rocky economic recovery that followed… Mortgage rates also fell, prompting homeowners to refinance repeatedly. Changes in the financial industry made it easier for homeowners to tap their home equity through refinancing. Lenders provided adjustable-rate mortgages that enabled home buyers to pay higher prices while temporarily making low monthly loan payments. The housing market kept booming. Consumer debt and spending kept climbing... And home values have skyrocketed, pumping up household wealth to a record $51 trillion in the third quarter, according to Fed data. But household debt rose faster in recent years than wealth or disposable income, reaching an unprecedented 126.1 percent of after-tax income in the third quarter, double its 1980 level… Indeed, U.S. households collectively spent more than their combined income in the second and third quarters of last year. The only way to do that is by selling assets, dipping into savings or borrowing.' War is Terrorism

Op 10 december 2005 zei Mohamed ElBaradei, directeur-generaal van het International Atomic Energy Agency, in de toespraak die hij hield toen hij de Nobelprijs voor de Vrede ontving: 'A recent United Nations High-Level Panel identified five categories of threats that we face: 1. Poverty, Infectious Disease, and Environmental Degradation;2. Armed Conflict – both within and among states;3. Organized Crime;4. Terrorism; and5. Weapons of Mass Destruction. These are all 'threats without borders' – where traditional notions of national security have become obsolete. We cannot respond to these threats by building more walls, developing bigger weapons, or dispatching more troops. Quite to the contrary. By their very nature, these security threats require primarily multinational cooperation. But what is more important is that these are not separate or distinct threats. Nederland en Afghanistan 28

Voordat de Nederlandse regering nog meer militairen naar Afghanistan gaat sturen is het belangrijk dat onze volksvertegenwoordigers zich eerst eens verdiepen in het massale gebruik van verarmd uranium door de Amerikanen in zowel Irak als Afghanistan en de consequenties daarvan op de gezondheid van de soldaten. De San Francisco Bay View bericht: 'Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter charged Monday that the reason Veterans Affairs Secretary Anthony Principi stepped down earlier this month was the growing scandal surrounding the use of uranium munitions in the Iraq War. Writing in Preventive Psychiatry E-Newsletter No. 169, Arthur N. Bernklau, executive director of Veterans for Constitutional Law in New York, stated, “The real reason for Mr. Principi’s departure was really never given, however a special report published by eminent scientist Leuren Moret naming depleted uranium as the definitive cause of the ‘Gulf War Syndrome’ has fed a growing scandal about the continued use of uranium munitions by the US Military.” Bernklau continued, “This malady (from uranium munitions), that thousands of our military have suffered and died from, has finally been identified as the cause of this sickness, eliminating the guessing. The terrible truth is now being revealed.”
He added, “Out of the 580,400 soldiers who served in GW1 (the first Gulf War), of them, 11,000 are now dead! By the year 2000, there were 325,000 on Permanent Medical Disability. This astounding number of ‘Disabled Vets’ means that a decade later, 56% of those soldiers who served have some form of permanent medical problems!” The disability rate for the wars of the last century was 5 percent; it was higher, 10 percent, in Viet Nam.'
