1 opmerking:
While watching this video I felt the factor oil/gas (or resources in general) driving wars , was totally ignored by McGregor.
In the last 10 seconds of the video that feeling is confirmed , when he says : "there is always that aspect to war" ( the aspect of resources being a driver of conflict). That is grossly understated I would say , because it's not AN aspect , it is THE main aspect.
Instead he focusses on the aspect of war of different peoples of Europe "sorting things out between themselves" , and that the U.S. shouldn't bother to get involved in that. He doesn't really specify any further what the "sorting out" might be.
In reality , the U.S. has always used the pretext of "sorting things out" or "democratise" or "human rights" or "removing evil dictators" , precisely to get involved in a specific geografic area , as to try to exert control of the flow of resources in some way.
And that interest has been publicly made clear by the U.S. in various official documents , so they are not hiding that. So why does McGregor beat around the bush?
Anyway , I am liking typing and formulating thoughts a lot lately.
Although I generally appreciate McGregor , this particular video is adressed to Americans. One might even say , that he's misguiding young guys that are maybe thinking of a career in the military , by still framing the wars as a means to "put things right" somewhere overseas. He should tell them it's about resources , not about higher moral causes than that.
So , to wrap it up : this conversation is a bit to cosy for me
