Tehran vows to respond ‘in kind’ to any US attacks on its infrastructure

We can now bring you more remarks from Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei, who gave an interview earlier responding to Trump’s latest threats against his country.

“Our armed forces have made it clear that in case Iran’s infrastructure is attacked, we would react in kind,” he said.

“Our armed forces would target any similar infrastructure that is owned or in any way or manner related to the United States or contributes to their act of aggression against Iran.”

Israeli army chief says ‘operational zone’ created south of Lebanon’s Litani River

Eyal Zamir says the Israeli army has turned all areas south of Lebanon’s Litani River – where it is carrying out a deepening ground invasion – into an “operational zone” to fight Hezbollah.

According to a statement by the military, the Israeli army chief met with troops positioned in southern Lebanon’s Ras al-Bayada area earlier today.

Zamir said Israeli forces are working to “suppress and reduce high-trajectory fire from Lebanon,” which will “take time”, the statement said.

More than 1.1 million people have been forcibly displaced across Lebanon amid Israel’s intensified attacks on the country and ground invasion in the south.

Human rights groups and UN officials have raised concerns that Israel is destroying civilian infrastructure in violation of international law and preparing for a protracted occupation of southern Lebanese territory.

Trump’s shifting Strait of Hormuz deadlines

Trump has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran’s infrastructure if it does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, issuing a series of ultimatums with different deadlines over the past few weeks.

Here’s a quick look at some of the deadlines the US president has set publicly:

    • March 21: Trump issues 48-hour ultimatum for Iran to open Strait of Hormuz or face US attacks on power plants
    • March 23: Trump postpones his deadline for five days, citing progress in purported negotiations with Tehran
    • March 26: Trump issues new 10-day deadline, set to expire at 8pm on April 6 (00:00 GMT on April 7)
    • April 4: Trump says Iran has 48 hours to make a deal, reiterating the April 6 deadline
    • April 5: Trump appears to push the deadline back another day to the evening of April 7, telling the Wall Street Journal that Iran “won’t have any power plants … [or] bridges standing” if its leaders “don’t do something” by then.
    • Later on April 5: Trump delivers what it appears to be a new precise deadline, writing on social media: “Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!” – or 00:00 GMT on Wednesday, April 8.
