US-Israel war on Iran could lead to stagflation for EU: European economic commissioner

The European Union economy is at risk of stagflation due to the surge in energy prices caused by the US-Israel war on Iran, European Economic Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis has said.

“The outlook is clouded by profound uncertainty, but it is clear that we are at the risk of a stagflationary shock, that is to say, a situation where a slower growth coincides with a higher inflation,” Dombrovskis told a news conference after a meeting of EU finance ministers on the energy price surge.

“This is the case even if the disruptions in energy supplies were to be relatively short-lived. In such a scenario, our analysis suggests that the EU growth in 2026 could be around 0.4 percentage points lower than projected in our autumn economic forecast, and inflation could be up to one percentage point higher,” he said.

“If disruptions prove more substantial and longer lasting, the negative consequences for growth would be even greater. Growth could be up to 0.6 percentage points lower in both 2026 and 2027,” Dombrovskis added.

Iranian men’s football team pays tribute to victims of girls’ school attack

Iran’s men’s national football team wore black armbands and held schoolbags as their anthem played ahead of a match in Turkiye in what a team official said was a protest over the killing of schoolgirls on the first day of the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Iran was playing a friendly against Nigeria in the resort town of Belek ahead of the World Cup in the US, Mexico and Canada, where their participation is in doubt over the conflict.

The men lined up holding pink and purple bags with ribbons on them – a reference to the attack on the Shajareh Tayyebeh School, which killed more than 175 people, including children and teachers, on the first day of joint US-Israeli strikes.

“The players are holding the school bags close to their heart in remembrance of the 165 girls the Americans killed in an Iranian school,” a media official for the Iranian team told Reuters.

The attack on the school is believed, by the US’s own military investigators, to have been carried out by the US.

Where can people in southern Lebanon go after Israel’s invasion?

    By Obaida Hitto

    Reporting from Tyre, Lebanon

Evacuation orders are being issued on social media by Israeli forces, an added challenge for Lebanese people who don’t necessarily have immediate access to the internet or social media. In some cases, very quickly after these orders are issued, strikes happen on these exact locations. These orders are also happening in areas previously thought to be safe.

But where can people go? It’s not clear. There are over a million people displaced inside Lebanon.

There are still civilians here, so if they decide that it’s no longer safe for them to stay, it’s going to be very difficult for them to cross over the Litani River and go north, because the bridges that connect the north and south of the country have been damaged or destroyed. So this is putting the government in Beirut in a very difficult situation, to try and respond to the humanitarian crisis that’s quickly growing here in the south of the country.

Israeli forces have actually entered from [Naqoura, on the Israel-Lebanon border] and so this is already a ground invasion.

There has been an exchange of fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli forces for the last 24 hours, but the Lebanese military continues to take a non-combatant role, focusing on trying to respond to the humanitarian crisis.
