The 2017 Conference Cycle on War in Cities is a series of high-level public events and expert meetings organized by the ICRC in Geneva, abroad and online, bringing together key humanitarian actors and experts.
This years’ theme was chosen in response to the growing urbanization of warfare. Two thirds of the global population is predicted to be living in cities by 2030, and urban centres are struggling to absorb this growth. In parallel, armed conflicts are increasingly fought in urban environments with some 50 million people bearing the brunt of the consequences. These trends have a catastrophic impact on the civilian population and pose serious legal and operational challenges that need to be addressed.
By engaging with key actors, the ICRC aims to strengthen respect for IHL in urban armed conflicts, as well as stimulate research and innovation to better respond to urban needs.
