Frank Westerman's Provinciale Schrijverij 50

The media are agents for the unification of the history of the planet.
Milan Kundera. 1986

George Carlin. Back in Town. 1996: continue to elect these rich cocksuckers who don't give a fuck about you. They don't give a fuck about you — they don't give a fuck about you. They don't care about you at all — at all — at all… That's what the owners count on. The fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white, and blue dick that's being jammed up their assholes everyday, because the owners of this country know the truth. It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it, but say what you want about Americans, folks. You can say what you want about Americans. You can call them smart, dumb, ignorant, innocent, naive, gullible, easily led, whatever you want, you're going to have to deal with them.

Echt? Of gewoon betere politici?

late 2007, Thompson's directorship at the BBC was criticized. Sir Richard Eyre, former artistic director of the National Theatre, accused the BBC under Thompson's leadership of failing to produce programs 'that inspired viewers to visit galleries, museums or theaters.' He was also criticized by Tony Palmer, a multi-award winning filmmaker. Of the BBC, Palmer stated that ‘[it] has a worldwide reputation which it has abrogated and that's shameful. In the end, the buck stops with Mark Thompson. He is a catastrophe.’ […]

A number of commentators have suggested that Thompson has a pro-Israeli editorial stance, particularly since he supported the controversial decision by the BBC not to broadcast the DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee. svh) Gaza appeal in January 2009. Complaints to the BBC about the decision, numbering nearly 16,000, were directed to a statement by Thompson. In May 2011, Thompson ordered the lyrics 'free Palestine' in a rap on BBC 1 Extra to be censored.

Tam Dean Burn wrote in The Herald: ‘I would argue that this bias has moved on apace since Thompson went to Israel in 2005 and signed a deal with prime minister Ariel Sharon on the BBC's coverage of the conflict.’

If there is a case for censorship, it should be debated and decided in parliament. Political censorship cannot be outsourced to the BBC or anyone else.’ Bovendien is het volgende over hem bekend:

In January 2010, Thompson was criticized over his £834,000 salary. The BBC presenter Stephen Sackur told him ‘there are huge numbers of people in the organization who think your salary is plain wrong and corrosive.’

In October 2012, the fertility expert Robert Winston, who presented the BAFTA award-winning series The Human Body, said: ‘I don't think Mark Thompson has led well from the top. It's not just my perception. Many of the scientific community feel very, very uneasy, and the news people clearly do.’ Winston had previously accused Mark Thompson of ‘cowardice’ and a lack of ‘spine’ in its leadership, over a controversial trailer which included misleading footage of the Queen.

Though Thompson departed the BBC before public exposure of the Savile scandal and is not noted in the BBC chronology of the unfolding coverage, Thompson faced questions about his role in the events around Savile's actions and BBC coverage of them. Per a New York Times review, Thompson has denied knowing of a BBC ‘Newsnight’ program on accusations against Sir Jimmy Savile before the program was dropped soon after Savile's death in October, 2011.

On 14 August 2012, he was named CEO of The New York Times Company, effective November 2012.

In the fall of 2016, Thompson published Enough Said: What's Gone Wrong with the Language of Politics? with sales in both the United States and the United Kingdom reportedly disappointing.

In 2009 Thompson was ranked as the 65th most powerful person in the world by Forbes magazine.

Think. Speak. Laugh. Cut through the noise.’

Hannah Arendt was right in stating that ‘the aim of totalitarian education has never been to instill convictions but to destroy the capacity to form any,’ suggesting that totalitarianism was as much about the production of thoughtlessness as it was about the imposition of brute force, gaping inequality, corporatism, and the spectacle of violence. Totalitarianism destroys everything that democracy makes possible, and in doing so thrives by stoking mass insecurity, fear, and rage, all of which are marshalled to demonize the Other — the Immigrant, the Black, the Muslim, the Intellectual, the Youth in Revolt. Yet power, however tyrannical, is never without resistance. The dark clouds of authoritarianism are not ahead, they are upon us, but that does not mean that they are here to stay. America at War with Itself is designed to see through the sand storm that authoritarianism is unleashing, and to point toward alternative pathways offered by critical pedagogy, insurrectional democracy, and international solidarity…

Liberals have denounced Trump but have said woefully little about the history of how both major parties have supported unjustified military invasions, racialized tough-on-crime campaigns, and a mass-incarceration state that has decimated communities of color nationwide…

Adding to the chorus of liberal denunciations were the public announcements by a number of corporations that they were cutting their business ties with Trump because of the offensive nature of his remarks. Commentators praised such corporations for taking the high moral ground but most conveniently forgot that these were the same corporations battling unions, polluting the environment, underpaying their workers, and exercising an economic chokehold over the commanding institutions of American life…

In response to all of this fanfare over Trump's remarks, I argue that the widespread focus given to his displays of racism, narcissism, and arrogance misses the point. The real issue that needs to be examined is what kind of society produces a Donald Trump. Why have Americans flocked to his rallies and roared in support for his bigoted epithets and militant intolerance? Given how the legacies of white colonialism, enslavement, and Jim Crow politics have influenced the nation for generations — influences that scholars like Angela Davis, Michelle Alexander, and Mumia Abu-Jamal relentlessly critique — Trump is just the latest manifestation of a social order that has always been dominated by whites and that has always been deeply racist. Trump exemplifies a no-holds-barred form of intolerance that shares the ideology of hate espoused by armed vigilante groups that bomb Planned Parenthood offices, ambush immigrants on the border, and burn mosques. How else to explain that extremists such as Christian nationalists, the Ku Klux Klan, and white militia groups are flocking to support Trump. The national approval ratings that soar following Donald Trump’s most outrageous statements offer clear testimony to the degree to which forces of intolerance are seething just beneath the glittering corporate surface of a democracy in deep decline. In addition, Trump provides a more direct and arrogant frontman for a society operating increasingly as a plutocracy — a society that glorifies money, excess, and celebrity, and that denigrates kindness, community, justice, and equality.

Trump is the symbol of a new authoritarianism, which is to say, the sign of a democracy unable to protect and sustain itself. Trump represents corporate domination set free, a political and economic engine that both fuels and feeds on fear and intolerance. He is also the endpoint of a longstanding political system that is ‘part bread-and-circuses spectacle, part celebrity obsession, and part media money machine.
_engelhardt,_don't_blame_it_all_on_donald_trump svh).’ Trump is the symbol of a frightened society that is increasingly seduced to choose the swagger of a vigilante strongman over the processes of collective sovereignty, the gun over diplomacy, and the wall instead of the bridge. Trump's public rants and humiliating snipes make for great TV, and are, as Frank Rich once argued, ‘another symptom of a political virus that can't be quarantined and whose cure is as yet unknown.’ What the American public needs is an ongoing analysis of Trump’s messaging in the context of the historical legacies of white bigotry and intolerance, and an analysis of how right-wing politics have tapped such bigotry to further the self-serving interests of a small economic elite. Such an analysis would situate Trump in the context of the historical racism that has smoldered as a form low-intensity warfare in the United States since its inception, and that has arguably worsened for communities of color since the rise of neo-conservatism in the 1980s. Trump has simply discarded the euphemisms and deploys the ruse of national security to take bigotry, sexism, xenophobia, and political bullying to more aggressive levels.

Trump's rise indicates the increasing confluence of religious fundamentalists and economic extremists who insist that social, racial, economic, and environmental justice are wrong, lead to big government, and are malignant to the nation. Chris Hedges captures the authoritarian and militaristic nature of the Christian right:

The cult of masculinity, as in all fascist movements, pervades the ideology of the Christian right. The movement uses religion to sanctify military and heroic ‘virtues,’ glorify blind obedience and order over reason and conscience, and pander to the euphoria of collective emotions. Feminism and homosexuality, believers are told, have rendered the American male physically and spiritually impotent. Jesus, for the Christian right, is a man of action, casting out demons, battling the Antichrist, attacking hypocrites and ultimately slaying nonbelievers. This cult of masculinity, with its glorification of violence, is appealing to the powerless. It stokes the anger of many Americans, mostly white and economically disadvantaged, and encourages them to lash back at those who, they are told, seek to destroy them. The paranoia about the outside world is fostered by bizarre conspiracy theories, many of which are prominent in the rhetoric of those leading the government shutdown. Believers, especially now, are called to a perpetual state of war with the ‘secular humanist’ state. The march, they believe, is irreversible. Global war, even nuclear war, is the joyful harbinger of the Second Coming. And leading the avenging armies is an angry, violent Messiah who dooms billions of apostates to death.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Echt? Of gewoon betere politici?

Daarom, terug naar het inhoudelijke aspect in Giroux’s America at War with Itself:

Trump is just one boisterous voice speaking for a sector of white America that feels threatened by people of color, Muslims, immigrants, and people of conscience who form communities of solidarity and resistance. The end-time religious wars that many in the Republican Party embrace are not much different than those professed by ISIS and other fanatics. It is also the party of political fundamentalists who hate democracy, attack women's rights, destroy or underfund healthcare programs that benefit the poor,  turn back hard-won voting rights, and believe governance is a tool of the financial elite.

Trump is simply the most visible and vocal member of a fractured party made up of frightened Americans, religious fundamentalists, and self-serving economic extremists who believe that the market should arbitrate and dominate all aspects of government and society. Trump represents a new form of social disorder — intolerant, authoritarian, and violent — that sees preventable inequality as part of the natural order of things. Guns, walls, laws, surveillance, prisons, media, and wars are there to serve the interest of the wealthy winners, and to keep the rest of the population in check. Bankers who commit theft, fraud, and acts of economic mass destruction never feel the cold steel of handcuffs tighten on their wrists. Corporate suspects never get shot down accidentally in the streets, as do unarmed Blacks, by white cops who feel threatened by skin color. Trump's rise reinforces these injustices and gives anxious whites a boastful businessin and TV celebrity to rule as their strongman.

More than any other recent politician, Trump speaks to the existential fears and anger of many Americans who have every right to be distressed over their lives and their futures. These are people who live on the edge of financial ruin, people who have few resources for retirement, who are either unemployed or work in dead-end jobs. Not all in Trump's base are racist. Many of them are fed up and angry over establishment political parties whose allegiance is to the rich, not to them, and it shows in the increasing anxiety and despair of middle-aged white Americans who are dying early, and who ‘are committing suicide with guns, drugs and alcohol at shocking levels.’ Trump has tapped into this anger by exposing the class-specific fault lines that dominate the Republican Party while directing it into a discourse of hate, fear-mongering, xenophobia, racism, and violence.

Roughly 20 veterans a day commit suicide nationwide, according to new data from the Department of Veterans Affairs — a figure that dispels the often quoted, but problematic,  ’22 a day’ estimate yet solidifies the disturbing mental health crisis the number implied.

In 2014, the latest year available, more than 7,400 veterans took their own lives, accounting for 18 percent of all suicides in America. Veterans make up less than 9 percent of the U.S. population.

Intussen woedt in de hele Verenigde Staten al enige tijd een heroïne-epidemie, waarover The New York Times van vrijdag 6 januari 2017, onder de kop ‘Inside a Killer Drug Epidemic: A Look at America’s Opioid Crisis,' het volgende berichtte:

The opioid epidemic killed more than 33,000 people in 2015. What follows are stories of a national affliction that has swept the country, from cities on the West Coast to bedroom communities in the Northeast.

Opioid addiction is America’s 50-state epidemic. It courses along Interstate highways in the form of cheap smuggled heroin, and flows out of ‘pill mill’ clinics where pain medicine is handed out like candy. It has ripped through New England towns, where people overdose in the aisles of dollar stores, and it has ravaged coal country, where addicts speed-dial the sole doctor in town licensed to prescribe a medication.

Public health officials have called the current opioid epidemic the worst drug crisis in American history, killing more than 33,000 people in 2015. Overdose deaths were nearly equal to the number of deaths from car crashes. In 2015, for the first time, deaths from heroin alone surpassed gun homicides.

And there’s no sign it’s letting up, a team of New York Times reporters found as they examined the epidemic on the ground in states across the country. From New England to ‘safe injection’ areas in the Pacific Northwest, communities are searching for a way out of a problem that can feel inescapable.

Dinsdag 3 november 2015 meldde The Washington Post onder de kop ‘Nearly 60 percent of Americans — the highest ever — are taking prescription drugs’  dat

‘Nearly 3 in 5 American adults take a prescription drug, up markedly since 2000 because of much higher use of almost every type of medication, including antidepressants and treatments for high cholesterol and diabetes.’

In a study published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that the prevalence of prescription drug use among people 20 and older had risen to 59 percent in 2012 from 51 percent just a dozen years earlier. During the same period, the percentage of people taking five or more prescription drugs nearly doubled, to 15 percent from 8 percent.

One likely factor driving the increased use: obesity.

Researchers noted that eight of the 10 most commonly used drugs in the United States are for hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and other elements of the ‘cardiometabolic syndrome.’ In addition, another frequently prescribed drug treats gastroesophageal reflux, a widespread condition among the overweight or obese.

Why do drug companies charge so much? Because they can.

US pre-eminence, thwarting rival powers and shaping the global security system according to US interests.’ Vastbesloten een Amerikaans wereldimperium af fte dwingen begrepen de neoconservatieven dat dit ‘process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one,’ tenzij ‘some catastrophic and catalyzing event — like a new Pearl Harbor,’ zou plaatsvinden die de gewenste ontwikkeling zou versnellen.

About ten days after 9/11, I went through the Pentagon and I saw Secretary Rumsfeld and Deputy Secretary Wolfowitz. I went downstairs just to say hello to some of the people on the Joint Staff who used to work for me, and one of the generals called me in. He said, ‘Sir, you’ve got to come in and talk to me a second.’ I said, ‘Well, you’re too busy.’ He said, ‘No, no.’ He says, ‘We’ve made the decision we’re going to war with Iraq.’ This was on or about the 20th of September. I said, ‘We’re going to war with Iraq? Why?’ He said, ‘I don’t know.’ He said, ‘I guess they don’t know what else to do.’ So I said, ‘Well, did they find some information connecting Saddam to al-Qaeda?’ He said, ‘No, no.’ He said, ‘There’s nothing new that way. They just made the decision to go to war with Iraq.’ He said, ‘I guess it’s like we don’t know what to do about terrorists, but we’ve got a good military and we can take down governments.’ And he said, ‘I guess if the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem has to look like a nail.’

Neoconservative pundit Robert Kagan and his wife, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, run a remarkable family business: she has sparked a hot war in Ukraine and helped launch Cold War II with Russia – and he steps in to demand that Congress jack up military spending so America can meet these new security threats.

This extraordinary husband-and-wife duo makes quite a one-two punch for the Military-Industrial Complex, an inside-outside team that creates the need for more military spending, applies political pressure to ensure higher appropriations, and watches as thankful weapons manufacturers lavish grants on like-minded hawkish Washington think tanks…

if it weren’t for Nuland’s efforts as Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs, the Ukraine crisis might not exist. A neocon holdover who advised Vice President Dick Cheney, Nuland gained promotions under former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and received backing, too, from current Secretary of State John Kerry.

Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland, speaking to Ukrainian and other business leaders at the National Press Club in Washington on Dec. 13, 2013, at a meeting sponsored by Chevron.

Confirmed to her present job in September 2013, Nuland soon undertook an extraordinary effort to promote ‘regime change’ in Ukraine. She personally urged on business leaders and political activists to challenge elected President Viktor Yanukovych. She reminded corporate executives that the United States had invested $5 billion in their ‘European aspirations,’ and she literally passed out cookies to anti-government protesters in Kiev’s Maidan square.

Working with other key neocons, including National Endowment for Democracy President Carl Gershman and Sen. John McCain, Nuland made clear that the United States would back a ‘regime change’ against Yanukovych, which grew more likely as neo-Nazi and other right-wing militias poured into Kiev from western Ukraine.

In early February 2014, Nuland discussed U.S.-desired changes with U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt (himself a veteran of a ‘regime change’ operation at the International Atomic Energy Agency, helping to install U.S. yes man Yukiya Amano as the director-general in 2009).

Nuland treated her proposed new line-up of Ukrainian officials as if she were trading baseball cards, casting aside some while valuing others. ‘Yats is the guy,’ she said of her favorite Arseniy Yatsenyuk.

Disparaging the less aggressive European Union, she uttered ‘Fuck the EU’ – and brainstormed how she would ‘glue this thing’ as Pyatt pondered how to ‘mid-wife this thing.’ Their unsecure phone call was intercepted and leaked.

More recently, his book The World America Made has been publicly endorsed by US President Barack Obama, and its theme was referenced in his 2012 State of the Union Address.'

In een recensie van Robert Kagan’s 149 pagina’s tellende boek The World America Made (2012) schreef de bekende New York Times-recensente Michiko Kakutani in haar krant van 14 februari 2012:

One thing Barack Obama and Mitt Romney seem to have in common these days is an appreciation for the neoconservative historian Robert Kagan.

The Romney campaign has retained Mr. Kagan as a foreign-policy adviser, and according to news reports, President Obama has read and been influenced by a recent Kagan essay in The New Republic, which addresses 'the myth of American decline' and underscores the importance of the United States’ maintaining its 'global responsibilities.'

Mr. Kagan’s sometimes shaky reasoning is combined with a failure to grapple convincingly with crucial problems facing America today, the very problems that observers who worry about American decline have cited as clear and present dangers, including political gridlock at home, falling education scores, lowered social mobility and most important, a ballooning deficit. […]

Mr. Kagan hops and skips around such issues, placing way more emphasis on the military aspects of power as a measure of a country’s health and global sway. For instance, of the burgeoning financial clout of China — which already holds more than $1 trillion in United States debt — Mr. Kagan asserts that it has implications for American power in the future 'only insofar as the Chinese translate enough of their growing economic strength into military strength.' […]

This volume is peppered with vague lines like 'many believe that wars among the great powers are no longer possible,' or 'it is a common perception today that the international free market system is simply a natural stage in the evolution of the global economy.'

Zo stelde de recensent van The National Review, dat Kagan ‘prefer[red] to stick to big-picture generalizations, as if nervous his argument [wouldn't] withstand close contact with specifics,’ en voegde hieraan toe dat ‘Kagan never defines terms.’  Bovendien vroeg hij zich af wat Kagan’s definitie van ‘democratie’ is, en merkte op dat hij gaandeweg ‘had a strong urge [...] to toss the book out of the window and back my truck over it.’ Op zijn beurt beschreef

Christopher A. Preble, a Fellow at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, the book as ‘a cri de coeur directed at a foreign — policy establishment beset by doubts and a wider public harboring even deeper ones.’ He added that Kagan's ideas were ‘shortsighted at best, harmful at worst.’ Instead, he argued, ‘The world is both more complicated and more durable than Kagan imagines,’ lamenting Kagan's ‘flawed analysis.’ However, he went on to admit, ‘His ideas represent something close to the reigning orthodoxy in Washington today and for the past two decades.’ He concluded by saying that the book was unconvincing and paralleled an essay Kagan co-wrote in 1996 with Bill Kristol entitled, Toward a Neo-Reaganite Foreign Policy, adding, ‘He didn't prove [his] case before, and he doesn’t now.’

Hoe onze zogenaamde westerse beschaving werkt.......
Hillsborough disaster........Justice(?) after 28 years!
"Bereaved families and survivors have fought a 28-year campaign for justice after South Yorkshire police blamed supporters for the disaster and since the first inquest reached a verdict of accidental death in March 1991. No individual or organisation was prosecuted for any offence, nor were any police officers subjected to disciplinary proceedings."
"Criminal charges could be brought for the first time against individuals and organisations involved in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster."
".....Files on the other eight suspects have been referred by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), which has been investigating South Yorkshire police officers since 2012 for allegedly covering up the force’s own culpability for the disaster and mounting a false case that Liverpool supporters were to blame."
"The potential offences for which the IPCC has submitted files to the CPS, relating to these eight suspects, include perverting the course of justice, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office.

A further 170 allegations of police misconduct, made by family members of the 96 people who died and by Liverpool supporters who were at Hillsborough, were still under investigation"
"Trevor Hicks, the president of the Hillsborough Family Support Group, whose two teenage daughters, Sarah and Vicki, were killed at the match, said he believed diligent investigative work had been done, but that he and some families were disappointed at the number of cases."

Tom Dispatch op Facebook:
While everyone is focused on Trump and Russia, the real story is, I think, China, about which, yesterday, his secretary of state nominee, Exxon's Rex Tillerson, was little short of hair-raising. He suggesting barring China from the atolls in the South China Sea that it is fortifying and militarizing -- and there's only one way to do that: with U.S. air and sea power. In other words, this was a direct call for a military clash with China. And amid the chaos of the Trump news conference yesterday and everything else, including that ludicrous secret "dossier" on Trump, the next possible U.S. war passed almost unnoticed.

"Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, has set the stage for a potential clash with China, saying it should be barred from artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea.
Tillerson said China’s control and construction of artificial islands in waters claimed by neighbouring countries was 'akin to Russia’s taking of Crimea.'
"China claims sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea, building seven artificial islands on reefs and rocks and outfitting them with military-length airstrips and anti-aircraft guns. 'We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed,' Tillerson said during his confirmation hearing to become America’s top diplomat. 'They are taking territory or control or declaring control of territories that are not rightfully China’s.'
"The statements are sure to worry China, which has taken an extremely rigid stance on challenges to its sovereignty claims. Last year, an international tribunal ruled much of China’s territorial claims were invalid, but had little effect and the Chinese government ignored the verdict...
"While Tillerson did not elaborate on how the US would bar China from islands in the South China Sea, experts agreed it would have to involve some form of military deployment. 'Blocking China’s access, presumably with US warships, would precipitate a crisis, a military clash,' said Ashley Townshend, a fellow at the University of Sydney’s United States studies centre."
