Frank Westerman's Provinciale Schrijverij 38

Perhaps you think the Creator sent you here to dispose of us as you see fit. If I thought you were sent by the Creator, I might be induced to think you had a right to dispose of me. Do not misunderstand me, but understand fully with reference to my affection for the land. I never said the land was mine to do with as I choose. The one who has a right to dispose of it is the one who has created it. I claim a right to live on my land and accord you the privilege to live on yours.

New fault lines in Trump’s America have developed. Genuine peaceful protest and concern is being submerged in accusations of organized disruption, a point which has made Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, call upon the calming advice of President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton herself, and Bernie Sanders.

Trump has provided a vigorous, aggressive shake to the establishment. The tremors are still being felt in the frail body politic. For those who opposed, and ignored Trumpism altogether, forms of denial have taken even deeper root. They have little interest in bringing the Trump voters into the fold, let alone idly waiting for a transition period to unfold. Their tactic has now become one of uncivil disobedience ahead of the inauguration, effectively a challenge about the very idea of legitimacy in the United States.
Dr. Binoy Kampmark. Fantasies of Impeachment and Protest: continued Media Misreadings of Donald Trump. 15 november 2016

In de postuum uitgegeven essaybundel America and the Americans (1966) voegde Steinbeck hieraan toe dat ‘It has been proof not only against foreign attack but against our own stupidities, which are sometimes more dangerous,’ een citaat dat Mak met instemming overnam in zijn boek In America. Travels with John Steinbeck (2014).

Ever since then he has known precisely when American democracy, after long years of despair, came back from the dead: ‘7:15 p.m. Central Time, 3 January 2008, Precinct 53, Theodore Roosevelt High,’

Our capitalist democracy ceased to function more than two decades ago. We underwent a corporate coup carried out by the Democratic and Republican parties. There are no institutions left that can authentically be called democratic. Trump and Hillary Clinton in a functioning democracy would have never been presidential nominees. The long and ruthless corporate assault on the working class, the legal system, electoral politics, the mass media, social services, the ecosystem, education and civil liberties in the name of neoliberalism has disemboweled the country. It has left the nation a decayed wreck. We celebrate ignorance. We have replaced political discourse, news, culture and intellectual inquiry with celebrity worship and spectacle,

aldus Hedges op 11 november 2016. Zijn even gerenommeerde Amerikaanse collega Robert Scheer had al twee dagen eerder gewaarschuwd:

Make no mistake about it: This is a crisis of confidence for America’s ruling elite that far surpasses Nixon’s Watergate scandal. They were the enablers of radical deregulation that betrayed Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s contract with the American people in the wake of the Great Depression. The people are hurting, and regrettably, Trump was the only vehicle presented to them by either major party in the general election to register their deepest discontent. The Trump voters are the messenger; don’t demonize them in an effort to salvage the prestige of the superrich elite that has temporarily lost its grip on the main levers of power in this nation.

Thankfully, the Clinton era is over, and the sick notion that the Democratic Party of FDR needed to find a new home in the temples of Wall Street greed has been rudely shattered by the deep anger of the very folks that the Democrats had presumed to represent. That includes working-class women, who failed to respond to the siren song of Clinton, whom the Democratic hacks offered instead of a true progressive like Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. Yes, we need a female president, but not in the mold of Margaret Thatcher.

American diplomats are among the best in the world, the country has outstanding information systems, its army is capable of anything, its universities and the State Department have brilliant strategists and political analysts at their disposal, and American businesses operate all over the world. The United States has had a hand in countless peace negotiations, often bringing them to a successful conclusion,

Islamist rebels and jihadists in Syria are guilty of war crimes, Amnesty International said in a report on Tuesday, accusing them of 'a chilling wave of abductions, torture and summary killings. The London-based rights group named five Syrian anti-regime factions operating in northern Syria: al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front, hardliner Ahrar al-Sham, Nureddin Zinki, the Levant Front and Division 16.

‘I think it was a willful decision,’ aldus geniaal Flynn.

classified DIA report presented in August 2012, stated that ‘the Salafist, the Muslim Brotherhood, and AQI [Al- Qaeda in Iraq] are the major forces driving the insurgency in Syria,’ being supported by ‘the West, Gulf countries and Turkey.’

The document recently declassified through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), analyses the situation in Syria in the summer of 2012 and predicts: ‘If the situation unravels, there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist principality in eastern Syria… and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime.’

U.S. Marine Corps, the highest rank authorized at that time, and at the time of his death the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. During his 34-year career as a Marine, he participated in military actions in the Philippines, China, in Central America and the Caribbean during the Banana Wars, and France in World War I.

1935 — as a second world war was looming — he wrote in the magazine Common Sense,

‘I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism [corporatism]. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.’

That same year he published a short book with the now-famous title War Is a Racket, for which he is best-known today. Butler opened the book with these words:

‘War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.’

He followed this by noting, ‘For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it. Now that I see the international war clouds gathering, as they are today, I must face it and speak out.’

Butler went on to describe who bears the costs of war — the men who die or return home with wrecked lives, and the taxpayers — and who profits — the companies that sell goods and services to the military. (The term ‘military-industrial complex’ would not gain prominence until 1961, when Dwight Eisenhower used it in his presidential farewell address. See Nick Turse’s book The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives.)

Writing in the mid-1930s, Butler foresaw a U.S. war with Japan to protect trade with China and investments in the Philippines, and declared that it would make no sense to the average American:

‘We would be all stirred up to hate Japan and go to war — a war that might well cost us tens of billions of dollars, hundreds of thousands of lives of Americans, and many more hundreds of thousands of physically maimed and mentally unbalanced men.

Of course, for this loss, there would be a compensating profit — fortunes would be made. Millions and billions of dollars would be piled up. By a few. Munitions makers. Bankers. Ship builders. Manufacturers. Meat packers. Speculators. They would fare well.…

But what does it profit the men who are killed? What does it profit their mothers and sisters, their wives and their sweethearts? What does it profit their children?

What does it profit anyone except the very few to whom war means huge profits?’

Noting that ‘until 1898 [and the Spanish-American War] we didn’t own a bit of territory outside the mainland of North America,’ he observed that after becoming an expansionist world power, the U.S. government’s debt swelled 25 times and ‘we forgot George Washington’s warning about “entangling alliances.” We went to war. We acquired outside territory.

It would have been far cheaper (not to say safer) for the average American who pays the bills to stay out of foreign entanglements. For a very few this racket, like bootlegging and other underworld rackets, brings fancy profits, but the cost of operations is always transferred to the people — who do not profit.’

Butler detailed the huge profits of companies that sold goods to the government during past wars and interventions and the banks that made money handling the government’s bonds.

‘The normal profits of a business concern in the United States are six, eight, ten, and sometimes twelve percent. But war-time profits — ah! that is another matter — twenty, sixty, one hundred, three hundred, and even eighteen hundred percent — the sky is the limit. All that traffic will bear. Uncle Sam has the money. Let’s get it.

Of course, it isn’t put that crudely in war time. It is dressed into speeches about patriotism, love of country, and “we must all put our shoulders to the wheel,” but the profits jump and leap and skyrocket — and are safely pocketed.’

And who provides these returns? ‘We all pay them — in taxation.… But the soldier pays the biggest part of the bill.’

His description of conditions at veterans’ hospitals reminded me of what we’re hearing today about the dilapidated veterans’ health-care system. Butler expressed his outrage at how members of the armed forces are essentially tricked into going to war — at a pitiful wage.

‘Beautiful ideals were painted for our boys who were sent out to die. This was the “war to end all wars.” This was the “war to make the world safe for democracy.” No one mentioned to them, as they marched away, that their going and their dying would mean huge war profits. No one told these American soldiers that they might be shot down by bullets made by their own brothers here. No one told them that the ships on which they were going to cross might be torpedoed by submarines built with United States patents. They were just told it was to be a “glorious adventure.”

Thus, having stuffed patriotism down their throats, it was decided to make them help pay for the war, too. So, we gave them the large salary of $30 a month.’

‘America at War With Itself’ demolishes the pedestrian (simplistische. svh) (and dangerous) argument that Trump appeals to legitimate working-class populism driven by class anger. The claim that Trump followers are simply working-class whites expressing class resentment ignores both the historical link between whiteness, citizenship, and humanity, and also the American dream of wealth accumulation built on private property. Trump's people are not Levelers! (Nor are they universally ‘working-class’ — their annual median income clocks in at about $72,000.) They strongly believe in private property and the right to bear arms to protect that property. They don't just ignore Trump's wealth; they are enamored (verliefd op. svh) with it. They embrace the dream that if only America can be restored to its mythic greatness — which is to say, to return to its status as ‘a white MAN's country’ (as if it is not now) — they, too, can become a Trump. But their racism, reinforced by civic illiteracy, has convinced them that it is the descendants of unfree labor or the colonized, or those who are currently unfree, who are blocking their ascent to the world of Trump and the billionaire Koch brothers.

Giroux understands just how racist resentment feeds authoritarianism, and how this dialectic is nourished by reactionary pedagogies. While many of us are fully familiar with neoliberal policies that have redistributed wealth upward, ripped away any real safety net for the poor, and promoted capital flight, outsourcing, and free trade policies that destroy the environment and reduce much of the world's labor force to semi-slavery, we are less familiar with policies and practices that cultivate popular ignorance, that reduce the body politic to civic illiterates, and that privatize what ought to be an open and vibrant public sphere. With his inimitable insight, intellectual dexterity (vaardigheid. svh), and political acuity (actualiteit. svh), Giroux exposes these policies and their consequences…

Whereas the forces of neoliberalism hypocritically scream, ‘Stop Trump,’ Giroux calls on us to wage ‘an anti-fascist struggle that is not simply about remaking economic structures, but also about refashioning identities, values, and social relations as part of a democratic project that reconfigures what it means to desire a better and more democratic future.’

Once again, Henry A. Giroux slices through the thick fog of spectacle, mindless punditry (onnozele opiniemakers. svh), mountains of polling data, the smokescreen of corporate media — all the bullshit — and cuts to the point. These are indeed dark times, but they are dark not merely because we are living in an era of vast inequality, mass incarceration, and crass materialism, or that we face an increasingly precarious future. They are dark because most Americans are living under a cloak of ignorance, a cultivated and imposed state of civic illiteracy that has opened the gates for what Giroux correctly sees as an authoritarian turn in the United States. These are dark times because the very fate of democracy is at stake — a democracy fragile from its birth, always battered on the shoals of racism, patriarchy, and class rule. The rise of Donald J. Trump is a sign of the times.

Before you start nodding your head, Giroux does not argue that Trump is the cancer and his removal from the body politic is the answer. Trump is merely the symptom; he is the barometer of our current political, cultural, and social climate. He defies (weerspreekt. svh) the analyses of the so-called liberal pundits who either sound the alarm, insisting that Trump is dangerous and needs to be stopped, or dismiss him as the latest clown in the two-ring circus we call American politics. What we are facing is not a crisis of Republican implosion or political deform; this is not your MSNBC smug (zelfgenoegzame. svh) defense of the Democratic Party’s sanity in the face of Republican insanity. Giroux harbors no such illusions: ‘The spirit of authoritarianism cuts across both political parties.’ But as Giroux also notes, these same pundits sounding the alarm to ‘Stop Trump’ do not insist that racism has to stop, foreign and domestic wars have to stop, the crimes of finance capital have to stop, policies that render most Americans — especially those of darker hue — precarious or disposable, have to stop.

Giroux is not interested in Trump the clown, Trump the narcissist, Trump the racist, or even Trump the con artist. Instead, he turns his critical sights on the society that produced and legitimized him. From his rabid and rapidly growing right-wing following to the channel surfers seeking a good chuckle to the liberal elite quick to dismiss ‘The Donald’ with smug indifference, our country and its democracy is in steep decline. After all, this is the same society that holds 2.5 million in cages, most of whom are black and brown and poor; whose military budget is larger than that of China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, the U.K., India, and Japan combined; where the killing of unarmed Black people by police, security guards, or vigilantes has become almost a daily occurrence; where the toxic mix of privatization, free-market ideology and a ‘punitive state’ has turned our schools into high-stakes testing grounds and human warehouses in which the administration of discipline has shifted from teachers and principals to the criminal justice system; where the War on Drugs, with ‘zero tolerance’ policing, turns some neighborhoods into open-air prisons, strips vulnerable residents of equal protection, habeas corpus, freedom of movement, even protection from torture; and where, in states such as Michigan, local governance has been replaced by so-called Emergency Financial Managers whose primary objective is to privatize public resources and basic needs (e.g., water). And the band plays on... or, as Giroux so aptly puts it, we move ‘from a culture of questioning to a culture of shouting.’

WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THE POWERFUL DECEIVE US.
THEY KNOW WE KNOW THEY LIE.
THEY DON’T CARE. WE SAY WE CARE.
BUT WE DO NOTHING AND NOTHING EVER CHANGES.
IT’S NORMAL. WELCOME TO THE POST-TRUTH WORLD.

I.G. Farben, the company that became the German war machine's key component, was under the control of Rockefeller's Standard Oil at the time it funded 45 percent of Hitler's election campaign in 1930. Through General Electric, J.P. Morgan controlled the German radio and electrical industry in the form of AEG and Siemens (by 1933, General Electric owned a 30 percent stake in AEG). Through telecom company ITT, he controlled 40 percent of Germany's telephone network and 30 percent of aircraft manufacturer Focke-Wulf. Opel was taken over by the Dupont family's General Motors. Henry Ford held a 100 percent stake in Volkswagen. In 1926, with the participation of Rockefeller bank, Dillon Reed and Co., the second largest industrial monopoly emerged - metallurgical firm Vereinigte Stahlwerke (Unified Steel Trusts) of Thyssen, Flick, Wolf, Fegler, etc.

American cooperation with Germany's military-industrial complex became so intense and pervasive that, by 1933, American capital had reached key sectors of German industry and even major banks like Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, Donat Bank, etc.

Comment: Germany presented an incredible investment opportunity. A well-educated, motivated population in a key geographic location available for pennies on the dollar. Perhaps some investors were not concerned about other agendas.

Simultaneously, a political force was being financed that would be called upon to play a crucial role in the Anglo-American plans — the Nazi party and Adolf Hitler himself.

German Chancellor Brüning wrote in his memoirs that beginning in 1923, Hitler received large sums of money from abroad - from where exactly is unknown, but it passed through Swiss and Swedish banks. It is also known that in 1922, Hitler met with U.S. Military Attaché Capt. Truman Smith in Munich - a meeting Smith recounted in a detailed report to his Washington superiors (in the Office of Military Intelligence), saying he thought highly of Hitler.

It was through Smith's circle of acquaintances that Hitler came into contact with ‘Putzi’ (Ernst Franz Sedgwick Hanfstaengl), a Harvard University graduate who played an important role shaping Hitler into a successful politician, giving him substantial financial support and connections among senior British figures.

I am basically there to make money. I can not and do not look at the social consequences of what I do.’ Nogmaals: ‘WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE THE POWERFUL DECEIVE US,’ met de bewuste steun van Nederlandse opiniemakers als de zo aimabel geachte Mak.

Eichmann is definitief geschiedenis geworden.

We live in a strange time. Extraordinary events keep happening that undermine the stability of our world. Suicide bombs, waves of refugees, Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, even Brexit. Yet those in control seem unable to deal with them, and no-one has any vision of a different or a better kind of future.

This film will tell the story of how we got to this strange place. It is about how, over the past 40 years, politicians, financiers and technological utopians, rather than face up to the real complexities of the world, retreated. Instead, they constructed a simpler version of the world in order to hang on to power. And as this fake world grew, all of us went along with it, because the simplicity was reassuring. Even those who thought they were attacking the system - the radicals, the artists, the musicians, and our whole counterculture — actually became part of the trickery, because they, too, had retreated into the make-believe world, which is why their opposition has no effect and nothing ever changes.

But this retreat into a dream world allowed dark and destructive forces to fester and grow outside. Forces that are now returning to pierce the fragile surface of our carefully constructed fake world.
