Frank Westerman's Provinciale Schrijverij 35

I think the only people who are surprised are those who enabled it to happen. I am speaking about mainly what is called in the United States the liberal class. They told us that only a corrupt war-mongering status quo would be acceptable for the majority. They have created Trump, in the same way they created Blair and others like these populists. In the U.S. they corrupted a voting system within the Democratic Party that ensured that the other populist, Bernie Sanders, could not be chosen but instead the corrupt candidate of the status quo, who declared the whole world a battlefield. This grotesque campaigning for a person who represented great rapacious (roofzuchtig. svh) power as a candidate of sanity has been probably the most eye-opening side of this. She is clearly the embodiment of a corrupt system. She is the embodiment of a dangerous war mongering system.

Adolf Hitler

The individual is handicapped by coming face-to-face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists. The American mind simply has not come to a realization of the evil which has been introduced into our midst. It rejects even the assumption that human creatures could espouse a philosophy which must ultimately destroy all that is good and decent.
J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the FBI, Elks Magazine, August 1956

Adolf Hitler. Mein Kampf. 1925/1926

War has taken on an existential quality in that we are not simply at war; rather, as Étienne Balibar insists, ‘we are in war,’ inhabiting a war culture that touches every aspect of society. War is no longer an instrument to be used by political powers, but a form of rule, a general condition of the social order itself -- a permanent social relation and organizing principle that affects all aspects of the social order. In fact, the US has moved from a welfare state in the last forty years to a warfare state, and war has now become the foundation for politics, wedded to a misguided war on terror, the militarization of everyday life, and a culture of fear, which have become its most important regulative functions. Politics has become a comprehensive war machine that aggressively assaults anything that does not comply with its underlying economic, religious, educative and political fundamentalisms.

Such high levels of spending frequently raise concerns as to the ‘opportunity cost’ involved in military spending — the potential civilian uses of such resources that are lost.

One way to put this in perspective is to compare it to social spending… In particular, how far would this money go towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)?

 * According to a 2015 OECD report on climate finance, a number of high-income developed countries have pledged to raise aid to developing countries to $100 billion a year by 2020 to fund green technology and to help deal with the consequences of climate change (SDG 13). This amounts to 8.3% of high-income developed countries’ military spending in 2015.

* A 2015 report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization suggests that eliminating extreme poverty and hunger sustainably by 2030 (SDGs 1 and 2) would require an estimated additional $265 billion a year on average (2013 prices). Of this, $89–$147 billion would need to come from public funding, putting total annual public spending requirements at $156–214 billion (2013 prices). This amounts to 9.5–13% of global military spending in 2015.

* The 2015 Education for All Global Monitoring Report found that providing universal primary and early secondary education of adequate quality by 2030 (SDG 4) would require an additional $239 billion a year in spending (2012 prices). Much of this could come from countries’ domestic resources, with donor countries providing the rest. The exact amount donor countries would need to provide depends on low and middle-income countries’ education spending over the next 15 years. If education spending as a percentage of GDP continues to increase in 2015–2030, the report calculates $22 billion will be needed on average each year. If education spending as a share of GDP only carries on at today’s levels, the amount required increases to $52.5 billion a year. This is 3.2% of global military spending in 2015.

* A 2015 report by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network found that achieving the SDGs in health, education, agriculture and food security, access to modern energy, water supply and sanitation, telecommunications and transport infrastructure, ecosystems, and emergency response and humanitarian work (SDGs 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 15), including additional sums to allow for climate change mitigation and adaptation, would require further spending from public sources of $760–$885 billion a year between 2015–30 (2013 prices). This amounts to 46–54% of world military spending in 2015.

Reallocating only around 10% of world military spending would thus be enough to achieve major progress on some key SDGs, supposing that such funds could be effectively channelled towards these goals and that major obstacles, such as corruption and conflict, could be overcome.

In fiscal year 2015, military spending is projected to account for 54 percent of all federal discretionary spending, a total of $598.5 billion. Military spending includes: all regular activities of the Department of Defense; war spending; nuclear weapons spending; international military assistance; and other Pentagon-related spending.

The U.S. outpaces all other nations in military expenditures. World military spending totaled more than $1.6 trillion in 2015. The U.S. accounted for 37 percent of the total.

U.S. military expenditures are roughly the size of the next seven largest military budgets around the world, combined.

U.S. military spending dwarfs the budget of the number 2 country – China. For every dollar China spends on its military, the U.S. spends $2.77.

In the decade following Sept. 11, 2001, military spending increased 50 percent, adjusted for inflation. In comparison, spending on every other non-military program — things like education, health care, public transit, and science — grew by only 13.5 percent over the same time period.

A 2015 report from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization suggests that eliminating extreme poverty and hunger sustainably by 2030 would require an estimated additional $265 billion a year on average.

Door de voortdurende aanslagen op de biodiversiteit in de wereld en alle andere vormen van milieuschade ‘scientists are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs,’ aldus de Amerikaanse hoogleraar Elizabeth Kolbert. In haar boek The Sixth Extinction. An Unnatural History (2014), beschrijft zij hoe ‘This time around, the cataclysm is us.’ Op de kritische website consortiumnews.com van 8 november 2016 — de dag dat Hillary Clinton verloor — zette de Amerikaanse ‘advisor on Russia to the Special Representative for Global Inter-governmental Affairs at the US State Department,’ James W. Carden het volgende uiteen:

The New Cold Warriors who surround Hillary Clinton have made Russia-bashing and McCarthyism the go-to tactics to silence the few voices warning of the grave and unnecessary risks of a new Cold War.

Now that the 2016 election campaign is at long last over, an examination of the reckless, fact-free, innuendo-laden McCarthyite rhetoric which Hillary Clinton’s campaign surrogates deployed over the past several months is in order.

The first and most obvious point to be made is that the anti-Russia hysteria that characterized the election, particularly in its final weeks, did not come out of nowhere; in fact, it should be seen as part of a natural progression of the elite media’s Russophobia which took root in and around the Ukraine crisis of late 2013-early 2014 and led, almost ineffably, not only to charges of Russian election-rigging in the United States but in the identification, in the pages of Newsweek and the Washington Post, of Russian fifth-columns within the United States.

How the Ukraine crisis poisoned America political discourse is by now well known. As I reported in ‘The Nation’ almost 18 months ago, the cottage industry of unscrupulous neo-McCarthyites which has grown up around Washington, London and Manhattan in recent years has sought to stifle debate by bandying charges of unpatriotic disloyalty against anyone questioning the wisdom of U.S. policy toward Russia. (It bears noting that something similar regarding Syria policy is happening as I write, driven, for the most part, by the usual suspects.)

As one long time political scientist told me at the time, ‘The atmosphere here in the U.S. created by the Ukraine crisis is poisonous — and I say this having been an academic for 37 years.’

The millennial careerists who help staff the ranks of the New Cold Warriors instinctually reach for ad hominem attacks over reasoned argument — and in so doing helped make way for the tactics the Clinton campaign unleashed in 2016.

By the time the nominating conventions rolled around this summer, the Clinton campaign was engaged in a Twenty-first Century witch hunt against any Trump adviser who had so much as visited Russia. Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and foreign policy adviser Carter Page were both hounded out of the campaign by Clinton-inspired media smears.

Clinton’s campaign, which was run by Robby Mook, a 36-year-old hot shot who clearly relished his role as a kind of millennial Roy Cohn, repeatedly attacked former Ambassador to Germany and arms control negotiator under Ronald Reagan, Richard Burt.

Burt was singled out, not only by the Clinton camp, but by Salon and Newsweek, because he had served as an adviser to Alfa Bank, the Russian bank which played a starring role in former New Republic editor’s Franklin Foer’s thoroughly debunked article on the Trump Organization’s (non-existent) ‘secret’ email server.

Yet what is most interesting isn’t so much the smears — phrases like ‘useful idiot’ and ‘Kremlin stooge’ which are mostly warmed-over fare from the first Cold War — but the mindset of the New Cold Warriors. How is it that these self-anointed crusaders for ‘humanitarian intervention’ and ‘democratization,’ these self-appointed enemies of tyranny, end up on the side of neo-Nazis in Ukraine, Al Qaeda and al-Nusra affiliate in Syria, all the while stirring up sectarian and nationalist pathologies across the Middle East and Eastern Europe?

There is little doubt that, come Nov. 9, a fractured USA will plod on with one of two of the most disliked politicians in recent memory to try for the White House in place as President. Should Trump win, an astounding transformation will have taken place. A blustering, lying bigot will have ridden a wave of White discontent into a sea of political and cultural disenchantment and who will immediately face widespread opprobrium at home and abroad. His supporters, many proto-fascist and proud of it, will celebrate appropriately. How that ends, no one can predict, but opposition will be fierce and quite possibly ugly.

If Clinton wins, all kinds of stories will be created including that of that an intelligent, ambitious woman so resentful of her philandering former President husband that she took to politics to redeem herself and her gender and finally broke the Great Glass Ceiling. Such myth-making hogwash (nonsens. svh) will grow even worse as apologists unite behind her warmongering ways while the streets are stocked with military-suited police forces dampening dissension. However, the opposition to her will probably be large as well, with armed right-wingers screaming about impeachment on one side, and the scattered remnants of Bernie Sanders´ voters fighting vainly to keep her honest from the other side.

I do not need to remind anyone that Presidential politics has hit new lows and it is this which has finally tipped my hand. The same pattern repeats itself every four years with some Troglodyte on one side threatening the end of Western civilization, facing a minor Trog from the ‘other side’ for whom we must pinch our noses and select as the ‘lesser of two evils’ or else the sky will fall and endless wars, social cutbacks, and ever more restrictions on our rights will follow. I am old enough to have figured this one out. And I´m not invested in it anymore.

It will be a mess either way…

It’s become too much for me. The US, as a country where nearly 80% of the people believe in angels but barely half accept that climate change is real, is a country moving backwards, not forward. And in the little time remaining in my life, I want to live in a place where people move forward, peacefully, with their ambitions sincere and their lives openly and proudly connected to the larger world. I don´t feel that bragging about how great you are is the appropriate default position to take publicly, when millions remain poor, disenfranchised, and bitter about being politically powerless while fearful of immigrants seeking better for their lives. It´s too painful. There has been a growing gap between US culture and myself, that combustible mixture of easy access to guns and little access to reason and comradeship. I don´t like the low level daily violence, the anger, the resentment, the defensiveness, the loudness, the commercialization of everything, the fake news, the phony ‘issues’ and the willfully insular perspective. I also don’t like the macho posturing that is part of everything, leading to so-called open carry laws allowing guns in churches, schools, and bars. That is a madness people outside the US see with a clarity that is as sharp as it is obscured by the violent defense of it in the US. You can keep it. It ain´t me.

In two short centuries we are practically going down the drain. Ausgespielt! No one is going to mourn our passing, not even those we helped to survive. In the brief span of our history we managed to poison the world. We poisoned it with our ideas of progress, efficiency, mechanization. We made robots of our stalwart (stoere. svh) pioneers. We dehumanized the world we live in… It seems as if we were conceived in violence and hatred, as if we were born to plunder, rape and murder. Our history books gloss over the cruelties and abominations, the immoral behavior of our leaders...

They name it a republic and a democracy, but it never was and is not even one now. A few patrician, wealthy families control the government of these states… Indeed, for all our talk of progress, we are just as narrow-minded, prejudiced, blood-thirsty as ever we were. Just look at the military situation — the Pentagon! — is enough to give one the shivers. The last war – Vietnam – what foul doings! Tamerlane and Atilla are nothing compared to our latter-day monsters armed with nuclear weapons, napalm, etc. If Hitler subsidized genocide, what about us? We have been practicing genocide from our very inception! That goes for Indian, Negro, Mexican, anyone… And we wonder why, as a nation, as a people, we are falling apart… In short, how to survive in an age of barbarism such as ours…

We have plenty of money for bombers, submarines, warheads, for all that is destructive, but not for culture, not for education, or for relief of the poor. What a thing to say of the supposedly greatest nation in the world that thousands of our poor are content to live on dog and cat food. I say thousands, but for all I know it may be millions… The cream, so-called, of society is just as criminal-minded as the dregs (uitschot. svh)… In Roman times it were the emperors and patricians who were pathological. Today in America it is the citizenry… Money indeed is the only thing that talks. All the rest is mute. All the rest watch unblinkingly while one atrocity after another is perpetrated. To speak of the public is to speak of the unacknowledged Sphinx. It hears nothing, sees nothing, smells nothing, says nothing. And all the while it gives off a vile odor — not the odor of sanctity, as in ancient times, but the odor of neutrality, of indifference…

And only that Democrat or that Republican stands a chance who is a ‘friend’ not of the people but of vested ‘interests.’ Millions of dollars are spent to elect a fool or knave (schurk. svh) — in any case, a willing puppet. And this is styled a democratic form of government… He is but a pawn in the hands of the various greedy, blood-sucking interests… For all their woes and misery, our people have been thoroughly brainwashed to accept and endure any conditions imposed on them… Our foreign policy has always been a disgrace… Always the first, the best, the greatest, the biggest, the mostest. Here superlatives have lost all value… The streak of Puritanism in us is ineradicable…

There are many, many ways of preventing the truth from coming out. And of squelching unwelcome views of a writer or thinker… In a sense, censorship is with us always. The men in power know how to protect themselves… If I look upon our history as a total flop, I could say the same about most civilized countries… Of all the civilized peoples in the world I regard the American as the most restless, the most unsatisfied, the idiot who thinks he can change the world into his own image of it. In the process of making the world better, as he foolishly imagines, he is poisoning, destroying it.

thought that there was no order or design in the world, that dreams and prophecies had no validity; that man had complete freedom because it made no difference what he did – nothing made any sense. She was wrong; the design was there, and when she saw what it was she hanged herself. But the play now seems to give us a view of man’s position that is just as comfortless as her acceptance of a meaningless universe. What place is there in it for human freedom and meaningful action? Oedipus did have one freedom: he was free to find out or not find out the truth… One freedom is allowed him: the freedom to search for the truth, the truth about the prophecies, about the gods, about himself. And of this freedom he makes full use. Against the advice and appeals of others, he pushes on, searching for the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And in this search he shows all those great qualities that we admire in him — courage, intelligence, perseverance… This freedom to search, and the heroic way in which Oedipus uses it, make the play not a picture of man’s utter feebleness caught in the toils of fate, but on the contrary, a heroic example of man’s dedication to the search of truth, the truth about himself. This is perhaps the only freedom, the play seems to say, but there could be none more noble.

ignorance can be remedied, the ignorant can learn, and the force with which Oedipus now reasserts his presence springs from the truth he now understands: that the universe is not a field for the play of blind chance, and that man is not its measure. This knowledge gives him a new strength which sustains him in his misery and gives him the courage needed to go on living, though he is now an outcast, a man from whom his fellow-men recoil in horror… The catastrophe of the tragic hero thus becomes the catastrophe of… man; all his furious energy and intellectual daring drive him on to this terrible discovery of his fundamental ignorance — he is not the measure of all things but the thing measured and found wanting.

Sophocles’ play has served modern man and his haunted sense of being caught in a trap not only as a base for a psychoanalytic theory which dooms the male infant to guilt and anxiety from his mother’s breast, but also as the model for a modern drama that presents us, using the ancient figures, our own terror of the unknown future which we fear we cannot control — our deep fear that every step we take forward on what we think is the road of progress may really be a step toward a foreordained rendezvous with disaster. The greatest of these modern versions is undoubtedly Jean Cocteau’s ‘Machine Infernale’; the title alone is, as the French say, a whole program. Cocteau also worked with Stravinsky on an operatic version of the Sophoclean play (the text in liturgical Latin), and for a recording of this work he wrote a prologue that sums up his compelling vision of man’s place in a strange and haunted universe. ‘Spectateurs,’ the author says in his forceful, rather nasal voice, ‘sans le savoir…’ without knowing it, Oedipus is at grips with the powers that watch us from the other side of death. They have spread for him, since the day of his birth, a trap and you are going to watch it snap shut… Nothing mortal can resist the changes Time brings: not bodily strength, not friendship between man and man, still less between city and city. No man can be confident of the future; human confidence is based on total ignorance.

It is a universe governed by powers in whose justice man must assert, in ignorance and with little hope of confirmation, a desperate belief.’ De Amerikaanse stand-up comedian George Carlin reageerde daarom eens met de opmerking dat het de ‘Amerikaanse Droom’ wordt genoemd, ‘because you have to be asleep to believe it.’ In Critical Essays on Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1984) schreef de gerespecteerde Amerikaanse literatuurcriticus Lionel Trilling, die Scott Fitzgerald ‘the spokesman and symbol’ noemde van ‘his own restless generation’

Gatsby, divided between power and dream, comes inevitably to stand for American itself. Ours is the only nation that prides itself upon a dream.

The Great Gatsby is namelijk een werk ‘we have to deal with ever afterward.’ Wijlen Norman Holmes Pearson merkte in dezelfde Critical Essays het volgende op over de rijken en hun parasitaire aanhang die The Great Gatsby bevolken:

The stimulation of these people who dance their lives comes from outside rather than inside of themselves, as though will did not count but only the helpless stimulation of the senses as they are played upon by the winds of the band. This is not the Gay Twenties, when youth was free, but a time of illness and disease,

the uncontrolled romantic [is], his is the American Dream of succes. Into his ambition, he has absorbed what a man like Benjamin Franklin, through his Autobiography, has come to stand for as an image: that a man can be what he makes himself to be,

was not glibly posturing when he stated late in life that his outlook was ‘essentially Marxian,’

does not share their abhorrence of capitalism. Fitzgerald’s notorious ambivalence toward the rich was vital to his artistic power, for his double consciousness permitted him not to expose the hidden corruption of their society but to reveal the seductive allure of what he indicted.

Ross Posnock voegt hieraan toe:

Strikingly, Fitzgerald’s conflicting images of the individual suggested in his 1924 statement recall a central contradiction that Lukacs finds in capitalism: ‘the fact that the bourgeoisie endowed the individual with an unprecedented importance, but at the same time that same individuality was annihilated by the economic conditions to which it was subjected by the reification (verzakelijking. svh) created by commodity production… The novel’s account of man’s relation to society… profoundly agrees with Marx’s great discovery that it is social reality rather than individual consciousness that determines man’s existence.

Giesen’s ‘Liberale democratie’ heeft het tevens mogelijk gemaakt dat de ‘top one tenth of one percent of Americans has as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent of Americans combined.’

I think the only people who are surprised are those who enabled it to happen. I am speaking about mainly what is called in the United States a liberal class.

"You have to consider the possibility that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability He hates you. It’s not the worst thing that could happen."
"Our fathers were our models for God, if our fathers bailed, what does that tell you about God?"
