Hooftprijs 'een onvergelijkelijke erkenning' is van zijn eigen meesterschap, verscheen Dwight Macdonald's postuum uitgegeven bundel Masscult and Midcult: Essays Against the American Grain (2011).

In Masscult (and in its bastard Midcult) everything becomes a commodity, to be mined for $$$$, used for something it is not, from Davy Crockett to Picasso. Once a writer becomes a Name, that is, once he writes a book that for good or bad reasons catches on, the Masscult (or Midcult) mechanism begins to ‘build him up,’ to package him into something that can be sold in identical units in quantity.

predigests art for the spectator and spares him effort, provides him with a shortcut to the pleasures of art that detours what is necessarily difficult in the genuine art,

omdat het ‘includes the spectator’s reactions in the work itself instead of forcing him to make his own responses.’

customers neither an emotional catharsis nor an aesthetic experience, for these demand effort. The production line grinds out a uniform product whose humble aim is not even entertainment, for this too implies life and hence effort, but merely distraction. It may be stimulating or narcotic, but it must be easy to assimilate. It asks nothing of its audience, for it is ‘totally subjected to the spectator.’ And it gives nothing,

aldus Dwight Macdonald.

Let me finally return to Dwight Macdonald and the responsibility of intellectuals. Macdonald quotes an interview with a death-camp paymaster who burst into tears when told that the Russians would hang him. ‘Why should they? What have I done?’ he asked. Macdonald concludes: ‘Only those who are willing to resist authority themselves when it conflicts too intolerably with their personal moral code, only they have the right to condemn the death-camp paymaster.’ The question, ‘What have I done?’ is one that we may well ask ourselves, as we read each day of fresh atrocities in Vietnam—as we create, or mouth, or tolerate the deceptions that will be used to justify the next defense of freedom.

The system operates through a complex of inducements, privileges, class interests, etc., relying on the tendency of much of the intelligentsia to conform to power (while proclaiming their courageous independence of mind), and the unwillingness to endure vilification, lies, and denial of the opportunity to work and publish, as punishment for telling the truth.

Chomsky:

Certainly much of the reconstruction of imperial ideology and effacement of the record of American crimes is quite deliberate. It must be remembered that American liberalism was responsible for many of the worst crimes, not only in Indochina, and the articulate intelligentsia largely supported the war in Indochina, turning against it when business circles did and for the same 'pragmatic' reasons. The basic principle, one of long standing, is that the 'responsible intellectuals' must undertake what is called 'the engineering of consent,' the shaping of popular attitudes to support the aims of those with objective power. Again, a person who is concerned to help suffering people will concentrate his energies on combating these forces, which, needless to say, dominate the ideological institutions.

Wat opiniemakers fabriceren is fastfood for the mind, zowel qua vorm als inhoud.

We have, in short, become skilled at consuming High Culture when it has been stamped by the proper authorities, but we lack the kind of sophisticated audience that supported the achievements of the classic avant-garde, an audience that can appreciate and discriminate on its own.

For this more difficult enterprise, we shall need what we very well may not get for all our four million college population: a cultural community. The term is pompous but I can think of no more accurate one. It is strange how many brain-workers we have and how few intellectuals, how many specialists whose knowledge and interest are confined to their own ‘field’ and how few generalists whose interests are broad and nonprofessional.

Macdonald:

A century ago Lord Melbourne, himself a strikingly nonspecialized and indeed rather ignorant intellectual, observed: ‘A man may be master of the ancient and modern languages and yet his manners shall not be in the least degree softened or harmonized. The elegance, grace and feeling which he is continually contemplating cannot mix with his thoughts or insinuate themselves into their expression -- he remains as coarse, as rude and awkward, and often more so, than the illiterate and the ill-instructed.’ One of Melbourne’s favorite quotations was Jacques’s remark, in As You Like It, when the rustic clown quotes Ovid: ‘O knowledge ill-inhabited -- worse than Jove in a thatched house!’

Macdonald:

One might also cite Ortega y Gasset’s observation, apropos of ‘the barbarization of specialization’: ‘Today, when there are more scientists than ever, there are fewer cultured men than, for example, in 1750.’

February 23, 1967

TWENTY-YEARS AGO, Dwight Macdonald published a series of articles in Politics on the responsibility of peoples and, specifically, the responsibility of intellectuals. I read them as an undergraduate, in the years just after the war, and had occasion to read them again a few months ago. They seem to me to have lost none of their power or persuasiveness. Macdonald is concerned with the question of war guilt. He asks the question: To what extent were the German or Japanese people responsible for the atrocities committed by their governments? And, quite properly, he turns the question back to us: To what extent are the British or American people responsible for the vicious terror bombings of civilians, perfected as a technique of warfare by the Western democracies and reaching their culmination in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, surely among the most unspeakable crimes in history. To an undergraduate in 1945-46—to anyone whose political and moral consciousness had been formed by the horrors of the 1930s, by the war in Ethiopia, the Russian purge, the ‘China Incident,’ the Spanish Civil War, the Nazi atrocities, the Western reaction to these events and, in part, complicity in them—these questions had particular significance and poignancy.

With respect to the responsibility of intellectuals, there are still other, equally disturbing questions. Intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments, to analyze actions according to their causes and motives and often hidden intentions. In the Western world, at least, they have the power that comes from political liberty, from access to information and freedom of expression. For a privileged minority, Western democracy provides the leisure, the facilities, and the training to seek the truth lying hidden behind the veil of distortion and misrepresentation, ideology and class interest, through which the events of current history are presented to us. The responsibilities of intellectuals, then, are much deeper than what Macdonald calls the ‘responsibility of people,’ given the unique privileges that intellectuals enjoy.

The issues that Macdonald raised are as pertinent today as they were twenty years ago. We can hardly avoid asking ourselves to what extent the American people bear responsibility for the savage American assault on a largely helpless rural population in Vietnam, still another atrocity in what Asians see as the ‘Vasco da Gama era’ of world history. As for those of us who stood by in silence and apathy as this catastrophe slowly took shape over the past dozen years—on what page of history do we find our proper place? Only the most insensible can escape these questions. I want to return to them, later on, after a few scattered remarks about the responsibility of intellectuals and how, in practice, they go about meeting this responsibility in the mid-1960s. […]

Noam Chomsky: The Responsibility of Intellectuals

Omdat in het neoliberalisme winst maken het heiligste geloofsartikel is spreekt Berger van 'the dealers of the Free Market and their corollary, the Mafia,' die weten dat

they now have the world in their pocket. They have. But to maintain their confidence they have to change the meaning of all the words used in languages to explain or praise or give value to life: every word, according to them now, is the servant of profit. And so they have become dumb. Or, rather, they can no longer speak any truth. Their language is too withered for that. As a consequence they have also lost the faculty of memory. A loss which one day will be fatal.

In Hidden History. Exploring Our Secret Past (1987) begint de gerespecteerde Amerikaanse historicus, wijlen Daniel Boorstin hoofdstuk 10, handelend over The Rhetoric of Democracy, met:

Advertising, of course, has been part of the mainstream of American civilization, although you might not know it if you read the most respectable surveys of American history. It has been one of the enticements to the settlement of this New World, and in its modern form, in its worldwide reach, it has been one of our most characteristic products.

Never was there a more outrageous or more unscrupulous or more ill-informed advertising campaign than that by which the promoters for the American colonies brought settlers here. Brochures published in England in the seventeenth century, some even earlier, were full of hopeful overstatements, half-truths, and downright lies, along with some facts which nowadays surely would be the basis for investigation by a Better Business Bureau. Gold and silver, fountains of youth, plenty of fish, venison without limit, all these were promised, and of course some of them were actually here. How long might it have taken to settle this continent if there had not been such promotion by enterprising advertisers? How has American civilization been shaped by the fact that there was a kind of natural selection here of those people who were willing to believe advertising.

Advertising has taken the lead in promising and exploiting the new. This was a new world, and one of the advertisements for it appears on the dollar bill on the Great Seal of the United States, which reads novus ordo seclorum, one of the most effective advertising slogans to some out of this country. ‘A new order of the centuries’ – belief in novelty and in the desirability of opening novelty to everybody has been important in our lives throughout our history and especially this century… as expansion and novelty have become essential to our economy, advertising has played an ever-larger role: in the settling of the continent, in the expansion of the economy, and in the building of an American standard of living. Advertising has expressed the optimism, the hyperbole, and the sense of community, the sense of reaching which has been so important a feature of our civilization… the main role of advertising in American civilization came increasingly to be that of persuading and appealing rather than that of educating and informing.

Burgers waren veranderd in consumenten. De schijn was belangrijker geworden dan de werkelijkheid, waarbij de regel gold dat ‘you must write your advertisement to catch damned fools – not college professors,’ aldus een pionier op het gebied van adverteren, de Amerikaan George P. Rowell, die ‘perhaps more than any other man [did] to develop advertising in the 19th century…’

Boorstin benadrukte dat

advertising has become the rhetoric of democracy… advertising has become the heart of the folk culture and even its very prototype. And as we have seen, American advertising shows many characteristics of the folk culture of other societies: repetition, a plain style, hyperbole and tall talk, folk verse, and folk music. Folk culture, wherever it has flourished, has tended to thrive in a limbo between fact and fantasy… how do the expressions of our peculiar folk culture come to us?

They no longer sprout from the earth, from the village, from the farm, or even from the neighborhood or the city. They come to us primarily from enormous centralized self-consciously ‘creative’ (an overused word, for the overuse of which advertising agencies are of no small part responsible) organizations. They come from advertising agencies, networks of newspapers, radio and television, from outdoor-advertising agencies, from the copywriters for ads in the largest-circulation magazines, and so on. These ‘creators’ of folk culture – or pseudo-folk culture – aim at the widest intelligibility and charm and appeal.

Nogmaals Dwight Macdonald:

Since in a mass society people are related not to each other but to some abstract organizing principle, they are often in a state of exhaustion, for this lack of contact is unnatural. So Masscult attempts to provide distraction for the tired businessman – or the tired proletarian.

Macdonald:

With the French Revolution, the masses for the first time made their entrance onto the political stage, and it was not long before they also began to occupy a central position in culture.

Het gevolg was dat

Today, in the United States, the demands of the audience, which has changed from a small body of connaisseurs into a large body of ignoramuses, have become the chief criteria of success… In Masscult (and in its bastard Midcult) everything becomes a commodity, to be mined for $$$$, used for something it is not, from Davy Crockett to Picasso. Once a writer becomes a Name, that is, once he writes a book that for good or bad reasons catches on, the Masscult (or Midcult) mechanism begins to ‘build him up,’ to package him into something that can be sold in identical units in quantity.

Christian Grey is verslavend gevaarlijk.

Dwight Macdonald wees erop dat het uiteindelijke resultaat even ‘slick and cliché in execution as in content’ is. Dit sluit aan op Greenberg's visie in zijn opzienbarende essay Avant-garde and Kitsch (1939) dat de massacultuur predigests art for the spectator and spares him effort, provides him with a shortcut to the pleasures of art that detours what is necessarily difficult in the genuine art,’ omdat het ‘includes the spectator’s reactions in the work itself instead of forcing him to make his own responses.’ Het consumentisme vernietigt uiteindelijk de hogere cultuur,

For the process destroys all values, since value-judgments require discrimination, an ugly word in liberal-democratic American. Masscult is very, very democratic; it refuses to discriminate against or between anything or anybody. All is grist to its mill and all comes out finely ground indeed.

For some reason, objections to the giving-to-the-public-what-it-wants line are often attacked as undemocratic and snobbish. Yet it is precisely because I do believe in the potentialities of ordinary people that I criticize Masscult. For the masses are not people, they are not The Man in the Street or the Average Man, they are not even that figment of liberal condescension, The Common Man. The masses are, rather, man as non-man, that is man in a special relationship to other men that makes it impossible for him to function as man (one of the human functions being the creation and enjoyment of works of art.)

De massamens is onderworpen aan ‘a uniform discipline whose only precedent was the slave socialism” of Egypt.’ Macdonald:

The tendency of modern industrial society, whether in the USA or the USSR, is to transform the individual into the mass man. For the masses are in historical time what a crowd is in space: a large quantity of people unable to express their human qualities because they are related to each other neither as individuals nor as members of a community. In fact, they are not related to each other at all but only to some impersonal, abstract, crystallizing factor… The massa man is a solitary atom, uniform with the millions of other atoms that go to maken up ‘the lonely crowd,’ as David Riesman well calls our society. A community, on the contrary, is a group of individuals linked to each other by concrete interests.

Its morality sinks to the level of the most primitive members – a crowd will commit atrocities that very few of its members would commit as individuals – and its taste to that of the least sensitive and the most ignorant. Yet this collective monstrosity, the masses,’ ‘the public,’ is taken as a human norm by the technicians of Masscult.

This is the dead land
This is cactus land
Here the stone images
Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man's hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Wat de mainstream niet inziet is de ernst van de pathologie, in dit geval: hoe diep het geweld in de Amerikaanse geest verankerd is. In War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, volgens de New York Times Book Review ‘a brilliant, thoughtful, timely and unsettling book’ schrijft de Amerikaanse journalist Chris Hedges;

States at war silence their own authentic and humane culture. When this destruction is well advanced they find the lack of critical and moral restraint useful in the campaign to exterminate the culture of their opponents. By destroying authentic culture – that which allows us to question and examine ourselves and our society – the state erodes the moral fabric. It is replaced with a warped version of reality. The enemy is dehumanized; the universe starkly divided between the forces of ligt and the forces of darkness. The cause is celebrated, often in overt religious forms, as a manifestation of divine or historical will. All is dedicated to promoting and glorifying the myth, the nation, the cause.

En natuurlijk de ‘Amerikaanse Droom,’ oftewel ‘The American Way of Life.’ Hedges:

National symbols – flags, patriotic songs, sentimental dedications – invade and take over cultural space. Art becomes infected with the platitudes of patriotism. More important, the use of a nation’s cultural resources to back up the war effort is essential to mask the contradictions and lies that mount over time in the drive to sustain war. Cultural or national symbols that do not support the crusade are often ruthlessly removed.

Immers:

Masscult offers its customers neither an emotional catharsis nor an aesthetic experience, for these demand effort.

On May 22, The Campaign for America's Future gave a conference on The New Populist Majority. The keynote speaker was Elizabeth Warren. The conference confronted the meme that the US is a "center-right" country.
Most interesting to me was the fact that they obtained poll results from "the 1%." Typically, "upper income" in polling is considered "over $250K/yr" or even "over $150K/yr." Such people are rich compared to most, but they do not have enough money to buy elections with their spare change.
The poll results for this comparison came from the Russell Sage Foundation. "Elites" are defined as at or near "the 1%" in wealth with an average income of $1M/yr or more. The perspectives of this group are compared to responses from other polls such as Pew and Gallup.
The poll results are below the squiggle.
