Minister Asscher's Toneelstukje 4

Seumas Milne in The Revenge of History:

privatisation and competition were promoted as the only route to reform, while working-class living standards stagnated. With communism officially declared dead and class politics banished from the mainstream, only the rise of the anti-corporate movement, spasms of protest against Europe’s political establishment and the first political eruptions in Latin America gave any sense that there might be a political or social alternative at all.

Daarvoor was gemeenschapsgeld nodig waardoor ingrijpende bezuinigingen elders noodzakelijk werden, want

as soon as the immediate threat had passed, pressure to restore the old order and shuffle off the costs of the slump rapidly turned a crisis of the market and the banks into a crisis of the state and public debt.

De vooraanstaande historicus Eric Hobsbawm beschreef de 'crash' van 2008 als een ‘sort of right-wing equivalent to the fall of the Berlin Wall,’ waardoor wereldwijd opnieuw duidelijk werd ‘that capitalism is not the answer, but the question.’ Seumas:

It wasn’t a coincidence that the large majority of economists in the West who predicted a major debt crisis, a housing or credit crash or that the neoliberal model was heading for breakdown were broadly on the left: from Dean Baker and Steve Keen to Ann Pettifor, Paul Krugman, David Harvey and Richard Wolff.

Whether Keynesians, post-Keynesians or Marxists, none accepted the market fundamentalist ideology used to legitimize the vast transfer of wealth and power from labour to capital that took place over thrity years in the name of economic liberalism. All understood that, contrary to neoliberal orthodoxy, deregulated markets don’t tend toward equilibrium but deepen capitalism’s inbuilt tendency to generate systematic crisis.

A Guide To Pseudo-Events in America dat

By harboring, nourishing, and ever enlarging our extravagant expectations we create the demand for illusions with which we deceive ourselves. And which we pay others to make to deceive us.

The making of the illusions which flood our experience has become the business of America, some of its most honest and most necessary and most respectable business. I am thinking not only of advertising and public relations and political rhetoric, but of all the activities which purport to inform and comfort and improve and educate and elevate us: the work of our best journalists, our most enterprising book publishers, our most succesful entertainers, our best guides to world travel, and our most influential leaders in foreign relations. Our every effort to satisfy our extravagant expectations simply makes them more extravagant and makes our illusions more attractive. The story of the making of our illusions – ‘the news behind the news’ – has become the most appealing news of the world.

We tyrannize and frustrate ourselves by expecting more than the world can give us or than we can make of the world. We demand that everyone who talks to us, or writes for us, or takes pictures for us, or makes merchandise for us, should live in our world of extravagant expectations. We expect this even of the peoples of foreign countries. We have become so accustomed to our illusions that we mistake them for reality. We demand them. And we demand that there be always more of them, bigger and better and more vivid. They are the world of our making: the world of the image.

Het neoliberale voorland: One of the biggest myths about the United States is that it's a mostly "middle class" society, with poverty confined to a minority of the population.

The reality is exactly the opposite: The vast majority of people in the United States will experience poverty and economic insecurity for a significant portion of their lives.

A recent Associated Press feature article--relying on data from an exhaustive survey to be published next year by Oxford University Press--has put this in stark terms: Around four out of every five people in the U.S. will endure unemployment, receive food stamps and other forms of government aid, and/or have an income below 150 percent of the official poverty line for at least one year of their lives before age 60.

Maar in de VS, lees ik nu, leeft de helft van de bevolking onder de armoedegrens, en: "There are currently an astonishing 1.65 million American households (with 3.55 million children living in them) where each family member lives on less than $2 a day!"
