Geert Mak. Reizen zonder John. Op zoek naar Amerika. 2012
Any one of the movie houses offered images of America to many more people and at a far greater rate than that at which the library was offering ideas about America.
The motion picture is to real life in America what any image is to the commodity or corporation it stands for. The motion picture, seen abroad, is of course synthetic. It is believable. It is passive. It is concrete. It is simplified, and it is ambiguous, thus the world has been flooded with images of America. The selling of American images abroad is a remunerative business.
Our government operations also have had a large part in spreading these images. Much of our propaganda has been trying to create an image (we always say, of course, a ‘true,’ by which we mean a favorable, image) of the United States…
Images are the pseudo-events of the ethical world. They are at best only pseudo-ideals. They are created and disseminated in order to be reported, to make a ‘favorable impression.’ Not because they are good…
We suffer unwittingly from our own idolatry. The more images we present to people, the more irrelevant and perverse and unattractive they find us. Why? The image, because it invites comparison, is irrelevant. Few people are not sensible enough to see that the image does not relate to them. Our images suggest arrogance: in them we set ourselves up as a mold for the world…
The image – limited, concrete, and oversimplified – inevitably seems narrow and unadaptable. Because it is a projection of ourselves, it declares our conceit.
Daniel J. Boorsin. The Image. A Guide To Pseudo-Events In America. 1961

Mr. Disney, we are returning your Duck. Feathers plucked and weel-roasted. Look inside, you can see the handwriting on the wall, our hands still writing on the wall: Donald, Go Home!
Dorfman en Mattelart. How To Read Donald Duck. Imperialist Ideology in the Disney Comic. 1975
Last June 1975, a shipment of the English edition (van How To Read Donald Duck svh) was seized by the U.S. Customs Bureau as a possible ‘infringement’ on Disney’s copyrights. After a year of deliberation, Customs ruled that importing the book does not constitute ‘piracy.’
Jim Hobberman. Village Voice. 1976

The political, economic, and social consequences have done more than destroy any viable vision of a good society. They undermine the modern public's capacity to think critically, celebrate a narcissistic hyperindividualism that borders on the pathological, destroy social protections and promote a massive shift towards a punitive state that criminalizes the behavior of those bearing the hardships imposed by a survival-of-the-fittest society that takes delight in the suffering of others. How else to account for a criminal justice stacked overwhelmingly against poor minorities, a prison system in which ‘prisoners can be held in solitary confinement for years in small, windowless cells in which they are kept for twenty-three hours of every day…’
American society is awash in a culture of civic illiteracy, cruelty and corruption. For example, major banks such as Barclays and HSBC swindle billions from clients and increase their profit margins by laundering money for terrorist organizations, and no one goes to jail. At the same time, we have the return of debtor prisons for the poor who cannot pay something as trivial as a parking fine. President Obama arbitrarily decides that he can ignore due process and kill American citizens through drone strikes and the American public barely blinks. Civic life collapses into a war zone and yet the dominant media is upset only because it was not invited to witness the golf match between Obama and Tiger Woods…

For sometime now the pseudo-sociologists have been clamoring, in their tortuous jargon, against certain comic books with an international circulation, judged to be disastrous in that they represent vehicles of intellectual colonization for those who are exposed to them… Since clumsy forms of propaganda would not be acceptable to parents and guardians, children are systematically given carefully distilled doses of propaganda from an early age, in order to channel them in later years in Marxist directions.
Juvenile literature has also been exploited so that the parents themselves should be exposed to ideological indoctrination, for which purpose special adult supplements are included. It is illustrative of Marxist procedures that a State enterprise should sponsor initiatives of this kind, with the collaboration of foreign personnel.
The program of the Popular Unity demands that the communications media should be educational in spirit. Now we are discovering that this ‘education’ is no more than the instrument for doctrinaire proselytization imposed from the tenderest years in so insidious and deceitful a form, that many people have no idea of the real purposes being pursued by these publications.

The minority has discovered a powerful help in influencing majorities. It has been possible so to mould the mind of the masses that they will throw their newly gained strength in the desired direction. Propaganda is the executive arm of the invisble government.

In 1947 schreef Bernays een belangrijk artikel voor de Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences, getiteld 'The Engineering of Consent.' Daarin stelde hij dat 'the engineering of consent is the very essence of the democratic proces, the freedom to persuade and suggest.'
has only six years of schooling... [Therefore] democratic leaders must play their part in... engineering consent... Today it is impossible to overestimate the importance of engineering consent; it affects almost every aspect of our daily lives.
The system of domination which the U.S. culture imposes so disastrously abroad, also has deleterious effects at home, not least among those who work for Disney, that is, those who produce his ideology. The circumstances in which Disney products are made ensure that his employees reproduce in their lives and work relations the same system of exploitation to which they, as well as the consumer, are subject…
For his workers to express solidarity against him was a subversion of his legitimate authority. When members of the Disney studio acted to join an AFL-CIO affiliated union, he fired them and accused them of being Communist or Communist sympathisers. Later, in the McCarthy period, he cooperated with the FBI and HUAC (House Unamerican Acitivities Committee) in the prosecution of an ex-employee for ‘Communism.’
Like the natives and the nephews in the comics, Disney workers must surrender to the millionaire Uncle Scrooge McDisney their treasures – the surplus value of their physical and mental resources…
Among Disney’s numerous wartime propaganda films, the most controversial and in many ways the most important was Victory Through Air Power. Undertaken on Disney’s own initiative, this was designed to support Major Alexander Seversky’s theory of the ‘effectiveness’ (that is damage-to-cost ratio) of strategic bombing, including that of population centers. It would be unfair to project back onto Disney our own guilt over Dresden and Hiroshima, but it is noteworthy that even at the time a film critic was shocked by Disney’s ‘gay dreams of holocaust.’ And it is consistent that the maker of such a film should later give active and financial support to some noted proponents of massive strategic and terror bombing of Vietnam, such as Goldwater and Reagan. Disney’s support for Goldwater in 1964 was more than the public gesture of a wealthy conservative; he went so far as to wear a Goldwater button while being invested by Johnson with the President’s Medal of Freedom. In the 1959 presidential campaign, he was arrogant enough to bully his employees to give money to the Nixon campaign fund, whether they were Republicans or not.
Goldwater fought in 1971 to stop US funding of the United Nations after the People's Republic of China was admitted to the organization. He said:
‘I suggested on the floor of the Senate today that we stop all funds for the United Nations. Now, what that'll do to the United Nations, I don't know. I have a hunch it would cause them to fold up, which would make me very happy at this particular point. I think if this happens, they can well move their headquarters to Peking or Moscow and get 'em out of this country’ […]
In a May 1964 speech, Goldwater suggested that nuclear weapons should be treated more like conventional weapons and used in Vietnam, specifically that they should have been used at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 to defoliate trees…
He also advocated that field commanders in Vietnam and Europe should be given the authority to use tactical nuclear weapons (which he called ‘small conventional nuclear weapons’) without presidential confirmation.

It was only after Roosevelt saw Victory Through Air Power that our country made the commitment to long range bombing’:
It is yet another example how skillfully the Disney-artists adapted their visual story telling techniques to a deadly serious purpose and how successful they were.
In the introductory history of aviation there is room for humor but even in the later sections of the film there is tremendous creativity on the staging of battle scenes and explosions to the use of visual metaphors…
Why was it necessary to drop the nuclear bomb if LeMay was burning up Japan? And he went on from Tokyo to firebomb other cities. 58% of Yokohama. Yokohama is roughly the size of Cleveland. 58% of Cleveland destroyed. Tokyo is roughly the size of New York. 51% percent of New York destroyed. 99% of the equivalent of Chattanooga, which was Toyama. 40% of the equivalent of Los Angeles, which was Nagoya. This was all done before the dropping of the nuclear bomb, which by the way was dropped by LeMay's command. Proportionality should be a guideline in war. Killing 50% to 90% of the people of 67 Japanese cities and then bombing them with two nuclear bombs is not proportional, in the minds of some people, to the objectives we were trying to achieve…
LeMay said, ‘If we'd lost the war, we'd all have been prosecuted as war criminals.’ And I think he's right. He, and I'd say I, were behaving as war criminals. LeMay recognized that what he was doing would be thought immoral if his side had lost. But what makes it immoral if you lose and not immoral if you win?

There's A Thrill In The Air!'

Zo. Ik ben het weer even kwijt.

Groeten, Ben
