Oude barakken Westerbork afgebrand
Twee houten barakken die vroeger in Kamp Westerbork stonden, zijn door brand verwoest. De barakken stonden sinds 1957 in Veendam. Daar werden ze gebruikt als schuur. De oorzaak van de brand is nog onbekend.
In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden joden in Kamp Westerbork bijeengebracht en van daaruit naar concentratiekampen vervoerd. De barakken werden in de jaren 50 verkocht.
De barakken zouden teruggaan naar Kamp Westerbork. Daar zouden ze weer worden samengevoegd tot één barak, zoals het in de oorlog was. In 1944 heeft Anne Frank in de barak batterijen gedemonteerd.
Welke historie is van belang om hier te vermelden? 1. Westerbork werd gebruikt als doorvoerkamp voor joden naar de vernietigingskampen. 2. Anne Frank heeft er ook gezeten.
Welke historie niet van belang is, is dat Nederland, om de relatie met nazi-Duitsland goed te houden, enkele weken na de Kristallnacht de grenzen sloten voor joodse vluchtelingen, en deze kampen heeft gebouwd als dienst voor nazi-Duitsland. Daarnaast was het, zoals de NOS beweert, niet alleen een kamp voor joden, maar ook voor zigeuners, homoseksuelen, communisten en (andere) verzetsmensen.

Aanvankelijk zou dat kamp bij Elspeet worden gebouwd. Maar Koningin Wilhelmina vond de afstand van twaalf kilometer tot haar zomerverblijf paleis Het Loo veel te weinig. Ook de ANWB was tegen, want de gehele Veluwe moest beschikbaar blijven voor vakantiegangers. Daarom werd tenslotte gekozen voor het Amerveld op de Drentse heide bij Hooghalen, tien kilometer ten noorden van het dorp Westerbork. In augustus 1939 werden hier door arbeiders in de werkverschaffing de eerste barakken gebouwd van Centraal Vluchtelingenkamp Westerbork.
Op 9 oktober arriveerden de eerste 22 bewoners. Zij waren afkomstig uit een groep van ruim negenhonderd Duitse joden die tevergeefs hadden geprobeerd met het Duitse schip St Louis van Hamburg naar Cuba te vluchten.
En na de oorlog 'mochten' de Molukkers in Westerbork 'wonen'. In 1970 vertrokken de laatste gezinnen. Ik heb vroeger een aantal Molukse families gekend. Ik heb de verhalen gehoord van ouders en grootouders. Ze werden mijns inziens als Untermenschen behandeld. Ook een staaltje ongewenste Nederlandse geschiedenis.

Shiva is the traditional seven-day period of mourning which follows a Jewish funeral. It takes place in the home of the closest surviving relative, because this is where the spirit of the recently departed is traditionally believed to be present. So where in the world were we as a people, go to sit shiva for the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust? It seems that the state of Israel was destined to become the designated "shiva house" for the Holocaust. And based upon a kind of literalistic biblical perspective, it would appear to make a certain intuitive sense. It could serve as the spiritual and ancestral home for those who died in the death camps in Europe. It may even be seen by many as G-d's compensation for "allowing" the Holocaust to happen, a kind of divine reconciliation.
However, this formal period of mourning is only the first step in the process of healing and growth. So why haven't we moved on? Why has the "shiva house" become a living, breathing war machine, fueled on self-destructive fear and violence? Why the dehumanizing oppression of a people who did not even participate in the Jewish genocide? How can this "House of Israel" continually try to justify crimes against humanity while still claiming victimhood? Why does it expect the rest of the world to feel perpetual empathy, when it refuses to hear the cries of anguish and outrage echoing from within its own walls and throughout the planet?
