The Empire 375

"Is Who Becomes the Next President All That Matters?
By Danny Schechter
AlterNet

Berlin - I know. I know. How this is the most important election in history, and why the next occupant of the White House will not only be answering the red phone at 3 a.m. but possibly be saving these not always United States from the decline that even Time magazine has announced the country is facing.
Yet, as I travel outside the country, I can’t help but feel, or is it fear, that this logic leaves out some rather important considerations.
Like the fact that the United States cannot unilaterally impose its will on the world anymore as our dollar falls and our credibility falls with it. Even a strategy of negotiation as opposed to confrontation is not a recipe for success because in a multipolar world, other countries and power blocs like the Russians, the Chinese, the EU, the Persian Gulf and OPEC have their own interests. They will listen to our proposals but may reject them if they are at variance with their own needs.
We just don’t have the power to impose our will even as we still suffer from "the USA is No. 1" syndrome and think that we can kick ass and take names if anyone stands in our way.
Whoever becomes president may not have the power he or she assumes goes with the office. (In fact, after the fact, in their memoirs, most presidents complain they often felt powerless, besieged by lobbyists, party factions and reticent bureaucrats at every turn. They see themselves constrained by institutional obstacles at every turn.)
In many ways, Mao was right, the occupant of the oval office is a paper tiger.
In this new world, if we want others to do our bidding, we can’t threaten to obliterate them or strut around like Mighty Mouse when so many in the world see us as the Mouse that Roared.
So many of our problems today are global and shared by others. Globalization has assured that. We are all impacted by global threats like climate change, escalating food prices, world hunger, endemic poverty and pandemic disease that the White House can’t wave a magic wand to cure. Sadly, most Americans are not educated about these issues, and the press downplays them.
Even when we cause problems, like the mortgage collapse, markets worldwide feel the pain in an internationally entangled financial system where we are dependent on monies from China. Meanwhile, others invest in the United States to keep their own profits up and compete with our companies on our home ground.
Sure, we are a militarily powerful but apparently not powerful or smart enough to subdue Iraq or Afghanistan after five years. Our warriors on terror have yet to capture Bin Laden or even neutralize the Taliban. The truth is the Democratic candidates don’t think they can tell the military what to do and so have withdrawal plans that will take years. That’s the reality.
The military industrial complex often has a mind of its own
And so does Wall Street, which won’t take marching orders from any president. Both Clinton and Bush turned to Goldman Sachs to run the Treasury, and it’s not clear if their former execs were ambassadors to The Street or from the Street. Financial power trumps political power in a country dominated by a corporate system.
Who can impose an excess profits tax on Big Oil? Who will dare?''

Email artikel: Print artikel: Reacties: 3
14 mei, 2008 Marcel Vreemans

Sakhnin 13-05-2008

Geachte EO redactie,

Trees Kosterman, Sakhnin'

'Hamas Condemns the Holocaust

We are not engaged in a religious conflict with Jews; this is a political struggle to free ourselves from occupation and oppression
By Bassem Naeem12/05/08
"The Guardian" -- -

As the Palestinian people prepare to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Nakba ("catastrophe") - the dispossession and expulsion of most of our people from our land - those remaining in Palestine face escalating aggression, killings, imprisonment, ethnic cleansing and siege. But instead of support and solidarity from the western media, we face frequent attempts to defend the indefensible or turn fire on the Palestinians themselves. One recent approach, which seems to be part of the wider attempt to isolate the elected Palestinian leadership, is to portray Hamas and the population of the Gaza strip as motivated by anti-Jewish sentiment, rather than a hostility to Zionist occupation and domination of our land. A recent front page article in the International Herald Tribune followed this line, as did an article for Cif about an item broadcast on the al-Aqsa satellite TV channnel about the Nazi Holocaust. In fact, the al-Aqsa Channel is an independent media institution that often does not express the views of the Palestinian government headed by Ismail Haniyeh or of the Hamas movement. The channel regularly gives Palestinians of different convictions the chance to express views that are not shared by the Palestinian government or the Hamas movement. In the case of the opinion expressed on al-Aqsa TV by Amin Dabbur, it is his alone and he is solely responsible for it.It is rather surprising to us that so little attention, if any, is given by the western media to what is regularly broadcast or written in the Israeli media by politicians and writers demanding the total uprooting or "transfer" of the Palestinian people from their land. The Israeli media and pro-Israel western press are full of views that deny or seek to excuse well-established facts of history including the Nakba of 1948 and the massacres perpetrated then by the Haganah, the Irgun and LEHI with the objective of forcing a mass dispossession of the Palestinians. But it should be made clear that neither Hamas nor the Palestinian government in Gaza denies the Nazi Holocaust. The Holocaust was not only a crime against humanity but one of the most abhorrent crimes in modern history. We condemn it as we condemn every abuse of humanity and all forms of discrimination on the basis of religion, race, gender or nationality.'

'Four Days That Changed The Middle East
By Rami G. KhouriDaily Star staff
12/05/08 "Daily Star " -- --

Events in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon continue to move erratically, with simultaneous gestures of political compromise and armed clashes that have left 46 dead in the past week. The consequences of what has happened in the past week may portend an extraordinary but constructive new development: the possible emergence of the first American-Iranian joint political governance system in the Arab world. Maybe. If Lebanon shifts from street clashes to the hoped-for political compromise through a renewed national dialogue process, it will have a national unity government whose two factions receive arms, training, funds and political support from both the United States and Iran. Should this happen, an unspoken American-Iranian political condominium in Lebanon could prove to be key to power-sharing and stability in other parts of the region, such as Palestine, Iraq and other hot spots. This would also mark a huge defeat for the United States and its failed diplomatic approach that seeks to confront, battle and crush the Islamist-nationalists throughout the region. The brief, isolated, but intense clashes that occurred in the four days between Wednesday and Sunday threatened a total, Iraq-like collapse of Lebanon, with the Hizbullah-led alliance controlling power in the capital Beirut and other critical areas. The frantic pace of political and street action comprised and clarified four noteworthy developments, whose implications for the rest of the Middle East could be momentous:1. When the government decided to challenge Hizbullah on Tuesday by announcing it was sacking the Shiite army general in charge of airport security and dismantling Hizbullah's underground security telecommunications network, Hizbullah saw this as the first serious attempt by the government to try and disarm it. Hizbullah immediately challenged the government, warned it against these decisions, and made a show of force to protect its security and telecommunications system. When street clashes started in several parts of Beirut, the Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hizbullah-led opposition alliance quickly and roundly asserted its dominance over the US- and Saudi-backed government alliance. Put to the test, the new balance of power in Lebanon affirmed itself on the street for the first time in less than 24 hours. '

'Weapons Were Not Made In Iran After All
CASMII Press Release
12/05/08 "ICH" -- - In a sharp reversal of its longstanding accusations against Iran arming militants in Iraq , the US military has made an unprecedented albeit quiet confession: the weapons they had recently found in Iraq were not made in Iran at all.

According to a report by the LA Times correspondent Tina Susman in Baghdad: "A plan to show some alleged Iranian-supplied explosives to journalists last week in Karbala and then destroy them was cancelled after the United States realized none of them was from Iran. A U.S. military spokesman attributed the confusion to a misunderstanding that emerged after an Iraqi Army general in Karbala erroneously reported the items were of Iranian origin. When U.S. explosives experts went to investigate, they discovered they were not Iranian after all."

The US, which until two weeks ago had never provided any proof for its allegations, finally handed over its "evidence" of the Iranian origin of these weapons to the Iraqi government. Last week, an Iraqi delegation to Iran presented the US "evidence" to Iranian officials. According to Al-Abadi, a parliament member from the ruling United Iraqi Alliance who was on the delegation, the Iranian officials totally refuted "training, financing and arming" militant groups in Iraq . Consequently the Iraqi government announced that there is no hard evidence against Iran.

In another extraordinary event this week, the US spokesman in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Kevin Bergner, for the first time did not blame Iran for the violence in Iraq and in fact did not make any reference to Iran at all in his introductory remarks to the world media on Wednesday when he described the large arsenal of weapons found by Iraqi forces in Karbala.

In contrast, the Pentagon in August 2007 admitted that it had lost track of a third of the weapons distributed to the Iraqi security forces in 2004/2005. The 190,000 assault rifles and pistols roam free in Iraqi streets today.

In the past year, the US leaders have been relentless in propagating their charges of Iranian meddling and fomenting violence in Iraq and since the release of the key judgments of the US National Intelligence Estimate in December that Iran does not have a nuclear weaponisation programme, these accusations have sharply intensified.

The US charges of Iranian interference in Iraq too have now collapsed. Any threat of military strike against Iran is in violation of the UN charter and the IAEA's continued supervision on Iran's uranium enrichment facilities means there is no justification for sanctions.

CASMII calls on the US to change course and enter into comprehensive and unconditional negotiations with Iran.

"Why is this man in the White House? The majority of Americans did not vote for him. Why is he there? And I tell you this morning that he's in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this": Lt Gen William Boykin, speaking of G. W. Bush, New York Times, 17 October 2003

="God gave the savior to the German people. We have faith, deep and unshakeable faith, that he was sent to us by God to save Germany." Hermann Goering, speaking of Hitler

="A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side": Aristotle

="If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier - just so long as I'm the dictator". George W. Bush, 18 December 2000

'Nurit Peled-Elhanan is an Israeli peace activist, professor at Hebrew University, and is among the founders of the Bereaved Families for Peace. After the death of Elhanan's 13 year-old daughter in 1997, she became an outspoken critic of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.

Nurit Peled-Elhanan 7.5.2008 Amsterdam

I would like to dedicate my words today to a young woman of thirty years old Miasar Abu Maatak, and to her children Rudeina and Hana, ages 3 and 6, to her son Salah age 4 and to her baby Musaab, age 15 months who were all killed on the 28.4.2008 by Israeli soldiers as they were eating in their home yard in Gaza. Four children and their mother have joined the evergrowing underground kingdom of dead children where my own little girl lies alongside Palestinian children in perfect equality.
Israel said it was sorry – as if it was a wrong move in a ping-pong game - but immediately blamed the Hamas, which was compared to Nazis. Foreign minister Zipi Livni said to the Jerusalem Post:
“I would expect that when Israeli civilians are harmed by deliberate Palestinian terrorism, people won't make a comparison between them and Palestinian civilians that are harmed during Israel's defense operations."
And the murderers? What about them? Do they know they have committed a crime? Do they toss and turn in their beds at night? Are they tormented by images of the small bodies that convulse and fall under their rifles, bombs and shells? Probably not. We know of no case in which an Israeli or any other soldier turned himself in and expressed remorse for his actions. This is the biggest success of Israeli education: the distinction between blood and blood, between a Jewish dead child and an Arab dead child, and the inculcating of the conviction that the murder of Palestinians and their children is not a crime. Everyone who enlists in the Israeli army knows that and is being prepared for that in 12 years of schooling.
However, no child is born evil. Not even Israeli children. The young men who killed the Al-Maatak family, like those who invaded the Centre for Remedial Education in Gaza and wrecked it to pieces, those who torture people in the checkpoints and order old women to undress at gun point, who harass and destroy and spread terror around them, were not born evil. They are all the product of education .
The cruelty that cannot be expressed in words, the orderly, ingenious abuse, that the best Jewish brains have been put to work planning and perfecting, did not emerge from a void. It is the fruit of systematic, deep, total education.Israel's children are educated within an uncompromisingly racist discourse. A racist discourse that does not stop at checkpoints, but governs all human relations in this country. Israel's children are educated to see in the evil that they are destined to implement immediately after the end of their schooling, a necessity of the reality in which they are called to fulfill their roles. For sixty years now, racism, heterophobia and megalomania have dictated our lives. Sixty years during which Israeli children are educated in racism of the type that has been unknown in the civilized world for decades. Sixty years during which they have learned to hate the neighbours just because they are neighbours, to fear them without knowing them, to equate them with Nazis, to see a quarter of the citizens of the State as a demographic danger and an enemy within, and to relate to the residents of the ghettos created by the policy of occupation as a problem that must be 'solved'. Only sixty years ago Jews were residents of ghettos and seen in the eyes of their oppressors as a problem that needed to be solved. Only sixty years ago the Jews were enclosed behind ugly concrete and electrified walls topped with watchtowers manned by erect armed figures, and deprived of the ability to make a living or to raise their children with dignity. Only sixty years ago racism exacted its price from the Jewish people. Today racism rules in the Jewish state, tramples people’s dignity underfoot and deprives them of liberty, condemns all of us to lives of hell. For forty years now the Jewish head has unceasingly been bowed in worship of racism while the Jewish mind is devising the most creative ways to devastate and demolish and destroy the holy land which has become a wasteland. That is what remains of the Jewish genius, once it becomes Israeli. Jewish compassion, Jewish mercy, Jewish cosmopolitan spirit, love of humanity and respect for the other have been long forgotten. Their place was claimed by hate and suspicion and racism. It was only racism that motivated the soldiers to kill innocent children and their parents in Gaza. It is only racism that motivates the drivers of bulldozers to demolish houses on top of their occupants, to destroy vineyards and fields, to uproot centuries-old olive trees. Only racism can invent roads on which circulation is classified on the basis of race, and it is only racism that motivates our children to humiliate women who could be their mothers and to abuse old people at the evil checkpoints, to strike young people their own age who, like them, want to drive with their families to bathe in the sea, and to look on impassively as women give birth on the road. It is only pure racism that motivates our best pilots to drop one-ton bombs on residential buildings in Gaza and it is only racism that permits those criminals to sleep well at night.

This racism has erected for itself a monument in its own image – the monument of an ugly, rigid, menacing and invasive concrete wall. A monument that proclaims to the whole world the banishment of shame and compassion from the holy land. Because racism eliminates shame. This wall is our wall of shame, it is testimony to the fact that we have turned from being a light unto the nations to “an object of disgrace to the nations and a mockery to all the countries.” **

And yet we succeed in packing endless daily suffering, hunger, malnutrition, children’s trauma, disablement, orphanhood and bereavement into one alienating word: “politics”?

And yet our children continue to strut and swagger in the uniforms of brutality that they wear when they serve in the army of slaughter and destruction?

And yet all the splendid institutions of the world stand aside and cannot do a thing to save one child from death or to remove one concrete block from the wall of shame? And yet none of the peace and human rights organizations is able to stop the jeeps of the Border Guards that come to terrify schoolchildren and to kill them, or to demolish houses on top of their occupants, to rescue one olive tree from destruction or one schoolgirl who lost her way to school and found herself in the gunsights of the soldiers of the Occupation?

The reason for this success is that the State of Israel is able to silence and paralyze the entire world because there was a Holocaust. The State of Israel has acquired a permit to abuse an entire nation because there is anti-Semitism. The State of Israel is bringing existential disaster – economic, social and human, on its citizens and on its subjects and no one dares to stop it because once there was Hitler. And all that while the survivors of the Holocaust are suffering the ignominy of hunger in the Jewish democracy of Israel.

This evening I want to appeal to you for help in ridding Israel of the shame. To explain to the world that if it wants to rescue the people of Israel and the Palestinian people from the imminent holocaust that threatens all of us it is necessary to condemn the policy of occupation, the dominion of death must be stopped in its tracks.
The time has come for us to stop handing our children over to an educational establishment that plants in them false and racist values and teaches them that their contribution to society is summed up in the abuse and killing of other people’s children. The time has come for us to reveal to them that the local population of the world is not divided into good Jews and Anti-Semitic non-Jews as is written in their school-books, but into human beings who want to live in peace and quiet in spite of everything, and to those who crave for war and bloodshed, and that both groups include Jews and non-Jews. Because Israel's children are educated to see international resolutions, laws and orders as empty utterances that do not apply to us because they were devised by non-Jews. Today, while the entire civilized world enjoys slandering and smearing the Palestinian education system, there is no school-book in Israel that presents a picture of a Palestinian as a modern ordinary human being. The only representations of Palestinian citizens and non-citizens are Primitive farmers or nomads – usually in the form of a caricature - refugees that go from nowhere to nowhere, and face-covered terrorists. There is no school-book in Israel that presents a map that shows the true borders of the State. Israel's children learn that the real geographical entity that belongs to us is the biblical promised Land of Israel, which includes parts of Jordan and Lebanon and of which the State of Israel is only a small and temporary part. There is no school-book in Israel in which the word “occupation” appears. Our children are conscripted into the army of occupation without knowing the place in which they are living and without knowing its history and its people. Israel's children know more about Europe their imagined homeland and the heart's desire of the rulers of the country than they do about the Middle East in which they live and from which more than half of the Israeli population derives its origins. Jewish children in the State of Israel are educated to legitimate past and present massacres of Palestinian in the name of the Jewish Democratic state and its vital need to keep a Jewish majority.
They join the army imbued with hate and fear. Our children are educated to see everyone who is not Jewish as the Goy, the Other, who generation after generation seeks to destroy us. This is not education, this is mind infection. And infected minds are very easy to manipulate and therefore very convenient for the military establishment which turns our children into monsters.

Therefore the only way to prevent our children from becoming tools in the hands of the machine of destruction is to teach them the real history of their region, to draw for them its real borders, to help them to know the neighbours, their culture, their customs, their courtesy, their beauty and their rights on the land where they live and lived for many generations before the Zionist Pioneers arrived at the Promised Land of Israel. And above all to teach them not to submit to the State, not to respect its authority, because the State is ruled by petty thieves and base opportunists who do not control their impulses even in the most dire times and run the country according to the laws of the Mafia. You killed one of mine - I’ll kill a hundred of yours. You threw a home-made bomb at me - I’ll drop on you a hundred of the most elaborate and destructive bombs in the world that will leave no trace of you or your family or your neighbours. You burned one of my cars so I’ll burn one of your cities. That is the logic of the criminal world.
This is the logic inculcated to Israeli children in their schools.
This evening we must think about those who are condemned to death in the next year, and of those who are condemned to fall into crime under the cover of the law and the uniform. We must rescue all of them. We must teach all of them not to obey orders that, even if they are legal according to the race laws of this State, are manifestly inhuman
Some young people like Israeli refusniks such as 'Combatants for Peace' have managed to free theselves from the virus of racism, but most of our mind infected children would not be free of the grip of those viruses until they find their final rest in the evergrowing, underground kingdom of dead children . Only there will they realize that is doesn’t matter whether their head was bare or not in a synagogue or a church or a mosque, whether they were circumcised or not, whether they pronounced forbidden words, ate pig or cow or whether they had a hot chocolate after their salami pizza just before they were blown up by someone who didn't. And when these children die for the profits of somebody else their parents bear it with dignity and pride, as they were taught, put their dead children's photographs on the mantelpiece and sigh: He was so handsome in uniform. It is time to tell these parents that no-one is handsome in the uniform of brutality. It is time to tell them uniforms and ranks and medals have become ugly. Tell them their dignity and pride are misplaced.
It is time to tell Jewish people that the only way to discourage anti-Semitism is by condemning the only government in the world who deliberately sends young Jewish boys and girls to their certain death in unnecessary wars and who persecutes to the point of genocide a whole Semitic nation, explain to them that it is the Jewish government and the actions of its army, not some primordial hatred for the Jewish race, which are the reasons for the invention of the new sign we often see in pro-Palestinian demonstration, where the Star of David is equated with the swastika.
It is a terribly hard task for people who were educated in Israel or in the USA or in Holland, to admit we were raised on false racist values. On heterophobia and racism. The only thing that can enhance such a change of spirit is the constant image of the mutilated small bodies of the victims of these values .Nevertheless, we must all ask our children's forgiveness for not being more alert, for not fighting sooner to keep our promises for a better world, and for letting them be the victims of the horrible, mental infection we are all suffering from. Our crying need today is to expose this racist system of education and to demand its revision. Unless we do that, very soon there will be nothing else to say, nothing else to write, nothing else to hear except for the muted cries of dead children.
"And I, my heart is dead, no longer is there prayeron my lips;
All strength is gone, andhope is no more.
Until when,
How much longer,
Until when?"
(Haim Nahman Bialik 1903)'

The Palestinian Nakba on the ground
On this day, 1948
Jaffa, the largest city in Palestine, was occupied and its inhabitants forced to leave.
In Gaza, the people of Beit Daras, Sawafir as-Samaliah, Betanyah, Bashit, and Nebi Rubin were expelled with around 7,000 people fleeing the villages. Only a few remained behind.
Zionist forces also carried out attacks in al-Ramla district. In Abu Shusha, the 870 villagers fled from mortar attacks. The village was subsequently occupied and its buildings dynamited.
Nakba Today
Jaffa (The Bride of the Sea) was Palestine's largest and most vibrant metropolis. Its centrality to the Arab Palestinian society and economy forced the UN to include it in the proposed Arab state in the 1947 partition plan. This, however, did not stop 5,000 Zionist troops from besieging the city for three months leading up to Israel's declaration of statehood. The poorly armed and untrained defenders of Jaffa included tens of international volunteers who came to defend Palestine, notably from Yugoslavia. The majority of Jaffa's inhabitants were pushed into the sea, forced to flee using boats and ending up in other Palestinian coastal cities like Gaza, or further in Egypt and Lebanon. Soon after its occupation on this day (13 May) in 1948, Zionist forces blew up and bulldozed three-quarters of Jaffa's Arab section. The remaining Arab areas were officially confiscated by Israel, and the property was transferred to Israel's public housing organization, Amidar. Since then, these areas (the poorest in the Jaffa-Tel-Aviv municipality) have experienced soaring property prices. Amidar now hopes to reap in the profits of the high prices by evicting the remaining rightful Palestinian owners of the homes. Through Amidar, Israel also threatens to sell off most of the land of the historic Tasso cemetery in Jaffa. The result is an escalation of the ongoing Israeli practice of Judaizing and de-Arabizing Jaffa, Palestine's economic and cultural capital just sixty years ago.

'Oil prices extend record run, break 126 dollars
(Agencies)
Updated: 2008-05-10 10:09

NEW YORK - Oil prices briefly surged to a record high above 126 dollars on Friday, driven into uncharted territory by speculators trying to take advantage of global supply concerns, analysts said.

Traders work the Crude Oil trading pit at the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday, May 9, 2008, as oil rose above $126 a barrel for the first time Friday. [Agencies]

Oil prices have rocketed to fresh record highs every day this week in reaction to unrest in key producer Nigeria and other ongoing supply worries.

New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for June delivery, spiked as high as 126.25 dollars in intra day trading before closing at 125.96 dollars, marking a sharp gain of 2.27 dollars from Thursday's closing value.

In London, Brent crude oil briefly hit an all-time peak of 125.90 dollars. The contract subsequently settled up a strong 2.56 dollars at 125.40 dollars.

Sucden analyst Michael Davies said there was "keen interest in the oil market by the (investment) funds, which are currently being attracted by oil's rapid price appreciation this year.

"This probably explains the move higher over the last few days," he said.

World oil prices have rocketed 25 percent since the start of 2008 and have doubled in the past 12 months from around 62 dollars.

Oil values vaulted above the psychological 100-dollar mark in January and have since jumped above 120 dollars.'

De Israelische Terreur 361

'N I E U W S B R I E F 05/2008

EDITORIAL

Beste lezer,

De groep mensenrechtenorganisaties waarschuwt: "We express concern and outrage at the systematic dismantling of the Gaza Strip's vital systems by preventing the residents of Gaza, a territory under Israel's occupation, from obtaining the fuel they need to generate electricity, power hospitals, run transportation, pump water and sewage, and provide for basic social and economic needs."

PCATI: Psychische marteling in Israël neemt toe

CAMPAGNE

Filmfestival Witnessed from Within

Het filmfestival Witnessed from Within biedt hen een podium.

Zingen
Loudspeaker
“The checkpoint is welcome home,” zei een Palestijnse eens tegen me, ironisch.

"…Namely the State of Israel"
By Uri Avnery
EVERY TIME I hear the voice of David Ben-Gurion uttering the words "Therefore we are gathered here…" I think of Issar Barsky, a charming youngster, the little brother of a girl-friend of mine. The last time we met was in front of the dining hall of Kibbutz Hulda, on Friday, May 14, 1948.
In the coming night my company was to attack al-Qubab, an Arab village on the road to Jerusalem, east of Ramle. We were busy with preparations. I was cleaning my Czech-made rifle, when somebody came and told us that Ben-Gurion was just making a speech about the founding of the state.

Manifest Destiny?
By Uri Avnery
NEXT MONTH, Israel will celebrate its 60th anniversary. The government is working feverishly to make this day into an occasion of joy and jubilation. While serious problems are crying out for funds, some 40 million dollars have been allocated to this aim.
But the nation is in no mood for celebrations. It is gloomy.
From all directions the government is blamed for this gloom. "They have no agenda" is the refrain, "Their only concern is their own survival." (The word "agenda", with its English pronunciation, is now fashionable in Israeli political circles, pushing aside a perfectly adequate Hebrew word.)

Vice PM: Ofra settlement homes built on private Palestinian land
By Akiva Eldar
All 450 homes in Ofra, the "mother of settlements" in Samaria, were built on privately owned Palestinian land, Vice Premier Haim Ramon said during a session at the Knesset State Control Committee two months ago.
This is the first time such a senior government source has admitted in an official forum that the first settlement in Samaria was built on private Palestinian land.
In response to an inquiry by Haaretz, Ramon's office said the vice premier's statements were made based on information from the defense establishment.

Tony Blair and Getting to the Endgame in Palestine
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has many positive attributes, including great charm. He will need all his skills to address the bewildering range of global tasks that he has taken on since being shoehorned out of office by his dour successor, Gordon Brown.
His initial daytime job, after running Britain, was to bring peace to the Middle East by helping establish the governing institutions of a Palestinian state.
Since then, Blair has become an adviser to banks (which need all the advice they can get these days), is touring the world to promote a sensible policy on global warming and climate change, has created a foundation to help bridge the divide between different faiths, and will lecture on religion at Yale. All that is left is to restore the fortunes of England's national football and cricket teams. Perhaps he could fit that in on weekends.

In the Haifa district, the villages of Bureika, Um al-Shauf, Auzeiba and Sabbarin were occupied by Zionist forces. In Sabbarin, 20 people were killed as they fled their homes under fire. Those who did not flee were held behind barbed wire fences for a few days and later were forcefully transferred to Umm al-Fahm.
Beisan was occupied today and out of 5,000 inhabitants, only 1,500 remained. Today there is no sizeable Palestine population in the city. Other villages in the area, al-Sakhina and Sirin, were depopulated. Nakba Today Kafr Bir’im (Upper Galilee) On 29 October 1948, Israel began a new military campaign that was code-named “Hiram” and whose goal was to occupy Arab villages in the Upper Galilee. According to Israeli estimates, there were 50,000 to 60,000 Palestinians in this area before the operation, and only 12,000 to 15,000 remaining afterwards; among those forced out were the 1,050 villagers of Kafr Bir’im. The Israeli officer responsible for the operation had promised the villagers that they would be allowed to return after a two week period, but the promise was never fulfilled.Three months after the villagers were moved out, Israeli patrols arrested 65 people working in the area. When the villagers realised that the Israeli military authorities were not going to fulfill their promise, they launched a protracted legal and political battle to return to their land, taking their case to the Israeli Supreme Court and the Knesset. In January 1952, the court issued a decision in which it recognised the villagers’ right to return to their village with the permission of the military governor. This permission has never been granted. In an attempt to ensure that Bir’im’s villagers would not return, the Israeli air force bombed the village in 1953, destroying all its buildings except the church and school. Since 1965, site of the village has been turned into an Israeli National Park.
