'A sacred right
The west was taken in by the Zionist propaganda for several decades, but what is more natural than a Palestinian returning home?
By Salman Abu-Sitta
03/30/07 "Guardian" Why should I, a Jew from north London, be permitted to take up Israeli citizenship, when that right is denied to a Palestinian who languishes in a refugee camp in Lebanon? Especially when I acknowledge that a large majority of those that left in 1948 were ethnically cleansed by Israeli forces.
Those are the words of Alex Stein, writing for Comment is free last week. A commendable admission of injustice to Palestinians, you would say. But then he derives conclusions that are contrary to this premise; that the right of a Palestinian to return to his home is neither sacred, legal nor possible.
This split-personality theme has been infamously adopted by Benny Morris who pored over hundreds of declassified Israeli files. Morris confirmed in minute detail that, in 1948, Israeli invasion forces commit…

'Democracy is for the rich
By Kevin Barr "Fiji Times"

Democracy is a system of government where the political power rests with the nation's population either directly or through elected representatives. It is government of the people, for the people, by the people. From this one should be able to infer that the purpose of democracy is to build a just society where the interests of all the people are cared for rich and poor, men and women, minorities as well as the majority and the economy works for the benefit of all. Democracy should be about the ordering of society to bring about justice for all. If it does not work for the common good then there is something seriously wrong. The United States, in particular, has been a staunch promoter of democracy and has fought to have democracy entrenched throughout the world. Yet some writers have raised a number of important questions about the nature of US democracy. For example, why is it that only those from wealthy backgrounds…

Robert Fisk 31

'Robert Fisk on Shakespeare and war Shakespeare could have been writing about Iraq or Afghanistan, his scenes of battle were so prescient.
Robert Fisk dissects the Bard's attitude to conflict - and describes how relevant he has found it to be today.

Poor old Bardolph. The common soldier, the Poor Bloody Infantry, the GI Joe of Agincourt, survives Henry IV, only to end up on the end of a rope after he's avoided filling up the breach at Harfleur with his corpse. Henry V is his undoing - in every sense of the word - when he robs a French church. He must be executed, hanged, "pour encourager les autres". "Bardolph," laments his friend Pistol to Fluellen, "a soldier firm and sound of heart, /...hanged must a' be /A damned death! "Let gallows gape for dog, let man go free, / And let not hemp his wind-pipe suffocate: / But Exeter hath given the doom of death... / Therefore go speak, the duke will hear thy voice; / And let not Bardolph's vital t…

'Why George Bush is Insane By Harold Pinter "Assassinated Press " "Earlier this year I had a major operation for cancer. The operation and its after-effects were something of a nightmare. I felt I was a man unable to swim bobbing about under water in a deep dark endless ocean. But I did not drown and I am very glad to be alive. However, I found that to emerge from a personal nightmare was to enter an infinitely more pervasive public nightmare - the nightmare of American hyst…

'The World Social Forum: From Defense to Offense" - by Immanuel Wallerstein

The World Social Forum (WSF) met in Nairobi, Kenya from January 20-25. The organization, founded as a sort of anti-Davos, has matured and evolved more than even its participants realize. From the beginning, the WSF has been a meeting of a wide range of organizations and movements from around the world who defined themselves as opposed to neo-liberal globalization and imperialism in all its forms. Its slogan has been "another world is possible" and its structure has been that of an open space without officers, spokespeople, or resolutions. The WSF has been against neo-liberal globalization and the term alterglobalists has been coined to define the stance of its proponents - another kind of global structure. In the first several WSF meetings, beginning in 2001, the emphasis was defensive. Participants, each time more numerous, denounced the defects of the Washington Consensus, the efforts of th…

I said, “Are we still going to war with Iraq?” And he said, “Oh, it’s worse than that.” He reached over on his desk. He picked up a piece of paper. And he said, “I just got this down from upstairs” -- meaning the Secretary of Defense’s office -- “today.” And he said, “This is a memo that describes how we’re going to take out seven countries in five years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.” I said, “Is it classified?” He said, “Yes, sir.” I said, “Well, don’t show it to me.” And I saw him a year or so ago, and I said, “You remember that?” He said, “Sir,…

Net zoals de rampzalige bezetting van Irak al lang was voorbereid door de Amerikaanse neoconservatieven, geldt dat ook voor een aanval op Iran. Dat is de grotere context die de Volkskrant niet geeft. Uitspraak in Lockerbie showproces
31 jan 01

De Independent bericht over de gevangen neming van Britse marinemensen door Iran: 'The Al-Alam television station also displayed a letter that Leading Seaman Turney had written to her family in England. In it she said: "We were out in the boats when we were arrested by Iranian forces as we had apparently gone into Iranian waters. I wish we hadn't because then I would be home with you all right now ... I want you all to know that I am well and safe."
The Ministry of Defence in London stressed that what Leading Seaman Turney had said should be judged in the context of the pressures she had been subjected to while in captivity.' Klimaatverandering 103

'“Out of Balance: ExxonMobil’s Impact on Climate Change“ shows the influence that the largest company in the world has on governments, the media and citizens and what can be done about global warming. While the Earth’s climate is pushed further out of balance by increasing use of fossil fuels, ExxonMobil continues to assert undue influence around the world— making record profits while ignoring climate science for which there has been overwhelming consenus for over ten years.
“Out of Balance” does not just critique ExxonMobil, it also offers challenging, large-scale ideas for the global social changes that must take place if there’s any chance of having a livable planet for future generations.

'More Rich Urbanites Bring Pretension to Living Simply.

In today's New York Times (where else?) there's yet another story about super-rich urbanites sacrificing delivered meals and cab rides in the name of environmentalism. Meet the Beavens: Colin, 43, a writer of historical nonfiction; Michelle, 39, a writer at BusinessWeek; and Isabella, 2, who live together in their Eames-furnished, "elegant prewar on Lower Fifth Avenue" that Michelle bought in 1999.
The Beavens are doing their darndest to live an entire year with No Impact, meaning no waste. They will only eat organic food grown within 250 miles of Manhattan, will make no trash except compost, will use no paper (including toilet), and have unplugged all their household appliances. However, Michelle will continue using her Kiehl's and Fresh moisturizer, laundry will be done by machine, and the cleaning lady (thank you Jesus!) gets to keep using the vacuum.
It's admirable that the Beav…

'Time Caught in Act of Dumbing Down the News for US Readers.

Blogger Paul Schmelzer has been busy raising questions about some of the nation's widely read periodicals when it comes to the selection of their cover stories—namely the difference between Time's April 2 U.S. and International editions. While the international cover features a story about Pakistani religious extremists filtering across the border of Afghanistan "with the intention of imposing their strict interpretation of Islam on a population unable to fight back," the US edition of the publication features the story, "The Case for Teaching the Bible." Schmelzer wonders why Time isn't giving the U.S. the same edition that the rest of the world is seeing on newsstands. The choice can't only be about marketing and keeping newsstand sales up in the U.S. Something's a little fishy here.
This isn't the first time that a major US news weekly has pulled this trick of presenting the n…

'Rumsfeld torture suit dismissed.
A US court has dismissed a lawsuit against former US defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld over claims prisoners were tortured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The court accepted that the nine men who sued had been tortured - and detailed the torture in its ruling.
But Judge Thomas Hogan ruled the five Iraqis and four Afghans did not have US constitutional rights, and also that Mr Rumsfeld was immune from such suits.
Two human rights groups brought the suit against him and three officers.
Judge Hogan threw out the claims against retired Lt Gen Ricardo Sanchez, the former commander of US military forces in Iraq, Col Thomas Pappas and former Brig Gen Janis Karpinski, both former commanders at Abu Ghraib prison.
In a ruling stretching to nearly 60 pages, the chief judge of the US district court for the District of Columbia said the allegations of torture were "horrifying".

'U.S. Navy flexes muscles in Persian Gulf
By JAMES CALDERWOOD and JIM KRANE
Associated Press Writers
The Associated Press

ABOARD THE USS JOHN C. STENNIS — American warplanes screamed off two aircraft carriers Tuesday as the U.S. Navy staged its largest show of force in the Persian Gulf since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, launching a mammoth exercise meant as a message to the Iranians.
The maneuvers with 15 warships and more than 100 aircraft were sure to heighten tensions with Iran, which has frequently condemned the U.S. military presence off its coast and is in a faceoff with the West over its nuclear program and its capture of a British naval team.
While they would not say when the war games were planned, U.S. commanders insisted the exercises were not a direct response to Friday's seizure of the 15 British sailors and marines, but they also made clear that the flexing of the Navy's military might was intended as a warning.
"If there is strong presence, then it sends a clear…

Milan Kundera

In The Curtain stelt Milan Kundera zichzelf en ons de vraag: 'And If the Tragic Has Deserted Us?' Hij geeft het volgende voorbeeld: 'Antigone inspired Hegel to his magisterial meditation on tragedy: two antagonists face to face, each of them inseperably bound to a truth that is partial, relative, but considered in itself, entirely justified. Each is prepared to sacrifice his life for it, but can only make it prevail at the price of total ruin for the adversary. Thus both are at once right and guilty... Freeing the great human conflicts from naive interpretation as a struggle between good and evil, understanding them in the ligt of tragedy, was an enormous feat of mind; it brought forward the unavoidable relativism of human truths; it made clear the need to do justice to the enemy. But moral Manichaeanism has an indestructable vitality... Hitler not only brought unspeakable horror upon Europe but also stripped it of its sense of the tragic. Like the struggle against Nazism, …

Kale Knikkers

Verliest de westerse man …

'Iraq's Environmental Nightmare Drags On
by Stephen Leahy

Four years after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and despite 22 billion dollars spent on recovery and reconstruction, Iraq's environment remains in disastrous shape. "The Tigris and Euphrates rivers are essentially open sewers," Azzam Alwash, head of Nature Iraq, a conservation group based in Baghdad, told Tierramérica. Industrial waste, hospital waste, fertilizer run-off from farming, as well as oil spills plague the two rivers that define the Mesopotamia region and which provide much of the irrigation and drinking water. "We inherited a terrible situation when it comes to the environment," Narmin Othman, Iraq's environment minister, said in a Tierramérica interview. The natural environment of Iraq has been devastated by three wars since 1980, and decades of neglect and mismanagement under the Saddam Hussein regime (1979-2003). "The environmental laws were laughable under Saddam. State-owne…

'Nothing but Fascists
Ali Al-Sarraf,
Middle East Online

Never in modern history has country been forced to pay for its death,
torture, and destruction with its own money - its own oil revenues.
Iraq has become a country where thieves are entrusted with its
richness and where murderous gangs are entrusted with its security,
says Ali Al-Sarraf.

The war on Iraq was not carried out on the basis of mere strategic
interests. No strategies or interests could explain the level of
death and destruction that Iraq had undergone ever since the Gulf War
in 1991. If one were to assume that the US led invasion in 2003 is a
continuation of that war, then Iraq could be said to have suffered
more horrors than any country had, including the countries that were
involved the WWII.

We are talking about at least two and a half million Iraqi civilians
who had met their fate, where 750,000 of them were killed during the
last four years. That figure represents 10% of Iraq’s population. In
